Sounds like a decent time was had both on the shack and red-pen fronts - and a sociable time was had as well with a coming-together of various forum members. Looks as though the sad event at Leyland day didn't mess up your day too much.

My curry tonight is currently warming up - I have a friend whose hobby is making curries, and he left one for me to collect today (useful things, local pubs... :) )

Oh god no with that fire dragon curry, my insides wouldn't cope with that!

As it's now rather late, I don't have a ton of time to reply to all the comments, but I have read them and appreciate them all! Here is Day 3, a bit different to the plan but I still enjoyed it!

31/07/2015 - Tech's 10th Basherversary, Day 3

After a reasonable sleep, which was disrupted somehow around 0600, it's up at 0730 for de-rancification. It still takes me until 0800, admittedly after waking up with a couple of tunes, to be in a position to go for breakfast. I'm told cooked food is 9.95 and continental breakfast 4.95, as I'd apparently got a Room Only booking. Oh well, not paying that for hot food so I really fill up on the rest of it. The ham looked minging [I believe that's slang for disgusting, the word originating in Birmingham but I could be wrong - Ed] so passed on that. The stomach somewhat happier now, I ask at reception about anywhere to print a coach ticket. As I still had the email, she very kindly offered to print it for me. I definitely need new ink for my printer, the difference between my printout and this one was massive! So I was more than grateful for the help. The free WiFi didn't like me here, Waterstones' WiFi worked though somehow so wasn't complaining about that! The shower was excellent and the bed, well not terribly comfy but I managed OK and it's still a lot better than Travelodge beds! When I get to the station I see the 0914 is delayed, and the 390 heading north was dud 390044. I get gen on the ones I need, unlikely to get more than one of them today. 37409 leads for the trip to Preston, and we're 24 down after waiting for 350405 to clear off. Thrash was key now and 409 didn't disappoint at all!

I had originally planned to go to Poulton-le-Flyde to meet up with Blindtraveller and to score the shack, but that changed once we were significantly held up! I text him to tell him to change plans as I jump on dud 390107 to take me to Wigan North Western for a positioning move. Turns out he's being held up by holidaymakers leaving Blackpool, so we won't be too far behind plan after all. I spy two 319s [369 and 361 - Ed] on 1031 and 1101 to Lime Street, if I wasn't here for something in particular I'd have gone for one of them! 390130 produces as per gen, 3 more to go! A short charge of the phone is needed after heavy use of it this morning, and we leave 10 down so the plan to do the 1100 off Preston is out! We arrive at 1059 and due to large crowds on the 1100 to Colne I manage to find Blindtraveller and we still have time to board dud 142011 on it. Off to Accrington we go as the Tesco next door will come in handy for a cafe move and some coffee. We discover here, over some fairly reasonable coffee, that there were signalling issues out of Manchester Victoria, so our planned move's inbound working is rather late. Much to our surprise it's Heaton 156463 on the trip to Blackburn, and we head back to the eastbound platform to await a rather late York-bound dud 158756, so I can get my first shack score of the day at Burnley Manchester Road. Another DMU now in the League of Super Duds!

We discover here that the 1220 Blackburn to Manchester Victoria is now non-stop from Todmorden due to the delays from earlier. A fast run on a 156 is more than welcome by noth of us, and eventually we're off. This move of course is one that uses Todmorden Curve, which we both need and to my advantage I score the crossovers at both ends of it! A fast run indeed had, going from 13 down to right time at Manchester Victoria at 1330! It's time for a tram move now and winner 3019 takes us on an 8 minute journey to Piccadilly. Sadly, we miss a 319 to Liverpool by a minute which was most disappointing. Nothing interesting for a while now, and winner 185143 shows up on a Liverpool service so we scoop it to Oxford Road. The following 350, winner 350408, is had onwards but by GOD it was heaving! As I needed a PNB badly by now, I wasn't amused. We bail at Wigan as a result, and once that was done we end up on dud 156424 to Blackpool North, as Blindtraveller needed to be there soon. I bail at Poulton-le-Fylde for shack score 2 today, and as there's a pair of 156s due on a TPX working I get them onwards to Blackpool North. The plan now was to make sure Blindtraveller got to where he needed to and help him through the chaos that is North station. He'll no doubt cover this morning's farce in his trip report, but he's now vowed to only use South instead! I see on my arrival here winner 156440 on the 1621 to Manchester Victoria.

I make sure I'm on it to score the shack at Layton, so once Blindtraveller's in his taxi I go through the barrier again [only the second time doing that in 3 days so far! - Ed] and we eventually leave 5 down for no apparent reason. Less time festering I suppose! The double duds 156s from the leap into North [156452+156487, both now Super Duds - Ed] are back to take me to Preston, and I get the trip report back up to date, having not touched it since Preston at 1059! No chance of making it to Wigan in time for the 1530 Euston to Glasgow so I camp out at Preston. No good beers on at the bar so I end up at Ritazza for a small coffee, filling another slot on my card for there. 47760 thrashed through on its way south with an ECS move, 47403 on the forum will be jealous! No doubt due to today's WCML disruptions, dud 390132 rolls in instead of 390121, boo! Change of plans then, see what's off to Manchester. Winner 350405 will do to Wigan, with plans to go 319 bashing next then go from there. Thankfully I make it onto winner 319365 for my first Northern Electrics 319 action, loved it! Bryn is shack score 4 today, and I make the tight plus onto dud 156428 back towards Wigan. I see a tight-ish plus is available at Euxton Balshaw Lane, so I go for it. Power bank is needed by now, and I'm in need of finding a meal somewhere as I've not eaten in almost 10 hours at this point!

