Shame about the tram windows being dirty but it sounds like a fun day! Sounds like Cleethorpes is good for something then (pubs)! I see you got a 'Southern gatwick express' 387 there. Is the interior any different to the Thameslink ones?

It's red inside, vice the green-ish seats on 387/1s, and red outside, but otherwise no difference noted. Extremely different compared to the fugly 442s, although nothing will be better EMU wise for GatEx than the 460s were. I never got to sample the 73s on GatEx (came close, but it was only a Hot Spare :( ) so can't comment on those.

387202 and 387203 were also supposedly out on Thameslink yesterday, but I couldn't get a confirmed ID of either so not counted them.

I expect Day 3's trip report to go live tonight, and while some of you know what I'm up to today the rest of you will soon find out! On which note, today's trip report should be more interesting a read, not to mention longer. Finally for now, those of you following the Live Trip Report on Twitter, I hope you're enjoying the updates :)

Excellent stuff so far, although I must admit a HST tour is not for me :)

Having done 3 specials on HSTs now (Westbury to Minehead charity special in 2008, then a 125 Group Leicester to Scarborough special in 2008 I think, now this one), I'm inclined to agree.

As I mentioned to Ark yesterday, I'd have preferred a pair of 47s. A lot I would have preferred, but I draw the line at Peaks

I would have been on it from at least Market Harborough if it was a pair of brush! I agree - tram tours just don't do it for me.

It was great having your company again Tech :)

I wasn't expecting a pair of 170s to tip up at Grimsby that's for sure

I'll properly read the replies in the morning, in the meantime here is Day 2:

07/05/2016 - Tech's Over Doing It, Day 2

Waking at 0530 to a headache and very tired eyes was not fun! A de-rance sure helped, and just after 0600 we head out for the day. Breakfast is sourced from Upper Crust and goes down well, but disappointed at the lack of option to heat the sausage baguette. A good start to the day though with double winners 387113+387111 to St Pancras, 387113 was a score for sight too. A meal deal is sourced from Boots at Kings Cross, then we make our way up to join 43050+43059 on UKRailtours' The Midland & Great Central excursion. Me and Kite are in separate coaches on a fully loaded tour, and the HST East Midlands Trains provided is fine inside but caked in grime on the outside, a disgraceful show and a very poor advert for them. Not giving passengers a view out of the window that's clear, on an excursion, is just not good passenger service.

After a while I get bored, so bang on some tunes and finish Day 1's trip report. That got posted during the long wait at Birmingham Curve Junction. Thank Goodness that boring route is now covered, save for the curve at the top end towards Birmingham, not keen to do that line again for a long time though! Toton gets me 66750 for sight, still 19 GBRf ones to see and 20 overall [66953, one day you will be mine! - Ed] and it's so stuffy on this HST. Coffee number 3 of the day is sourced by Kirkby in Ashfield, and I see 42328 is a score so I've got something out of this HST. By Shireoaks I know what's coming after Brancliffe Junction, that is a long boring 15 mile endurance fest to St Catherine's Junction, so I bang the tunes on. Only 2 hours 15 minutes to go until Cleethorpes...Kite comes and joins me at this point to natter, so tunes off. The time does pass better at this point.

Eventually we arrive 2 minutes late at 1402, then we have to wait several minutes for a shunt forward for some reason. We meet forum member HMS Ark Royal and after a short natter we see Kite off while he goes unit bashing, Ark and I went to winner Spoons The Collieseum Picture Theatre. No winner brews on to my surprise, and we go upstairs to the roof garden. Not many Spoons I've been to that have one of those! Kite rejoins us briefly, Ark and I go to Sainsburys for a supply raid. I get 3 bottles of beer I haven't had before for the way back, then go to a chippy for a hellfire meal, where I get a jumbo sausage and chips with gravy for £4. After this, Ark and I go to the pub on the station and grab a swift half of Cottage Brewery's Duchess. A score and a brilliant beer, highly recommended. 288 brews now logged so far!

Kite now rejoins us having had 170308+170303, which I believe one of those was his last 170/3. We part ways with Ark, great to finally meet you, next time you can get me a pint in ;) 43059+43050 leave on time at 1620, and we leave the area far quicker than we did coming in! Now, where's that bottle opener...Three bottles later, I'm now on 291 brews logged on Untappd, and I score 73962 and 73963 for sight on a test train at Loughborough! The journey goes quite quick, also scoring goods line around the back of Leicester, until Luton Airport Parkway where we crawl along the slows for ages, before transferring to the Up Fast just before Hendon, and we wait for ages for a path into St Pancras.

