As I've already said, well done. As for Storms, I'm sure they've only started naming them this winter and its stupid as we have this many every year and they're making out that we don't!

Mega, mega congrats on getting 390114 even if you did cheat with gen ;). Shame about the mega shambles at Stechford and the fact that you missed 68009 on the 15:55 from Moor Street to Marylebone.

Congrats on clearing the 390s and the West Midlands of 2 more shacks, just that annoying Polesworth to do (which I would imagine will be a hotel in Nuneaton/Rugby on a Sunday night and a single to Polesworth, before a bus to Tamworth)

:)

Cracking day out there, many congratulations on that pesky 390 of course! Thanks for an entertaining read after a 14-and-a-bit hour day :)

If it's any consolation, the WCML South was still up the spout by the time I reached Euston this evening - 20 minute delays everywhere and Tring getting the short end of the LM stick as usual!

Kite: Yep that's the plan!

Kris: Glad to be able to provide something interesting to read after a long day. No surprise there about Trings getting pulled!

Fowler: Where were you off to? I'd have shoved it on charge on the 390 lol. 59003 is now dud I believe, without checking.

Blindtraveller: God I hope not, that would be a nightmare!

Fishquinn: Grr, I knew I should have done the 1555!

I'm on a mission to figure out my next bash now, but it's only 4 weeks today until New York. Some stuff to sort out but it's nearly done. All being well I'll be out again either next Monday or the Monday after. I have no idea where yet mind!

I do want to come to London, but I can't afford to do so any time soon. I might be planning a trip there in the spring now, but there's just so much I need to do...

Tech, so you've nailed the beast at long last. Huge, huge congratulations. A Monday well spent. And to get some new shacks in the book as well. There can't be much left to bag for you on a WMDR now?

Was doing my normal little move which is the 36 mins past the hour from West Allerton to Parkway, the Preston service in to Lime Street, buy a Virgin return to Crewe and then see what I feel like doing when I get there.

Shacks wise, just Polesworth remains to be got.

Trains wise, I have Chiltern 165s, 172/1s, 168/3s, 68012, any blue 68s (apart from 003/005/006) and, between Crewe and Stoke, EMT 153s and 156s. Oh, and 10 Midland Metro trams. Not much, and all bar the EMT stuff can be done on a Daytripper so a cheaper bash for me!

185143 and Kite159 are just two people I know who've done Polesworth, wouldn't surprise me if Fishquinn's also got it!

Glad you enjoyed Lord S. Goon :)

I fully expect to be on another bash again soon, I would like it to be Monday but finances need checking first, following a rather lovely meal at The Beefy Boys (only 20 more new brews required to hit my target on Untappd for the year, by the way) earlier. Oh my lordz that went down well! Certainly it helped things on a miserable day!

As usual, my TPP thread will be updated when things are organised. I do have a feeling the magic plastic will come in handy...

Ah good old Polesworth platform, not the nicest place to hang around for a delayed 350 with a man in a pickup ready to lock the gate as soon as the train departs. Which makes sense as services do thunder past

Well done on clearing the Pendolinos.
It's always good to clear a class, even when that class is as awful as the 390s ;)

Kite, I reckon Mr Quinn will beat me to it somehow! I'd like to beat him to it mind!

55013: Glad you enjoyed the read. Most of my 390 travels are in peace and quiet with plenty of tables and windows to choose from. The one from Coventry to the Bat Cave on Monday was an exception for me mind, but then it was a time of disruption!

Due to the delay it's not too long to wait for the next pair, which were double duds 319425+319007, to score Ravensbourne. There's a +25 now, so I get a small coffee from the outlet by the ticket office [I knew it was a good idea to not spend my loose change yesterday! - Ed] while I wait. By now I'm strongly considering heading home early, I'm so tired. Eventually the coffee and breakfast kick in and I revise that thought, and I get some tunes on for a bit, the first of them since my Pumped Up Playlist around 0505. I was certainly in for a nice surprise now mind, dud 387124 was leading winner 387115 on a stopper to Bedford! ..