We're held at Wigan for a non-stop 390, which had had a green for 15 minutes. The plus at Euxton well gone, I pass on that and bail at Wigan. The next Liverpool is now delayed arriving, but is not a 319 as hoped but dud 156491. Powerbank dies now, so tweets grind to a halt for now. St Helens Central is to be shack score 5 and much to my irritance the WC on this 156 is locked! I have now cleared the shacks between Liverpool and Wigan via St Helens Central, more focus now available elsewhere in Merseyside. Dud 319380 was only a few minutes away, and of course I enjoy the motor coach again for the trip back to Wigan! As we arrive there, 92010 is seen flying through towards Crewe with sleeper stock, possibly to do with last night's train fault on the Inverness to London sleeper? I join dud 390126 to Warrington as I was rather keen to get a bit of phone charge going on, which I thankfully manage for the short journey. I have now got to get on with food, having last eaten around 0830, and find The Looking Glass (Spoons) for Fish Friday. Three Spoons meals in 3 days! My pint also goes down beautifully, it must be said. Base camp tonight is Travelodge in Warrington, and I'm not far from it so all is good. Check in not too much later is easy as usual at Travelodge and I make sure I put the powerbank on charge straight away!

A call home is made and my stuff is all prepared for the morning. Got to be done now as I won't fancy doing it at 0500 I can promise you all that! De-rancification now, once I post this trip report, then probably a bit of TV to finalise the unwind before some sleep. Why an 0500 alarm? Find out in tomorrow's trip report, which shall be up either very late evening or very early Sunday morning, pending how the coach journey goes! Until then, hope all of you are well and wish me luck, don't be too envious of me being out super early on the rails while you're dossing away!

a rather rewarding day it must be said, pitty about the Afternoon going to pot, looks as if you recovered though and Id have gladly participated if not working. Todmorden Curve is a bit fiddly and moves to line up for it are a tad slow so to anyone, be warned!

Heres my take on it all, not that anyone really seams interested

worth noting that Im not anti Blackpool north as a direct result of being poorly served as a customer but more on principal. If you want to catch a spesiffic train, you shouldnt be told by some agency jobsworth you cant. Niether should they be delaying passengers for ever and a day or locking them off the platforms till the last minute. Truly poor and not tollerable.

Two great days there (despite some unfortunatel hiccups along the way). Was really good to finally meet and greet you and Blindtraveller and hope you enjoyed bashing the local line :)

Heaton units are a regular occurrence in the north west so I'm not surprised in the least you came across a few - remember you're at the mercy of the Northern Rail random unit generator up here!

I will read about Blackpool North when I get round to Blindtraveller's report. Suffice to say after my experience last month I too will be avoiding the place like the plague!

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

I hate Blackpool North as a station, I don't mind being being held on the concourse per se but when they don't let you board until literally 3 minutes before departure and scrutinise your tickets practically with a magnifying glass before letting you pass. It's almost as if a) they don't want you to board, and b) are automatically accusing you unless you have categoric evidence to the contrary - no reason trains are often late departing, and you hear of complaints about trains being missed, staff being 'obstructive', etc.

Skegness has a similar policy but I've never felt under pressure there, yes they check tickets but it's more a casual glance.

Day 4 is over, as is the North West rover :'( :'( :'( Absolutely loved it and have added it to 2016's plans! At Birmingham Coach Station, still an hour until I get on the coach to Glasgow so time for the trip report!

01/08/2015 - Tech's 10th Basherversary, Day 4

Wow, it's August! Good grief isn't this year flying by, same for this trip which is now in the second half. Flask and travel mug are filled and I'm out of the front door at 0520. The rain's arrived and en-route my Aldi bag fails. Thank Goodness I had just enough spare capacity in my holdall and a carrier bag! After a 10 minute walk, utilising my Pumped Up Playlist on YouTube, I'm at the station. 2 plays of Scott Majestic's Acid Dreams [incredibly hard hardcore track, be warned if you play it! - Ed] has got me pumped up after less than 4 hours doss. To my amazement even after over 8 hours of charging, my powerbank was still not fully charged! Super Dud 150132 is on the 0549 to Ellesmere Port, and a chat with the guard reveals it'll be this 150 again later. I would have liked to start August off with a winner but never mind! The original plan had been to score Helsby then Frodsham, however I'm now seeing a better use of my time and doing the limited service shacks instead, so first up is Stanlow and Thornton! After that I rejoin 150132 to Ince and Elton, scoring two rather limited service stations.Next up is a tight plus at Ellesmere Port, something like a +2 I believe, for a trip to Hooton. I could try my luck via Helsby, but it's only a +3 off the ATW run for the Halton Curve train [0753 Chester to Runcorn, summer Saturdays only - Ed] so not risking that one!

The official connection at Ellesmere Port gets me to Hooton at 0726, which I'm hoping I don't have to do as that will be ultra tight at Chester! We arrive at 0643 so a most comfortable connection. Big up Brian the conductor with Northern on the Ellesmere Port services this morning, very friendly guy! Dud 507031 is next to Hooton, shame it wasn't one I needed! PNB carried out, with no ATM nearby and no MtoGo shop open [I see they do Costa Express coffee loyalty cards at those shops now! - Ed] it's back to the platform to await the 0712 to Chester. Unfortunately it's dud 508143, nevertheless it's now one step away from Super Dud status as is 507031. An ATM move is required for a bus bash later this morning, hopefully I'll find one now. I still need something for breakfast too, something my stomach is starting to scream about now! I have a lightbulb moment, and yes I can easily do Runcorn to Warrington via Liverpool South Parkway, so no need for the bus move to somewhere near Runcorn East. Granted it means a 20 minutes or so walk in Warrington but I'll still make it for the train Blindtraveller will be on. 150132 has indeed stuck to diagram and is forming the Summer Saturdays Only 0753 Chester to Runcorn, via Halton Curve. The queue in Costa was huge, and very slow going in cafexpresshop too so I decide to flag food here after all. Hard to believe it's already 2 hours into the bash! I see the ATW run was a pair of 175s this morning, arriving at platform 3 at 0751.