Arrival is bang on time at 2135, and we jog down to the low level plaforms. 319428 is dud for both of us so it's flagged, with double winners 387201+387120 taken on an infamous Thameslink Stagger to East Croydon. A visit to McDonalds is had, where I redeem one of my last WHSmith vouchers, then we make our way back to base camp. The phone is shoved on charge asap, as it got down to 5% left. That was with it being off for 2 hours or so during the tour as well!

The required track, that being Knighton Junction to Burton-on-Trent and St Catherine's Junction to Kirk Sandall Junction, done was certainly welcome, and a good day overall. An 0630 alarm is set, ready for Day 3!

A great read, Tech... It was a pleasure to meet you and Kite - if if Kite blew away most of the time! :D The shunt forwards was, if you recall, due to the fact the driver pulled up waaaaaaaaaaay to shot and had left the rear coach and the power car - meaning he had to restart the engine and move forward and almost kiss the buffer stop to get the train in - even then, the rear power car overhung...

The little pub on the station was called Pub under the Clock. We left the chippy next to/inside the station and, after eating what we'd got, looked at the time. Spotting the pub was open and, being the veteran drinkers we are, the pair of us saw we had ten minutes in which to walk in and get a swift half in - we were less than four minutes!

For those that are wondering, the ceremony performed in the beer section of Sainsbury's was swearing in Tech as an honorary Northerner and that he swore a sacred oath to protect and defend the honour and integrity of all classes that make up the pacer family.

Side Note: After watching Tech and Kite off, I got a ticket for New Clee - just to cross it off the list and give me something to do while waiting for the bsu home to Hull. Surprised the man at Cleethorpes's booking office who had not sold a ticket to there in six months. As it was a request stop, I had to tell the guard...

Anyway, Tech, glad you enjoyed your time meeting me - I know I enjoyed that beer you got me!

Great reads Tech, I'm beginning to get withdrawal symptoms and reading your reports is putting a fire into my belly to get out there again.

I love the variety you are getting and what was EMT doing with their tram!!!

Also I NEED to visit Cleethorpes! Pub and chippy on the station!? That's heaven, maybe a visit later this year in July on one of the days I do my FONE.

Can't wait for your day 3 report and your reasoning why Ryanair was a better flight than your NY trip.

Happy hunting.

Ark, you can always get me a pint in next time I come up ;) That swift half really was swift, into the pub and back out again in just 4 minutes was excellent!

Andy, your wish is my command, here is Day 3 below. I am already jealous of your FoNE already, let alone your trip on American Airlines. Required airline, required crafts, an airline with a good reputation, oh I wish I was on your flights!

08/05/2016 - Tech's Over Doing It, Day 3

Cracking sleep had, so much so I was awake at 0533! Eventually I accept the PNB request, about 30 minutes later, then decide to get on with starting this trip report. This was the day I was going home on originally, but following a major TPP Mode session on Star Wars Day, I'm off to Edinburgh today! After a good de-rance, Kite and I leave base camp, another good stay at easyHotel for me and I look forward to returning to this one!

Double duds 377121+377442 take us to London Victoria, and I see Kite off here as he goes on winner for him 466040. Meanwhile I make my way to Victoria Coach Station, and 30p got me a most needed PNB. Eventually it's time to join winner National Express coach BK14 LFT on the 0830 to Stansted Airport. I get on first so grab a seat at the front and I have a power socket, very nice. We finally leave at 0834, 4 minutes late as we had to wait for 4 other National Express coaches to clear the way, not to mention empty coaches leaving the arrivals area. For £6.45, approximately one-third of the single fare GA wanted [£19 one way, ouch! - Ed] from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport, I'm pleased with this move. It's a slow trek through the city, taking 30 minutes just to get to Tower of London, but it's a lovely day and I've got Tech's Mobile Disco going with various Nightcore tunes on.

I see some 03-reg Tridents [I hear you non-bus people falling asleep there! - Ed] on Stagecoach London's route 115, which I didn't think I'd see these days. I miss the days of Tridents here there and everywhere in London! At 0930, we're onto the M11, and I'm realising I should have had food and coffee by now, as my stomach is less than pleased with me! Arrival is 14 minutes early at 0956, and I go to get my Central Scotland rover, ready for later. The poor guy has never issued a rover before, but the other guy in the ticket office puts him in the right place on the system. He was pleased to learn how to issue a rover, and I head upstairs for my usual choice of meal from Burger King, at £8.09 it's not cheap but much better than the other options. I go outside to enjoy the glorious heat and sunshine [I later found out it was horrid weather at home! - Ed] before heading to security.