Nice to see you supporting the coffee seller at my local station...it's also about the only source of refreshment for several miles!

Don't suppose you know what working it was that produced the 387s? I've still never seen any on the Catford loop.

Good question! I think it was the 1030 Sevenoaks to Bedford, it was the 1105 frm Ravensbourne to Bedford if that helps.

Day 1 of my latest trip (today!) is here thanks to Travelodge's 30 minutes of free WiFi:

14/02/2014 - Tech's Everytime We Bash, Day 1

Talk about last minute with this one! I had been contempating a day out on Monday for the last few days, then somehow I got into making plans for the Sunday as well! I blame getting all competitive with Fishquinn on the forum over a certain shack in the Midlands...At one point this week I had been going to bust out the magic plastic to get up to Manchester and have a serious clearout on Metrolink, then last night I also strongly considered a London bash. I decided to put that off though, I couldn't stop myself booking the Travelodge [I know, I know, but nowhere else was convenient - Ed] in Rugby near the station. I'm sure you're already knowing what I'm up to! I'm less than pleased paying by credit card [also known to me as 'the magic plastic' - Ed] attracts a £2 fee but it had to be done. £41 for a booking the night before I needed to stay is not bad going in my eyes!

So the trip title and hashtag, what are they about? Well once again it's a musical reference, this time to Cascada's Every Time We Touch. My brother got me into the Nightcore version of it [feel free to YouTube it and have a listen, see if you like it too! - Ed] which I find much more upbeat and just generally better. Of course, some of you will no doubt remember I had a lot of Nightcore tunes on during my last trips, especially before ditching Rubbishify [Spotify - Ed] in January. So began a love affair with this genre, indeed as I'm typing this I've got some of it now. Be warned they will attract more musical references for other trips in the coming months, one of which I'm saving for a major London bash...

So Sunday morning saw a rushed bag prep followed by coffee and Weetos for breakfast, having had a de-rance the night before. I hitch a lift into town with my mum and sister, and 170631 is on the 1006 to the Bat Cave. Unusually, 175103 is on the 1009 to Fishguard Harbour, normally that's a 150 and 153 when I see it. Armed with my Off Peak Return to Rugby for £25.50, I board and find a seat on a busy service. I have a ton of bookwork to do, including updating my NREA from Monday's moves! Naturally enough I get to work on that, after I start tapping out the trip report of course. It gets very busy from Worcester, as not only do we have the shopping fanatics on board but I also have to endure football nutters blocking the train up! I manage to squeeze through, just, after Shrub Hill to get to the facilities, and as I trek back after Droitwich Spa it's like the Tube on here! I somehow make it back to my seat and find no-one's taken it by some miracle, and it's a battle off at the Bat Cave which we reach 2 minutes late at 1139. When I've got to get my Daytripper yet too, a 16 minute connection was feeling tight, but I march on as fast as possible and there's thankfully no queue at the ticket office window.

£6.50 later I'm armed with my Daytripper and fully expect to find 68010 as it seems to stalk me normally. Imagine my surprise when it's winner 68012 and when I discover it's a winner for sight too I'm well chuffed! Off to Solihull then as happy as Larry [strangely enough I know no-one called Larry! - Ed] and am awaiting the 1212 Snow Hill to Marylebone, which according to a thread on the forum should have a 168/3 on it. In the meantime, I have a Nescafe Latter from Newswave next to the station, which I discovered was £2. No I'll not do that again then! It turned out to be correct gen, as I score double winners 168324+168329 for the leap to Dorridge. 3 Chiltern winners for me in the Midlands is most impressive, considering how little I need now. I discover here that I have a +27 for the next train to Moor Street, and it's the stopper from Leamington Spa. Ooh, potentially a winner 165 coming up, can I make it 4 Chiltern winners today?