That would have meant a maximum of a +2 to get to platform 5, thank Goodness I didn't do it! The first food in just under 12 hours is had now, in the form of the packet of shortbread from base camp in Lancaster. I also start on my flask of coffee [many thanks to Blindtraveller for donating it to me! - Ed], and fortunately I have my supply of sugar packets with me. Annoyingly I cannot currently find my highlighter, which sucks as I've had it for ages and didn't want to lose it :( No milk for my coffee as I didn't find a shop for it. 0810 we hit Halton Curve, finally getting it done! We scrap quite a few branches on our way around the curve, which is longer than I thought, rejoining the mainline at 0815. I just realised it's actually quite a nice day! Not a fan of black coffee but needs must! Feeling slightly more refreshed now but still need more caffeine. 350264 takes me to Liverpool South Parkway, and my first winner of the day is 150223 for the trip to Warrington Central. A bit of a marching walk is done in 12 minutes, which surprised me a bit. By the time dud 390009 rolls in my stomach is almost tying itself in knots, so the bacon roll was beyond welcome and very much worth £3! Time for a bit more coffee en-route to Preston, where I'm due to meet Blindtraveller for a northbound journey. Of course, as I was already down to 54% charge in my phone the charger was in at a lucky available table straight away!

Meeting back up with Blindtraveller at Preston, we board his train to Edinburgh which is sadly 390137, dud earlier this year after a leap to Sandwell and Dudley. Onwards anyway for a good chinwag, and my phone gets more charge curteousy of the table seat his wife had kindly reserved for us both! I'm up to 91% by Carlisle which is more than welcome. I was going to score Dumfries off dud 156510, however I get gen on 390016 which is off to Manchester. I also get told 37603 is out today, which I need. However as it's on the north end I probably won't get it today, and it was booked to do the 1156 to Lancaster, which was showing platform 2 with dud 153331. As it is deemed likely it'll come off instead I revert to heading south on winner 350402. Amazingly it's not totally rammed and I have a table seat with power socket available, excellent! As the gen has had a habit of being incorrect due to changes lately I'm in two minds as to whether to actually trek all the way to Manchester for the +9. Long way to go after all for something that may not produce! By the time we approach Oxenholme I shall have pondered it I should imagine. Of course, the best bit about going up and down the WCML a lot lately is the lovely scenery! I get confirmation of a good connection into a Windermere train so go for it. As much as I'd like to go for the 390, if it was 100% confirmed as being out on 1335 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston I'd have braved it!

There's also the fact that I need plenty of shacks up here so would prefer to crack on with some of them. Good move as it turns out as winner 185136 is on the branch today! 20305+20308 idle through on southbound flasks, phwoar! We get held to TPX's credit for a late Edinburgh, and I see 390114 going south which I would not have made by the time I got my bags and charger together. We're only calling at Kendal I see, that'll have to do then! Coffee stop as I cannot be bothered to walk into town, and the flask is nearly empty. I will have saved a fortune on coffee so far today. Gen on 390121 comes through and there's a possibility of getting it. 114 is not gettable now, but if 390121 produces I'll be down to 2 more 390s to get, which will be fine! See what happens I guess! 185136 is taken back to Oxenholme, and the next Windermere was certainly a lot busier! Dud 350407 takes me to Lancaster, where a short-ish fester is due for what should be a winner 390. I have my fingers crossed, and 4 hours after my bacon roll this morning I'm now with an angry stomach again! At least I'm now down to 7 185s to go, very slowly making progress there! Plenty of time to spare so I head into town for lunch. Extremely busy in the town centre, and I settle for McDonalds for my usual meal from there. This 390 is getting quite late, and I really hope it is indeed the one I'm waiting for this time! Eventually it arrives and yes, it is indeed 390121, 2 more to go. :D

I now owe my source [not that they've asked for it mind, but feels only fair - Ed] 3 pints for all the ones that I've managed to get this week, with just 390016 and 390114 to get now! Off to Preston I go, with no firm plan on what to do next but just go with the flow. I originally go for dud 185127 for a shack score on the Windermere branch, just in time 350410 rolls in as a winner with dud 350406 on the back. So I run off quick, realising halfway to Wigan I've lost my coat on the overhead rack! A call to Lost Property gets through then the signal drops out, on both tries, so I'll try again in Wigan. I finally get in touch and I'm going to ring them around 1550 to see if it's been found. I sincerely hope so, as my house key is in it! If I didn't need to go back to Oxenholme I could have had double winners 150113 and 142048! Dud 390103 finally turns up, and I see I can get my booked train to Birmingham from Oxenholme so I should be safe. I ring lost property back, and they try contacting Windemere but they aren't answering! I'm really getting irritated now, not having fun at all. It is now logged and message going out to all TPX stations about it apparently, shall see what I can do at Oxenholme. At least in Lancaster the sun is back out! I consider going for one of Virgin Trains' ales or ciders, but no card payments available this afternoon, oh well maybe later. Would have played some tunes to help pass the time but they're in the coat!