In just 9 minutes I'm through, would have been 6 but I left my phone in my pocket, so needed the patdown. 9 minutes is still only 1 minute slower than my best BHX security time, so 9 minutes for an enormous airport like Stansted is incredible! In November 2014, the new post-security area was still being done, so it's a lot better now. I spot several planes here, all winners for sight too! I add another tune to Tech's Mobile Disco today, the Nightcore mix of Cascada's Bad Boy. The fester at Stansted was sure made shorter as a result! A Pret coffee is also enjoyed [sadly no free coffee offer unlike at Gatwick! - Ed] and a bottle of water sourced for the journey. Gate 84 is mine today, only the second time I've been on this side and it's a winner departure gate [I blame andyb2706 in the Twitter chatter group for giving me the idea of keeping track of the gates! - Ed] too. I take a perch by the window, while the majority stand in the queue. With allocated seating, why stand in the queue?

Winner for everything EI-ESL is on the 1230 London Stansted to Edinburgh today, and I casually go to the checks at the gate and join my aisle seat [I did expect to be given a middle seat, given I let Ryanair's systems allocate me a seat! - Ed], and have I yet mentioned that I love having the app on my phone, no need to print a piece of paper for my boarding pass any more on Ryanair. I'm sure I've hinted to it in the past, but I love flying Ryanair. Compared to Norwegian, their crews are superstars and the fleet is entirely Boeing 737-800s [yes, you lot at the back, I know I'm boring you, I will get to the trains soon! - Ed] which is great for me, as I love these planes. This is all partly why I chose to fly up to Edinburgh, I'm slowly becoming an aviation geek!

Quite, when I was at Stansted, I noticed Ryanair serve 128 destinations from here. Vasteras Knock Ireland West (admittedly not done from Stansted) and Edinburgh done, 125 to go! Anyway, enough Ryanair frothing from me, I'm now on 15 craft scored with them, and as always I'm already looking forward to my next flight before we've even taken off! Maybe I should put trains to the side and focus on being an AV geek! Into the air at 1240 and back down at 1326, not bad at all, and the flight was very smooth. Much better than that on a MK4 up the ECML...And that new trumpet sound is funky! 20 minutes early at the terminal, and the first tram to town is dud 268, so I sit back and await the next one. £5.50 is a lot of ching, I can see why not a lot of people use it!

Winner 267 finally leaves, 15 more FADs [Fresh Air Device - Ed] although I'm surprised we left the airport with about 16 or 18 people on board! About 40 on from Gyle Centre but still a fair few alighted at Edinburgh Park Station too. Dud 158728 and 4 334s turned down due to dudness, and 170402 was noted flying through, as I need that one the chase is on! Super Duds 158870+158871 take me to Haymarket, and I source a cold bottle of pop for me and another for Blindtraveller, before then joining dud 334004 with winner 334012 for an infamous 'Haymarket leap' to Waverley. Will I make it onto the working of choice from Waverley? Nope, we arrived at 1505, the same time as BT's train was leaving! I scramble over and join dud 170431 to Haymarket to meet up with him there, as he bailed there for me.

After a quick catch up, time flew by and before we knew it, dud 158726 and winner 158724 were in to take us to Stirling. Why Stirling? It was the most convenient place to join a ScotRail train to Glasgow Central, and as the diverts to Central cover a better bit of rare track, from Coatbridge Junction to Langloan Junction, it was a priority. That section of track doesn't normally see passenger trains on it, and we join dud 170430 to Glasgow. We pick up the relevant crew member at Cumbernauld, and to be fair the stagger was not half as dull as I expected it to be. OK, it did help we were heavily engaged in train and plane chatter! We arrive 4 up into Central much to my surprise, and after grabbing a quick photo of 170430 and 170408, we head into Boots as I need to get an anti-perspriant. Some cold drinks are also needed of course, it's been a hot day!

Down to the low level lines, which suits me well as winner 320319 and dud 320303 take us to Partick. We have a modest wait for double duds 334033+334020 to Glasgow Queen Street Low Level. A short wait gets us onto dud 170459 and winner 170407 for a trip to Croy via Springburn, on another of the Queen Street diverts. There were no diverts via Anniesland heading west out of Glasgow that we could find on RTT, hence going on this one. I think half of Glasgow will have heard me celebrating getting a winner Barbie 170! We did plan originally to take this pair to Falkirk High for a +7 back onto a service going via Anniesland, as the plus at Croy was something around +28.

Fortunately we bail from the droning 170s here at Croy, as someone activated the emergency aid system in 170407, which meant a delay getting the doors open, meaning the pair left 4 down. That would have been uncomfortable for sure at Falkirk High, so we were sensible to bail! I'm glad we didn't risk missing it, as dud 170455 was with winner 170429! 13 170s left to get now, 3 of which are supposed to be getting converted to 171s and 3 are in Anglia, so just 7 more ScotRail ones to go! We go via Anniesland as booked, covering the little link line there, and arrive 6 up. We also decide not to faff around and take the same pair of 170s back to Edinburgh, as it's been a long day and we're both wanting to get in now. BT wishes to drown out the noise of the 170, as do I, so he gets into finishing an e-book while I shove Tech's Mobile Disco on and get the books and trip report back up to date.