After a quick supply raid in the Sainsburys petrol station for a large bottle of Pepsi Max for £1, I'm back at the station for a fester. Dud 165008 is next up, ah well you can't win them all! I make it into a Super Dud, the second new member of that club [168329 is the other, having had 79399 many years ago - Ed] today so far. Back at Moor Street, I check out the 1312 off Snow Hill in case it's a 168/3, but it's 168003 again so I race back over and join 172337 for a trip to Jewellery Quarter, taking it one step closer to Super Dud status. After 4 minutes at Snow Hill we finally move forward and it's Deckchair Mode on the Midland Metro platforms. The PIS proudly boasts a full 15 minute service today, but fails miserably when it tells me the next Wolverhampton-bound tram is 21 minutes away! It eventually corrects itself, and I flag 32 and 33 in their relevant directions, leaving me time to help a passenger figure out which platform she needed. I had to ask her about 5 times exactly where she wanted, eventually figuring out she wanted Soho Benson Road.

Even though the sun is shining today, it's still nippy. I devour a pasty for lunch, and dud tram 18 rolls in. Yeah I'll take it to Bull Street still, I can get a Costa coffee in the 15 minutes between one tram and the next, which should be easy I tell myself, as it's only 2 minutes away. The service is terrible in here, the food service was much worse mind and I swear down a lady had someone else's panini, itself getting left lurking around for several minutes. I eventually get my coffee, and even with 5 baristas service is both poor and just downright miserable. It was starting to look close for time, by the time a rushed PNB was had I figured I only had a few minutes left. As it turned out there's about a 5 minute turnaround here on Sundays, otherwise I'd certainly have only just made it. What is it with my fortune and Costa in Birmingham? Almost everywhere else manages just fine, except this city. Even Baker Street managed OK by me, and that was just before they were closing!

Dud tram 23 is next up, and I decide to ride on it anyway as it could be a long wait otherwise. I'll see what's on the depot I decide, in case I can score some trams for sight. As I finish my coffee, which I must admit I was glad of having, it's time again for Tech's Mobile Disco to come back on. A 27 minute journey gets me to Wednesbury Parkway, the only tram visible was dud 26. The others were on sidings way too far away to be ID'd. On the way here I had seen 20 or 30 going to Bull Street, so I knew it was only 15 minutes behind me. I'd also seen 33 coming back, so out of all 6 trams running today I knew I'd only score one of the 10 I need. Eventually the 15 minutes pass, and winner tram 20 rolls in, a winner for both sight and haulage, happy days! Off I go to Wolverhampton St Georges, where I arrive at 1509 and walk to the railway station. It's not even remotely clear which way one has to go for it, but surprisingly I get there after just a 7 minute walk.

Starship 17 [323217 - Ed] is on the 1522 and becomes the third new member of the Super Dud Club today. To begin with I couldn't hear much of the motors in 64017, the coach I needed, but I find a seat with an open hopper window and I hear far more so I'm happy. I get into quite a deep conversation by text with someone, and the journey to the Bat Cave is over before I know it. I don't think I've ever had a Starship into or out of platform 4c before, a new experience for me. I've decided by now to go to Marston Green for a visit to Sheldon Country Park, fellow aviation enthusiasts will know already but I'm going here for some plane spotting! 350376 and 350370 take me there, and it's about an 8 minute walk along a bit of a hilly route in places and I end up meeting two fellow enthusiasts here. Thanks to both of them [Ben, Brian, if you're reading this my many thanks! - Ed] I get a ton of aircraft regs, and no doubt a fair few of them will be scores for sight, especially since I got my first 787 for sight!

After a little over an hour I'm too cold and it's almost dark, so I part ways after getting some advice on binoculars and advised to get Flightradar24's app. You're darn right I will! Back at the station, I take 350267 and 350243 back to the Bat Cave, and it's now time for tea. Burger King to the rescue, where a supersize Bacon Double Cheeseburger XL meal and Dr Pepper goes down beautifully! A quick supply raid of snacks for later is done in nearby Tesco Express, and I make my way to Moor Street station to see what's on the 1855 to Marylebone. 168001, ooh I see I can make it a Super Dud now, yes that'll be just fine. I do a good deed first, and the 20p I found earlier near Costa I give to a homeless guy outside the station. I didn't have any cash on me before, and he'll need it far more than me, so it seemed sensible to pass it on. I know it's not much but it's better than nothing. On goes the charger to give the phone charge a reasonable top up until Solihull, and the tunes are back on for a while while I update the trip report. It wouldn't open in anything to begin with, as it insisted it was a PDF file, but thankfully via Android Open Office and the Recent Documents function it opened thankfully.