To add insult to injury, 37603 was indeed on the back of the 1156 Carlisle to Lancaster! Looks like I wouldn't have made it back from Carnforth to Preston for my booked train though. When I finally arrive at 1619, I find out straight away that it's been handed in. Miracle! I have a natter with the TM who confirms what RTT says, which is that I have time to take it to Staveley and back before my train home. If I had been on time into Oxenholme I would have made it onto a pair of winning 350s south! Never mind, it's time to make this 185 into a Super Dud and to get shack score number 4 today. If I'd been on the 1939 off Warrington I'd have had time to go after all 3 350s I need, which really sucks! Beautiful weather again now at Staveley, and 185127 takes me back to Oxenholme with a decent connection for my booked train to Birmingham New Street. I considered staying on the 185 to Preston, but I didn't fancy the risk of it getting looped or anything resulting in a missed connection! Fresh Super Dud 185127 is taken back to Oxenholme, although paranoia is setting in that I didn't read RTT right and my next train doesn't call at Oxenholme. I hope I'm not right on that one! Panic over, timetable confirmed it is the 1744 from Oxenholme for me, hopefully this shop is open and takes card payments! It's dud 390124 for the long journey to the Midlands, and the shop is already closed for the staff changeover at Preston. There goes my coffee move for now then!

I start now planning what to do and where to go for my tea, although it's most likely I'll do McDonalds again for the convenience. I can't believe the rover is already over, not done some of the stuff that was planned but equally done a lot that wasn't planned. 3 days of WCML disruptions really didn't hell at all mind! I've also had some good company for a lot of it with Blindtraveller, and crehld too albeit for a short time. The coach I'm not looking forward to now, but the SPT Daytripper bit I am. I suppose I really should get on with updating the moves book shortly too, lots to add! 3 days worth in fact, took me a solid hour! Been a good run, gone from 8 down off Oxenholme to 2 down off Crewe. Back on my stomping grounds now [basically everywhere in the WMDR area, apart from the dreaded XC routes - Ed] and I've had tunes on for just over an hour now too, needed something to keep me going since coffee wasn't available when I wanted it! I see quite a bit of work is coming on now with the new Norton Bridge flyover, rather looking forward to the improvements that'll bring and, of course, the new track in my area! A long way to go yet of course. Kite159 confirms he will be joining me shortly at Sandwell and Dudley, as he's on a West Midlands Daytripper. This Eden Falls water I bought on Tuesday [yes it really did take me until this evening to start it! - Ed] is surprisingly good, I'm going to use it much more often!

11 minutes layover tonight at Wolverhampton, and I see I've done OK today, with 5 winners and 4 shack scores. During the NW rover, I managed 24 and 21 shack scores, beating both my targets which was welcome! Only 2 days of the 6 left, and they're also gruelling marathon missions, but I'm still looking forward to them both. As we leave Wolverhampton I note I've been on the bash for 14 hours, not done such a long day in, well, a long time! Arrival into Birmingham Bat Cave is at 2008, 3 down. Kite159 and I originally headed to McDonalds for tea, but it was well busy so divert to Tesco Metro instead. He gets his meal and I see him off on the 2030 to York. Meanwhile I head back into town for my tea, via Morrisons Local for a big bottle of Dr Pepper for a quid [I was a little bored of just water for now! - Ed]

Spoons, although a dud one, was the choice until I heard the big crowd of hooligans outside it. No chance! Subway is done for tea, not the terrible one by Moor Street of course, and the usual footlong is had. Doing so well for budgeting lately, fair dos, that I might not overly exceed my usual weekly spending budget after all, and without using my Costa points yet too! I head to the coach station, nearly 15 minutes walk away, and call home. Mum's far less than happy I'm on a coach overnight, telling me I need to hurry up, grow up and get a wife as she can't stand the worrying anymore! Time of course now with a 75 minute fester by now to finish the trip report and get it posted.

Next up is a boring fester and then onto the 2230 route 336 via Stoke on Trent, Manchester Airport, Manchester, Preston and somewhere else, due into Glasgow at 0615. My earplugs are ready and I'm now looking forward to some shut-eye! I'll discuss the coach journey via Twitter in the meantime and of course in the trip report for Day 5. Happy reading!

Good stuff as always Tech, as I said, hope the coach isn't too hellish. Real shame that the coat loss caused you to miss some potential red pens, but no worries - next time!

Look forward to the next few days' updates and reports :)

Aye the lost property issues were a real pain in the face, but at least it was recovered!

As for the coach, well it's leather seated and I thankfully have a power socket, and we're due away from Sandbach Services shortly. Maybe now sleep will arrive...

I can't get over how many times you've been through and at Wigan North Western.

How did you find Bryn?
Have you scratched off Ince (Manchester) yet? You don't need to, we can pretend you have as it is the dump of Wigan.

Looks like a great adventure was had.
I'm looking forward to day 5, fingers crossed you get your last 314.

While you were heading North, I was going South.
The report of my three day move will be along in due course.

Another good write-up!

Glad you got your coat back. All an annoyance which adds to the journey so they say!

Hope the coach wasn't too bad.

Looking forward to Day 5! :)

To answer a previous question, the only 319 working North of Wigan at the moment is the 1800 Liverpool to Preston. The set stables and runs ECS to Wigan the next morning. On a Friday the set stables till Monday.

Another great read there Tech and I'm glad you had a good time on the North West Rover. Looks like you had exactly the same idea as me last month getting in the Halton curve, Ince and Elton and Stanlow and Thornton - a bout of food poisoning put paid to that adventure :(

I take it you had no issues with security at Stanlow and Thornton? And good to hear a good news lost property story for a change - I've lost so many coats, umbrellas, books and other things on trains before - never to see them again!

Hope the coach journey wasn't too bad! I'm on an SPT daytripper myself next weekend as part of the forum Strathclyde challenge. All new territory for me so should be fun!

Cracking read so far tech, shame about the coat, least you got it back, a bit of a hinderance but it ended well. I see my old pest, 185143 got scored too, seen it 4 times since it made it's most welcome appearance, whilst I was at Donny that day.