This takes until Linlithgow to do, which certainly helped kill the dull journey off! Polmont to almost Linlithgow is wired up I see now, and most of the posts etc are up west of there, it really won't be all that long until the 170s will become redundant on the Edinburgh to Glasgow services. Bring on the new order I say! A good meal from BK had for tea, then we get Lothian's 859 on route 37 to head in for the night.

A top day indeed, and a lazy start to the day awaits! 5 winner Scottish units and some rare track done, not to mention the fun on the way, could not complain at Day 3 at all!

Day 4 will be starting in a bit, a lazy morning had!

I'm enjoying these reports Tech. HST to Cleethorpes sounds like something I need to do, do EMT still do these in the summer?

I can't share your love of ryanair I'm afraid, I have to use them on at least one return journey a year and I find them pretty poor. I have to take headphones to drown out the constant tannoy adverts and I don't rate the service. Stansted is pretty efficient at getting you on your plane, the main issues are coming back through customs on the return leg. I'm quite fond of planes too and you've got me investigating cheap domestic flights for bashing purposes.

Sounds like you had fun in the Central Belt though, with some track and unit scoreage :)

Great reports Tech, three thoroughly enjoyable reads. The weather was certainly on your side!

I was up in Glasgow myself over the weekend, but I didn't go on very many trains this time. Now I've cleared the 314s, I think I'll focus on getting some more winner diesel units next time I'm up there, seeing as I still need 32 156s, 42 158s and 51 170s for haulage!

I have now noticed replies, I'll read them later. In the meantime, here is Day 4:

09/05/2016 - Tech's Over Doing It, Day 4

First of all, I hope you all found Day 3 a more interesting read than Day 2, I haven't checked the forum for responses yet as I type this aboard my final ScotRail train of the trip. Apologies for a lack of tweets during much of Day 4, it was a social day rather than a manic all-out bash!

0738 and I wake up after an excellent sleep, and a very relaxed social morning is had with BT and his wife. The bacon and sausage sandwiches she made for breakfast were stunning, and more than appreciated too! It's not until just before lunchtime before we head out, with zero plans whatsoever, and Lothian's 865 takes us to Foot of Leith Walk on route 16. We have a rather long TPP Mode session, revolving around Tridents and D stocks to be bashed in London before they go. Which meant that the journey was over before we knew it, and Lothian's route 22 turfed out 337 to take us to Waverley Steps. We join Super Dud [only at least the 4th time I've had this one... - Ed] 158702 to winner shack Newtongrange, and dud 158731 joins the ScotRail Super Dud Club for a hop to winner shack Shawfair.

The tight plus didn't exist, as the next Tweedbank was cancelled due to a problem with the train, so a long 31 minutes before Super Dud 158740 takes us one stop to winner shack Eskbank. That clears the Borders Railway shacks, and we kill the 20 minutes here with more nattering, a quick bit of time on Twitter and collecting some tickets for BT's forthcoming London bash. I'm looking forward to his trip report for that! Super Dud 158702 takes us back to Edinburgh, and we get a Nescafe Alegeria coffee each at WHSmith before joining joining double duds 334020+334033 for some 334 thrash to Bathgate. 334020 now joins the exclusive ScotRail Super Duds Club, and the thrash was more than welcome! Double duds 334034+334039 take us to Haymarket, although sadly no winners turn up before we join dud 170474 to Waverley.

A quick visit to Boots is needed before we meet up with Mrs BT, then we all head to platform 19 for today's first winner, a noisy 68007 for a trip to Inverkeithing. The thrash is much enjoyed, and we alight to get Super Dud 158867 back to Edinburgh. A visit to Sainsburys for a supply raid is had, ready for later, then we head back to base on Lothian's 760. Getting bits and bobs done, along with more socialising, we then do a taxi to the nearby Toby Carvery. The taxi driver has no idea where he's going, but eventually gets us there. An amazing meal is had, and I'm glad the hot chocolate with brandy was recommended as it was stunning! After settling up, we get a better taxi driver to take us back to base, where I grab my stuff and after a PNB, I say my farewells and thanks, then join Lothian's 754 to town.