It's a fair bit of a fester here [+43 - Ed] but I use that time to get some serious typing done, amongst some observations and a PNB. The 1740 Marylebone to Snow Hill had 168110 and a 172 on it, so all of a sudden I quickly check the number, as I still need 172101 and 172104 to clear the class. Sadly it's 172102, the first time I see a 172 on the Snow Hill lines and it's a dud, typical! Back to typing, and I get close to up to date before I see the headlights of a 68 arriving. Will it be a blue oje, or 68012 returning, or indeed any other silver 68? Yep, the original prediction this morning of it being 68012 again came true, and I score 10273 in the set, the last coach of this one I need actually. 8 more Chiltern MK3s to get, including 3 buffet cars. Back at Moor Street, I check RTT and yep, the 2014's the next one to Rugby. A TTF is available with the 2010 to Euston, and as it's 390118 I take the opportunity to make it one step closer to a Super Dud. Getting all the First Class coaches on a 390 could take some time mind! Off at Coventry to await a pair of 350s, and 350256+350374 take me to Rugby. Much to my surprise, 153365 and 153354 had worked together on the 2011 from Nuneaton to Coventry, never seen that before!

After a short walk to the Travelodge, I'm checked in and noted the adjacent Tesco Express for the morning, I have a feeling it'll be needed. The usual night away from home stuff is done, after I finish the trip report that is. Let's fire up some stats:

Winners: 4
Shack scores: 0
New sights: 2

Rail fares: £29.00
Hotel ching: £41
General expenditure: £13.99
Total: £73.99

Now bring on the morning with its 0600 alarm, I want that frigging shack done and out of the way at long last! I would not be surprised to see Fishquinn on the same train somehow!

Good day indeed! Jealous of you clearing the silver 68s now! and more 168/3s! £41 is very reasonable for short notice and i have no issue with a Travelodge. In fact my FONW in a just over a week will see me staying there (not the one in Rugby obviously!) for very reasonable ching!

Did you find hat you was that definitely gone?

Good read Lord Tram, congrats on the clearing the Chiltern cats and bagging a few other winners too. Ah Polesworth, I knew you wouldn't let that lie for long, however I'm shocked, althugh I probably shouldn't be, that your out already to get it done and dusted. When I read, that your going for the shack scratch, I looked at polesworth station on Google Earth and fishquinn is already stood on the platform waiting for you to turn up:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

As long as he's there with some coffee!

Glad you both enjoyed the read :) Yeah the hat is definitely gone sadly. Jealous of the FoNW, I want to do another of those!

Polesworth, yeah it's been on the hitlist for way too long, one of only 4 shacks to get to clear the entire WCML. The others being Hartford, Euxton Balshaw Lane and Shieldmuir. I couldn't leave it much longer, and I certainly wasn't willing to let Fishquinn get to it first!:lol:<D

Great read Tech, I haven't been too active on here recently (life, eh!) but your text prompted me to pop my head in and have a look.

You may be interested to know that I read this report to the missus (how's that for a bedtime story!) - she seemed to enjoy your detailed account. Although I may have replaced the numbers with "a diesel train he hasn't travelled on before" and such like!

Good luck with Polesworth :)

Good choice of terminology there, although I have to admit I wasn't expecting you to be reading it to the missus!

Aye I noticed you'd been quiet on here, I've not been on as much as I should be either. I'm running low on mobile data now, but it thankfully replenishes itself on the 20th so it should be fine.

Managed an OK night in the end, although I would have liked to be on the Cally Insomnie, after seeing a Freightliner 90 on it by chance this morning by chance. Yep, I've got a room overlooking the railway! Hopefully I'll get Day 2 posted tonight, the fun and games are about to begin...