47760 thrashed through on its way south with an ECS move, 47403 on the forum will be jealous!
Indeed I am, there's nothing would sound sweeter to my ears.
Enjoy the rest of the trip mate.
happy hunting

I will reply to your comments soon, at the moment I'm rushing to post this before I get to Euston as I need to change yet!

02/08/2015 - Tech's 10th Basherversary, Day 5

Already on the penultimate day? Far too quick this is going! Well, apart from last night's boring 90 minute fester at the coach station. Why oh why did I book something so ridiculous? Eventually the coach arrived from Plymouth at 2218, and I board FN63 PWJ [a Caetano for the record - Ed] for the 2230 route 336 to Edinburgh, calling at Stoke on Trent, Manchester Airport, Manchester, Preston, Lancaster, Preston, Lancaster, Carlisle, Hamilton and Glasgow. Obviously I'm not going to Edinburgh, will be glad to alight at Glasgow at 0615! Ticket checks take forever, and we leave 5 minutes late at 2235. Below are the tunes I played for the first part of the journey on YouTube:

Wishmaster - The Misheard Lyrics: https://youtu.be/gg5_mlQOsUQ

Songify This: Charlie Sheen Interview: https://youtu.be/9QS0q3mGPGg

Push - Strange World (2000 remake): https://youtu.be/n4Hh2G_Ygh8

The Offspring -Why Don't You Get A Job: https://youtu.be/RhalnCwP82s

The Offspring - All I Want: https://youtu.be/8XT6rdJ4zLU

Lily The Pink: https://youtu.be/u7pHDoJrrzA

Styles and Breeze - Let's Fly: https://youtu.be/2tFM19gOZTY

Just thought I'd share that lot with you all, as a bit of an insight into the randomness of my musical tastes! Sleep is on its way its seems, as yawning is occuring. I finally get my trainers off, as it feels like a blister is developing on the right foot. After over 17 hours in them that wouldn't surprise me!

Just after midnight I'm feeling the need for some sleep, after all there's only a little over 6 hours to go until we get to Glasgow. We arrive at Sandbach Services at 0016, the break supposed to be for 30 minutes but we're apparently running late so it's cut back to 15 minutes. Not much here, just McDonalds, Costa and WHSmith! I'm on the forum for a while now, and at 0103 we're away from the Manchester Airport call. 5 more stops to go yet, I have a hunch I'm going to suffer later! The earplugs I have are just powerful enough, I'd love to have a pair of those industrial ones again, they were amazing! I check out RTT for options when I arrive, and Central for the 0720 to Gourock is probably the best option after breakfast, which will almost certainly be McDonalds on Argyle Street. Some doss, more from sheer exhausation, finally arrives between Manchester and Preston! As I'm freezing cold though I keep waking up too. We have another break at Tebay Services, the one with a Westmoreland farm shop, which is handy for a PNB. I keep my coat on this time when I re-board the coach, and we're away again just after 0340. I hope some more doss is on the way again, just Carlisle and Hamilton to go before Glasgow now! Fortunately it only takes 25 minutes to re-find whatever comfy spot I must have had and wake up in Hamilton. Might as well get ready now, and arrive at Glasgow Buchanan Street at 0618, 3 down. I'm not doing an overnight coach again, as I'm sure you've all guessed!

Sorry to go on a fair bit there, certainly you'll have a lot of insight into the journey! McDonalds on Argyle Street is done for breakfast, and I send my coffee flying much to my disgust! It doesn't take long to devour my breakfast, unsurprising since I hadn't eaten for 9.5 hours. I buy a replacement coffee after changing clothes, and now I'm on 5 out of 6 stickers on my card so there's the silver lining. At Central there's nowhere to buy a SPT Daytripper until 0915, but the barrier guy advises to ask the guard on the 0720 to Gourock, which is the first train of the day here. It's dud 314214 [so close to 213! - Ed] which now is made into a Super Dud for the trip to Hillington West. Of course, I'm in a motor coach! The plan now is to walk back to Hillington East to pick up the Wemyss Bay, but not convinced it's doable in 30 minutes yet. I check the map on the eastbound platform and it should be easy enough to do the walk in 25 minutes. In the end it took me 14 minutes from the westbound platform at West to the same at East. Two shack scores in less than 25 minutes, boom! I see on the map here that Cardonald is walkable in 20 minutes or so, tempting although the toes on my right foot are still moaning! As the Wemyss Bay is a 380, I charge on down the road instead. Only took 10 minutes of walking which surprised me. The rain has arrived now, timed that well with the walk, but it soon stops. Winner 380021 takes me to Paisley St James for shack score 4 today!

All that done in 77 minutes, not bad at all! I finally get my Daytripper, although only in the form of a Daytripper Exchange as that's all that can be done on a train. I have to exchange it at a ticket office asap. Super Dud 314214 is back, so I take it to Gilmour Street to exchange my Daytripper and hopefully have a PNB. Ticket dealt with, no lavatories due to vandalism on the station, but I do winner Spoons The Last Post next to the station. Takeaway filter coffee for 99p, then the PNB. Much more human feeling now, it's now to Glasgow. Off to the low level platforms now for a leap to Partick,to then access the Queen Street Low Level lines and join Blindtraveller's train. Winner 320310 takes me to Partick, good thing I flagged the option to score 380014 then! 4 more 320s to go, excellent. Change of plan, I remembered I needed a couple of shacks via Yoker, which this service goes via. Shack score number 5 then at Yoker! We get held for 3 minutes at Garscadden, thankfully the train back was also 3 down, dud 318253 [my last one, 318254, was stabled on Yoker depot, no chance of that then! - Ed] and a 320 on the back take me to Partick, where I meet Blindtraveller ahead of heading to Central. I see it's dud 320307 on the back, boo! The next train to Central after he arrives is not for a while, so we get back on 334014 for the leap to Hyndland, avoiding platform interchange hassle too. I see what he meant about the motor noise on this one, quite surprising!