I just make it onto a pair of 170s, the back one being dud 170428. Something told me this was one to jump on and check the front one at Haymarket. Good thing I did, as it was winner 170402, 12 more 170s to go! 158868 joins the Super Duds Club on the trip to Inverkeithing, ready for the Cally Insomnie to Crewe. I could have scored 170411 if I'd waited for the Perth, which was irritating! So that was Day 5, as the sleeper leaves Inverkeithing at 0012 I'll go into that in Day 5. The trip is nearly over, and I have work when I get back to Hereford. Oh won't that be fun...

I don't believe an HST had been to Cleethorpes for quite a few years until last weekend, EMT run summer extras to Scarborough but those are in the hands of 222s.

Ryanair isn't to everyone's tastes, admittedly, but they suit this budget traveller well. I had earphones in a lot on the flight, I must admit, as I had Tech's Mobile Disco going on. That was more because I had some thumping tunes recently added and had them in my head!

If I've encouraged a fellow basher to use cheap domestic flights for bashing purposes then that's not a bad thing in my book!

ooooh nice few reads there Mr. Quest! Hope the SREMUG™ is nice to you at some point over the next couple of days.

It was and it wasn't, required 334s would turn up but in the wrong direction most of the time! Glad you enjoyed the reads so far, more to come yet

Oh wasn't it just, some lovely weather had and a stark contrast to my last visit to Scotland when Storm Gertrude was coming in!

Good call on getting your DMUs in, might as well do the rare track involved on the diverts using Central too, as it involves the track from Langloan Junction to Coatbridge Junction, not a line normally used by passenger trains! Don't forget the 318s and 320s, let alone the 334s and 380s up there mind ;)

Day 5 is currently in progress, sitting in Pumpkin at Crewe waking up with Tech's Fuel of Champions. The final train of the trip is coming up, and I've got work later too. Much coffee will be had today, that's for sure...

Here we go all, the final instalment of the trip report. I'm off to work after a breakfast and coffee, I do reckon I'll be tired by the end of the day of course!

10/05/2016 - Tech's Over Doing It, Day 5

And so it begins, the final day of the 5 day marathon! It starts well too, with winner for everything 73968 and I even score seated sleeper coach 9810 as well! Obviously I'm on the Cally Insomnie [if you don't already know, it's my nickname for the Caledonian Sleeper - Ed] and I am right at the back, so no early morning Super ED thrash for me sadly. It obviously saddens me to leave Scotland behind, but I have a hunch I'll be back before the end of the year. Hope so at least! We arrive at 0031 into Waverley, and of course I have a look at what loco we will have forward. Thankfully, as hoped, the 90 we saw yesterday floating around here is my 90 forward, as it's winner 90042 and has been attached to my coach, excellent! As we're the first portion to arrive, we sit here for absolutely ages, and we get more seated sleeper passengers join us once another portion arrives. Quite why they're with us I have no idea, as there's no pick-up in Edinburgh for this run.

I move to a pair of single seats thankfully taken and get comfortable, after which it's not long until I get to sleep. Just as well, as it's not far off 0200 by then! I wake briefly for the arrival at Carlisle, then rudely awakened by a very rough departure from Preston at 0436. My alarm goes off at 0500, to allow me time to wake up and prepare for a bail at Crewe. We arrive 9 minutes early at 0529, and after a quick photo it's time for a PNB and a large cup of Tech's Fuel of Champions [coffee, as you will remember from Day 1! - Ed] while making observations for the Trains you've seen working thread. The last train of the trip falls to 175006 on the 0630 Manchester Piccadilly to Milford Haven. It is a great shame to end the trip, but all good things must come to an end I suppose! I also note the 0722 Crewe to Bolton, as that had 142007 and 150138 on it, a move that needs imprinting into memory as it could be fun.

68001 is scored for sight, couldn't quite tell if 68017 was definitely on depot so didn't tick it off, just in case. It's time for Tech's Mobile Disco and some more Irn Bru [I must remember I owe BT for that... - Ed] before a change of clothes and a bit of a freshen up. This trip has been an incredibly welcome de-stress after recent events outside the hobby, so my thanks to the following people, in alphabetical order, for their part in making it a trip to remember:

Blindtraveller, Hassaanhc, Kite159, Kristofferson and Mrs BT

I hope those who followed the Live Trip Report on Twitter [from what I can gather, that's quite a few people now - Ed] enjoyed the updates. I'm certainly open to hearing whether there's too many or not enough tweets, whether the level of detail is too much or too little and so on. I'm also considering finding one hashtag I like and using it for all Live Trip Reports from now on. That much I would certainly like views on!

The first rain I've seen in days is noted in Shrewsbury, what happened to the stunning weather I had in Scotland?! I arrive into Hereford at 0841, and I see a signal has been installed at the north end of Hereford's platform 1. Interesting, as until now any moves that way have been unsignalled during engineering works. I need to look into that! While you'll have noticed I've done my usual daily stats on this trip report [going old school and leaving them out, although there's also the point they've not been calculated! - Ed] but here are the Scores on the Doors for this trip:

50 winners
1 new plane
4 shack scores
1 new coach
No doubt several Lothian buses
26 new rail sights
13 new aviation sights

Not a bad result whatsoever in anyone's book! The update for Red Pen 2016 will be up soon, but I believe that puts me on 305 rail scores for 2016 so far, just over halfway to my target of 603 before the end of the year. Can I get 298 more scores in in that time? Only time will tell, but game on!

Final note, the Borders Railway were done on the rover, and it was accepted no problem by the guards on the trains! Does this mean validity has been extended, logically and at last?

Oh wasn't it just, some lovely weather had and a stark contrast to my last visit to Scotland when Storm Gertrude was coming in!

Good call on getting your DMUs in, might as well do the rare track involved on the diverts using Central too, as it involves the track from Langloan Junction to Coatbridge Junction, not a line normally used by passenger trains! Don't forget the 318s and 320s, let alone the 334s and 380s up there mind ;)

I couldn't believe how nice it was all weekend, I'm really pleased I decided to go with the concert tickets option for Mrs 021's birthday present, otherwise I'd have missed the lovely weather!

I did manage to get two winner 158s after Mrs 021 and I decided to go to Edinburgh for the day on the Saturday, and I managed to get two winner Northern diesel units after deciding to head home from Manchester Airport via Oxford Road rather than the usual Piccadilly for a change. Out of the ScotRail EMUs, I still need 16 318s, 18 320s, 39 334s and 32 380s for haulage.

Great Day 4 and 5 reports too.

Glad you enjoyed the reads, sounds like you had a good time up there. Plenty to get though! Coming home to heavy rain yesterday was a shock to the system!

Tech, that was yet another fab read and you managed to get around quite a bit. The loco thrash in Scotland must have been the highlight of the trip rapidly followed by a huge bump back to earth when you had to re-engage with normaldom and get back to work. Hopefully not too long before you're back out on the rails again.

A great read tech, very productive indeed sir, plenty winners all round too.
Just to offer my opinion on an HST Railtour, hmm probably not for me either but would say, never say never. As for your train being manky outside, shame on EMT, I bet they'll have earned a fair bit wedge to hire the train out too.

Have to say aviation isn't my thing spotting wise but certainly a good move to get up to Scotland, when Tech told me he was flying from Stanstead to Edinburgh, I told Tech, flying will kill your arms mind:lol:, he didn't get it at first, then I had visions of him, bag strapped to his back, radio headpiece on standing on the runway, arms flapping and the control tower saying, techniquest 2 zero zero 3, your now clear for take off, now f"$*!ng scarper lad IF wanna your gonna hit V2!!!!

Glad you managed to get some cat scratching done, I love doing the fife circle cats and if not before, I'll definitely up there, doing it in September. A very cunning move, getting the Sleeper from Inverkeithing, its certainly got the wheels turning for another trip planned for October and to rake in 73968 too, nevermind a winner in 90042, well done mate.

Top trip there you had Tech and more importantly a much needed break from work, gave you time to get your head back together.

Glad you enjoyed the read, aye I did have quite some variety!

The fall back to Earth was not fun, returning to reality was grim. My return to the rails is not due to be for a few weeks, unless the magic plastic sees use. Expect me to be on the forum more than usual for most of May!

47403: Oh gosh yes, just what the doctor ordered and my head certainly got back into the game. How I'll cope over the next few weeks, as it's not likely to be until 30th May until my next trip. It won't be overly exotic either, but we'll see what happens.

The move south was exhausting, I think if I'd on all the way to Euston I'd have had a reasonable sleep and it would have been OK.

Cat bashing is insanely good fun, I'm looking forward to more as soon as possible. Glad you enjoyed the read!

Tech, just caught up! I'm glad I could join you briefly on this trip, sounds like it did you a world of good [as switching from road to rail on the commute has done for me!]

Of course I enjoyed the read, and you've inspired me to fly to Scotland as part of a West Highland Line trip I'm planning with the other half :)

I somehow doubt you'll be flying from Stansted mind, depending where you fly to. When it comes to the time to book flights, get on Skyscanner and you'll be able to look up flights much more easily than it used to be (ie, going through each airline's website manually). Of course, I'll be happy to advise as much as possible too :)

Adult beverages, good mates, a good social and plenty of trains, buses, coaches and planes, just what the doctor prescribed. Far more interesting than my usual Friday and Saturday after-work socials, joining one of my now-former colleagues in Spoons for a pint or two before getting the bus home!