318253 is taken next to Central and it's off to the concourse we go. Our original plan to do the 1100 to Prestwick Airport [for me to score the shack - Ed] is out as it's 1100 by the time we come off the escalators. We have a nosy around and see what's happening, noting a 314 arriving, and by sheer luck it's 314213! It's going onto the 1123 to Neilston, so it's Costa time! Large one for me today, and incidentally it turned out to be my last one of the day, much to my surprise! We of course join winner 314213 and it's naturally into the motor coach for a fun trip to Neilston. Neither of us need it but it's done anyway. We decide to have a bus bash here, as it's ages until the 314 leaves again, so we join a McGills bus on route 54 to Barrhead. Unfortunately, despite the driver being told where we wanted, he neglected to mention he served a different stop to the one we expected, so we go past the station and have to change plans now. We're next off to Braehead Shopping Centre on McGills' route 101, which is quite some way away and by the time we get there I'm more than in dire need of a lavatory now! Thankfully the shopping centre wasn't charging for access, and it's time for a decent wait for route X6a to Johnstone Station with McGills. OK it's a few minutes late, it'll be fine we tell ourselves. More waiting and waiting some more gets us both irritated badly, and it eventually turns up 32 minutes late!

Traffic is the cause apparently, and it had significantly increased in the Paisley direction by the time we get to it. We have a rather funky bus with lots of noise making capacity [of the good kind! - Ed] for the long 41 minute journey, and we eventually get to the station at 1453, 36 minutes late. That was the least of our worries right now though, as I had badly mis-read the timetable for the Stranraer line. This means poor Blindtraveller can't get his track coverage now, the main reason for coming out today! We decide to continue west anyway, thrashing out plans, on 380114 and get shack score 6 in at Prestwick International Airport. Winner 380106 takes us to Ayr, where we plan to find a chippy. As I'd not eaten since McDonalds this morning, by now I was in dire need of food. As I'm sure Blindtraveller found out, I can be very grumpy, irritable and so on when I'm tired and hungry! The chippy across the road is thankfully open so an ATM move is followed by getting tea. I get a duo jumbo battered sausage and chips meal for £3.90, and oh my LORDZ! That went down so well! Back on 380106 now, and we're still going to do the Barrhill move at this moment with a booked 52 minute fester there. Then I see a shack score opportunity, which means bailing at Kilwinning once the super late lunch/early tea was had. Good move as winner 380014 is on it, leaving me with 9 of them to go now! Shack score 7 is at Howwood, and nothing interesting here unsurprisingly.

380105 is next in all its dudness for what was going to be a shack score at Glengarnock, but I get convinced that we should stay on to Kilwinning and go for the Barrhill fester. 156 racket and a winner 156 was due up too, yeah let's do this! Winner 156500 is taken from Kilwinning to Barrhill with some good noise sampled, and at 1928 I visit the last station on the line to Kilwinning that I needed, just Glengarnock and Milliken Park to go! Thankfully the rain's held off for most of the wait here, and the last 10 minutes see us shocked that 4 other people are joining the train! I used the time here to have a good sort out in my bag, which confirmed my highlighter is gone. Winner 156430 is paired with dud 156502 to take us to Glasgow, which we decide to take to Ayr as I'm on 63% charge and that's not going to get me far! We have both run of soft drinks too, so bailing for Super Dud 380114 made lots of sense. With the pop sorted, we join the front coach and put everything on charge. A call home is made while we're in Ayr, and I get to 88% charge by the time we arrive, much healthier! 92018 is on the front of tonight's Down Lowland Cally Insomnie, winner! On time and a good noise off the 92 as we leave Central and again at Motherwell! I get cracking on typing up the trip report, which I end up stopping after I was falling asleep just after Carstairs. I finish it in the morning, after which I'm on 58% shockingly.

There we go gang, hope you enjoy Day 5. Final day now, London should be interesting!

An interesting write-up.

Must admit, not a fan of buses, so I'd not have done the overnight bus run, nor the trip during the day (trains all the way, unless RRB dictates no other option!)

Hope the sleeper train was better than the sleeper bus!

Congratulations on getting that last pesky 314 in the book.

Oh I ain't doing that coach again! Daytime National Express runs I will do mind, if the price is right. I have some unavoidable rail replacement bus moves coming my way at the end of August and early September!

The final day of the epic bash is detailed below. I will apologise to all of you following the action on Twitter, the last two days I've had appalling signal in a lot of places and had to be frightfully careful of my battery charge levels. Today for instance, after I got off the 380 last night I was on 78% charge. By 1510 I was on 11% and that was with very little use of it! Yes I had my powerbank if needs be but hey ho, bit late now. I've also been exceptionally busy during the last two days, with barely time to pick up my phone on occasions!

I should also add it was great having your company Blindtraveller over the last 5 days, it would have been a much more lonely bash otherwise! It was also a great pleasure to finally meet crehld, hassaanhc and Kristofferson!

And now, the final instalment of the trip report. Photos and videos are due to be dealt with tomorrow, while I recover from this marathon 6 days!