Welcome to the frequent rail travellers' club by the way!

An excellent few days, plenty of variety as well.
If somebody had said a few years ago that 73s would have passenger turns in Scotland they would have been sectioned!

Crikey I forgot to post this trip report for a while, got proper into a discussion on Twitter!

23/05/2016 - Tech's Stamping

Well, as I started typing this on the work-bound commute on 19th May, I had no idea where I was going to go, just that I was going on a bash! As I was down to work on Bank Holiday Frothday, with my next opportunity to escape reality not available until 5th or 6th June, the decision was taken to get onto the rails again. I've also got a tight-fisted month ahead in June, so there will be no proper bashing until July now. That feels like an eternity away, meaning an escape from the realms of mundanity [it's now an official word! - Ed] and all that's going on was bumped up to the top of the priority list! Well, strictly speaking, other tasks on 22nd May were top of the priority list, but let's not go there...

So what's the trip title about this time? It's a musical reference again, and you'll not be shocked to discover it's another Nightcore tune! This time it's Stamp On The Ground, and I am more than aware none of these tunes are the cup of tea for most readers of these trip reports. More importantly, you all want to know where I went to, so read on and find out, I only found out on the day itself!

Options ranged quite significantly, including but certainly not limited to GWR 150 chasing, shack scratching on the Heart of Wales, a WMDR and getting my last shacks on the Worcester to Oxford line. Even on 21st May I hadn't decided where I was going, as some of the options had to await a weather forecast. An epic TPP Mode spree was by then in full swing, but for a trip in June. Full details will become available soon enough...After a lift in, and the gen not revealing much of use after all, I ended up with a lightbulb moment and paid the epic ching of £39.10 for an Off Peak Return to Hartford. Thanks to ATW recently banning Off Peak Day Returns before 0930, all my options were significantly more expensive than before, this run would have cost me £32.70 on a day return. I was not waiting until the 0954 to save money, as said saving would have been spent on other stuff to kill time!

175009 rolls in to take me to Crewe, and I easily find a seat [the cynic in me says that's probably due to the new ticket restrictions putting people off using this train! - Ed], and I love the legroom airline seats on 175s provide. Much better than what you get at a table seat, which I'm now actively avoiding on 175s if flying solo! Tech's Mobile Disco is on now for the 83 miles and 69 chains to Crewe. Glad I had a sausage butty and coffee from Pumpkin though, I doubt I'd have made it to Crewe with a raging stomach otherwise! Reading Keith Jarrett's reply to my post on his trip report thread reminded me that I never did check which Starships I need for 10 miles, so I get busy doing that. I had plenty of time last night, but plain forgot to do it! Just as well I checked my RM logs, as I found an entry from August 2006 [yes, really, it's taken this long to realise the error! - Ed] of a Starship being incorrectly logged as 323321! That was to be fixed, but RM won't let me save the change. Probably just as well, as I can't be sure if that was supposed to be 323221 or 231!

Turns out I need 8 LM Starships and 4 Northern Starships for 10 miles, most of those won't take too long to get there at least. We slam to a halt shortly before Nantwich's level crossing, then grind to a halt again in the station itself. 5 minutes later, we start moving again thankfully. A supply raid at the nearby Tesco Express is done, and a Coffee House americano from the WHSmith upstairs for 99p before I join 350252 for the trip to the day's first winner shack, Hartford. This 350 is now a Super Dud too! It takes 18 minutes for me to walk from the northbound platform at Hartford to the Chester bound platform at Greenbank. Only problem now is there's no trains until 1220!

A meal deal sourced from the nearby Sainsburys Local, less than 5 minutes' walk from Greenbank station, and a bottle of cider too, and eventually I make the TVM accept my pressing of confirm. £8.10 for an Off Peak Day Return to Ashley, not cheap!

There's a +2 at Ashley, so it will be tight but hopefully makeable. The Chester is running rather late, and I didn't fancy a 30 minute fester at Mouldsworth. 142054 becomes the latest member successfully joining the League of Super Duds [one day I'll make up my mind if I prefer that or Super Dud Club! - Ed] for the trip to Ashley. Lunch is devoured on this journey, which was more than welcome. The cider will probably wait until the trip from Crewe to Hereford now. Almost met forum member andyb2706 but he got off at Plumley before I had a chance to say hello! The next train west is 11 down, but good news in that it was winner 150222! A good plus available at Lostock Gralam, to then head to Plumley, happy days!

A winner beer puts me on 301 brews logged now, the magical 300 hit on Saturday after work. The Golden Pheasant is a 2 minute walk from Plumley station, handy for a filler move! I sure appreciated the barmaid making up the difference for me to have a full pint, having used the rest of my change earlier. It's a nice pub, and while I enjoy my beer winner for sight 66742 heads east on a long train of Drax wagons! 150136 joins the Super Dud Club for the move back to Greenbank, the 4th new member today. I also note a possible 6th shack score for the day, which relies on LM running on time. Thanks to a fast 17 minute walk to Hartford station, I just make it in time to join the ever-so-slightly late 1436 to Birmingham, 350250 taking me to Crewe and two steps left to get it to Super Dud status. More than glad to sit down mind, as I walked fast to make it. I could now make it onto an earlier train home, will I do that I wonder...

After a PNB, the heat now got to me and I noted the next one home is express, calling only at Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Leominster before Hereford. None of this faffing around with the smaller stations, cold air-con and proper speed on a 175, yes please! I was glad I was sat down now mind, as we left bang on time. That is truely a rare event out of Crewe in my experience when heading home! I crack open the cider as we pass the DRS depot, which would have been much nicer cold but otherwise Aspall's Premier Cru cider is not bad. 302 brews now, 98 more to hit my target of 400 before the end of August. It could be done...Of course I have a bit of bookwork to do, and I easily get an airline seat on 175105 home. Being down to 20 percent charge in the phone was also a good reason to head home! On time out of Shrewsbury, well I never, it CAN be done after all!

Nightcore - Ravers in the UK sure goes well with some high speed 175 thrash down the Marches, I can't help noticing [much better than some of these tunes suit the stop-start run on this bus at least! - Ed]. The cider is empty just after Church Stretton, and I note I'll be well clear of 700 miles off 175105 by the time I get to Hereford. I forgot to mention my special thanks to Kite159 for helping pass the long fester at Greenbank earlier, our conversation and basher banter sure helped pass the time! I pop into my local Spoons for a cold pint of Magners Golden Draught, and yep I still prefer the bottled stuff. No new beers that I've not had, and I manage to find a socket to add a few percent of charge before I leave, if I make it home with any charge I'll be shocked. Most unusually for this bus, it's not packed to the rafters! Off home for a good meal after a productive day. Only one winner yes, but 5 shack scores in an area I wasn't expecting many winners in, so I'm chuffed. 299 winners and 169 shack scores for the year so far, will I hit the desired 604 winners for 2016 to beat 2015's target? Only one way to find out! I'm also after 200 or more shack scores this year, that should be easy enough. 1,608 mainline shacks now done, and still a megaton of Northern-served shacks to go, but a good bit of progress made. By the end of 2016, I expect my requirements across the country to have dropped massively! Will I manage it, considering I have no trips planned to go after shacks? Keep reading as the year goes on...

Sounds like a plesent days bashing, good scores too, not being aquainted with the service patern on the marches I assume not many are that fast? A list of those that are would be good.

Tech, this looks like another rewarding day out to the generally neglected Mid Cheshire line (so neglected that I still need a small bit of track!). Your continued enthusiasm puts most folk to shame! Pity that June looks like seeing you confined to barracks for most of the month - you'll be like a caged lion by the end of the month. 1608 mainline shacks is seriously impressive although I'd imagine young Kite is leaving you well behind. For comparison, I'm on 1,111 (plus 17 that have since closed) so I have a long way to catch the professionals!

I'll have to consult the ATW timetable, remind me later this week and I'll see what I can do.

Unfortunately not the last LM shack required, I need plenty on the Marston Vale and St Albans Abbey lines yet. However they're due fo be dealt with in the next couple of years...

I believe Kite's at least 220 shacks on the mainline ahead of me, but that's not surprising!

I was going to do the Chinnor gala in June, but the ching required is not good. I swear the Bluebell was a cheaper trip, yet it's significantly further away...

My NREA is rather empty compared to what you've done, it must be noted. I've filled a few pages with my 175, LM 170 and Starship mileages, some of the figures are less than I hoped. I need to fix my LM Starship 10-milers!

Another cracking read. Your June sounds like mine at the moment (hopefully it will change) so I think I know how you are going to feel!

Two bashers in the same boat it would appear, at least we'll both be jealous of Kite at the same time!

Hopefully June improves for both of us! I'll be in Devon on a family break towards the end of the month, if I'm lucky I might get to spend a few hours here and there on the rails. Plenty of shack scores to get, hopefully some of them will be had and that I also get the Seaton Tramway done at long last too!

Another brilliant read there! Hartford and Greenbank are two shacks that should be easy enough to get for me if I go from Chester or Piccadilly to Greenbank first to make sure it's a 150!

June is probably a month where I'll need to keep an eye on the bank balance. London on the first weekend, Inverness later on and probably lots of other stuff! Although I do have exams so that'll put a dampener on it...