03/08/2015 - Tech's 10th Basherversary, Day 6

Really? The final day already?! I can't believe how fast it's gone! Arrival into London Euston is 4 down at 0651, taking in the route via Bushbury Junction, Bescot Stadium, Aston, Stetchford then via Northampton. I believe this made the sleeper journey worth it for Blindtraveller, as it involved required track! The 92 sounded good it must be said, although that rough departure at Carstairs was not welcome. Sleep came soon after though, with only a short wake-up at Preston which I swear had us in platform 1. At Euston some fresh pain au chocolats are got for breakfast. Incredibly tasty they were! Off to the LU ticket office to buy an Anytime Zones 1-4 Travelcard, and LU refuse to accept to add railcard discount for Blindtraveller's one despite it being doable. Eventually we head down and board double winners 51515+51703 to Camden Town to change for double winners 51511+51512 to Hampstead, which is shack scratch 1 today. Those lifts really are fast but smooth! We change for VW1288 on route 603 to take us to Swiss Cottage LU station, a nice and easy 7 minute ride. Time next for some Jubilee line racket, those motors! I didn't observe the rear set on this one but winner 96115 had at least on it. The train is absolutely rammed solid, to the point we physically couldn't get out of our seats, so end up going past Canary Wharf to Canada Water, where we double back.

Double winners 96008+96041 are had for the short distance, and I get us lost when heading to the East London Line, d'oh! We get there though eventually and I score winner 378146 to Brockley for shack score 2. Blindtraveller has never had a 378 and he seems quite satisfied with them, which I'm sure he'll cover in his write-up. Winner 378147 is had next to Honor Oak Park, and instead of picking up a Southern service forward [it being rather late you see - Ed] we end up on dud 378153 to Anerley for shack score 4 today. 378146 is back to take us up the road to Penge West, with 378153 also back to get us to Forest Hill [shack score 6 - Ed] and dud 377704 is up next to take us to New Cross Gate, which is useful for PNBs. I now have all the East London Line shacks done, leaving just Imperial Wharf to do on the Overground network now. Luckily for me, winner 378210 is taking us to Highbury and Islington, as Blindtraveller needs the bit north of Wapping. From there I also score 378219 on a leap to Caledonian Road and Barnsbury, where we then head east to Stratford. Sadly no more winner 378s as it's dud 378230. There's a short break here, while we wait to meet hassaanhc off his Jubilee line move. We first then go to the DLR as Blindtraveller needs the line to Stratford International and indeed to Royal Victoria. Dud 12 and winner 38 take us to the end of the line and we go straight back out to West Ham on the same pair.

We need to change here for the last bit to Royal Victoria, as 12+38 were off to Woolwich Arsenal. Not a bad thing for me as it means I score the crossover out of West Ham and we get dud 149 and winner 111 forward. It's now time to head towards town, as Blindtraveller is booked on the 1346 out of Euston. Winners 71+62 and dud 70 take us for a longer run next to Shadwell, where we change for Bank. Just as well, as I score triple winners 58+73+23 for the final stretch! I also note 87 on Poplar depot by chance, winner for sight! :D We next change to the Northern line to get to Euston, which provides winner 51557 and dud 51530 for the 10 minute journey. I finally now, as there's time, go to Costa and have my first coffee in over 25 hours! My lordz didn't it go down well too, 2.40 well spent fair dos. Before too long it's time to send Blindtraveller off on 350376 home, out of platform 17 which is a required platform for me. Hassanhc and I then go to S8 bashing, after a walk to Euston Square of course. Double winners 21081+21082 take us to Northwick Park, shack score number 7 today. Quite a nice fast run it must be said, enjoyed it! Time for a quick PNB before joining double winners 21108+21107 back to Baker Street. We then do 12326 on route 205 to Euston Bus Station, as I can then sample the new buses on it. Quite different to what I've been used to on this route in the past, but I like the hybrid action!

An 8 minute journey later, we make our way to Pret a Manger or whatever it's called to meet Kristofferson for a brief time during his interchange. Top bloke and it was a pleasure to finally meet, and I hope I spelt your username correctly! I pop back into Costa for another large coffee and another 2.40 well spent. I part ways with hassanhc now, it was a pleasure to meet you too and hope you had a good trip back home, thanks for coming out to join us! I make my way down to platform 8 for 350372 home. I had booked First Class for a power socket, in case it was a /1 or /2, if I had had the foresight to know it would be a /3 I'd have spent a tenner less on this trip! Straight on to a table and put the phone on charge, as it was down to 11%! I update my books with the Tube sightings and haulages, I did do well with 34 new sightings and 12 new haulages on the Tube! Off we go right time, and by sheer chance I find my last Southern 377, 377708, for sight as we flew through Berkhamsted! Just 377509 to see out of all the 377s now. I also note this move makes 350372 only one step away from a Super Dud! The trip report is miles behind so I get on with updating it, which took until Birmingham International! 323215 is either going to or coming from Wolverton Works, flew past it in the siding earlier, and a 319/2 was noted on Northampton depot, but as I wasn't expecting it I didn't observe the number. I put the powerbank back on charge on the way home.

After at least 10.5 hours since Friday evening's arrival at the Travelodge, it is FINALLY full. It really shouldn't take that long to charge a 2600mAh powerbank! Much to my surprise, I've only just blown my normal 50 quid spending budget for this current 7 day period [last Friday to this Thursday - Ed] and so far only by 2.25 quid! I was not expecting that before this trip began. Granted, there have been long periods of not eating, today being a good example having eaten my pain au chocolats by 0820 and nothing but a sausage sample outside Euston around 1320 since! The plan of course is to change that by Hereford, I had however expected to spend up to 100 quid on this week's spending budget on general expenditures, so to be on 52.25 quid spent [with a 7-odd dig into last week's 9-ish underspend - Ed] in the 4 days of this budget is fine going! Obviously I've got more to pay out for when I go back to work, but I'll be no more than 20 quid over normal even then. The king of budgeting! Anyway, perhaps more insight than required but it provides an idea of what can be achieved if needs be! Also of note is that I've been adding to my Costa Coffee Club points, not using them, which I hadn't expected! We're held outside New Street for a while, due to overhead line issues. Whether I make the 1749 home or not remains to be seen, but at least my phone's got to 78% charge and you've all learnt a 6 day trip like mine is doable on a budget!

It takes 5 minutes to get outside and race into Sandhu News for a can of Rubicon Mango, as there was no way I'd have time for a Costa move! Thankfully the ECS from Tyseley for the 1749 to Hereford, my final train of the epic 6 day bash, is delayed as the late 1738 to Derby is in its way. I can't believe it's almost all over! I was going to put some tunes on, but circumstances changed...If we hadn't been 16 down I'd have had time for an early tea in Birmingham, however I resort to doing so at Hereford instead. Might as well as I have a +100 there! I have the moves book and Quails to do on this move, but as LM have kindly put 150105 on the back of 170508 on the 1749 to Hereford [a few of you will already have known this due to me texting like mad! - Ed] I cancel playing tunes and doing bookwork! We leave 10 minutes late, not too bad considering the ECS didn't arrive until 1756! Some figures for you then [which I don't mind working out while listening to the thrash - Ed]:

Winners: 56
Shack scores: 36
New sights: 48

Rail fares: 161.40
Bus fares: 8.20
Hotel ching: 105.56
Coach fares: 21.00
General expenditure: 100.11

Total cost of trip: 396.27

A bargain for 6 days of heaven!

[Obviously all figures in GBP but the pound sign doesn't translate right off my phone! - Ed]

In the end I tick off the shack scores in the Baker during the journey, then decide what to do for tea, bearing in mind it'll form both lunch and tea. Arrival is smack on time at 1923 and I go to Hereford Charcoal Grill for a large doner meat and chips with a can of Coke for 6.50. Their card reader wouldn't work despite 4 attempts, so I visit the, thankfully, free to use ATM at the petrol station. My lordz, what an enormous meal it was too, I struggled towards the end to eat it! Next up was a trip to Morrisons, which was very busy indeed for this time of night, and pick up a bottle of Strathmore Still Strawberry and Apple water to try. 1.5 litre bottle was only 64p too!

The trip officially ends when I board Y876 PWT [Optare Solo - Ed] on the 2045 bus home. The end of such an amazing trip! Yes there were bad moments, such as the extreme fail with planning on Day 5, but as Blindtraveller said himself, it was a good thing I noticed before we actually went and did it! Sadly he still needs Barrhill to Stranraer, but he's working on a plan to do that another day. Of course the rancid journey on the coach was another big downer, but that was an experience and life lesson! Overall the trip was a massive success and I am adament I will be back up north to do another rover bash like that again asap!

I celebrate with some tunes now, the first since the small hours of Sunday morning. I hope you all enjoy the read, I will reply to comments from earlier in the week tomorrow, when I add photos and videos. In the meantime, bring on the next bash!

Another cracking read Tech, great to meet you as I said :)

A properly successful and enjoyable trip had by all accounts. As far as today goes, can't believe a 350/3 is becoming a Super Dud already, and congrats on clearing the Southern 377s for sight!

I'm sure our paths will cross in future, but until then, looking forward to your next trip reports! Who knows, there might even be one from me after this week ;)

Go enjoy your bed, I'm sure a couple of times in the last couple of days, it must've felt like it was calling your name.

Great write-up! Sounds like an enjoyable 6 days (buses excluded!)

Not too badly priced either, less than £70 on average per day travelling, eating/drinking and sleeping isn't too bad at all.

Bet you already looking forward to the next one!

A fantastic read there Tech! Not much of an LUL fan myself but you kept me entertained nonetheless. And the 150 home must have been a nice way to finish it off!

As 47403 says, rest up for a bit. You deserve it.

I can't get over how many times you've been through and at Wigan North Western.

How did you find Bryn?
Have you scratched off Ince (Manchester) yet? You don't need to, we can pretend you have as it is the dump of Wigan.

I know, it's weird that. I seem to have a habit of doing that with places I've not been to for years!

Bryn I had 90 seconds to change trains, so dived through the crowds and made it to the platform to see a 156 arriving. So what I saw of Bryn was pretty much the roadbridge over the east end of the platforms!

Ince, not yet and I don't think I've ever done a train that calls there!

To answer a previous question, the only 319 working North of Wigan at the moment is the 1800 Liverpool to Preston. The set stables and runs ECS to Wigan the next morning. On a Friday the set stables till Monday.

Nice one! Couldn't remember if there was a 1700 or not as well as 1800, and wasn't sure if it was that anyway.

That'll be why 361 was stabled next to 366 (static training duties isn't it for that one?), the latter was stabled every day of my NW rover.

I was surprised 380 hasn't had a new toilet module yet mind! Hellfire ride between just between St Helens and Garswood on that lengthy section too.

Will be taking advantage of that 1800 from Liverpool for some 319 action next time I'm up there, which will hopefully be on a Lancashire Day Ranger in the near future.

Ouch to the food poisoning!

Security? What security? Granted all I did was change platforms via the bridge, I had no intention of leaving the station in the 10 minutes or so I was there!

You'll have read about the coach journey by now, hope you have fun on the Daytripper. Only £11.50 which is a bargain in my book!

Sounds like a fantastic 4 days in the north west, looking forward to reading about days 5 & 6 :) sounds like we almost crossed paths, I was behind 37603 on the 17:31 off LAN!

Close then, I went past the inbound working which really wasn't helpful! I do still wonder if I could have bailed at Carnforth and still got to Preston in time for my train south. As it was 1744 off Oxenholme it really will have been a bit risky!

Hope you enjoyed the freight loco!

You're a hardy soul, that's for sure.
Congratulations on getting that last pesky 314 in the book.

I would say that's a bit much, but after Saturday night/Sunday morning I would find it tempting!

Hardy, yes, because I'm an honourary Yorkshireman! Even though I was born in Shropshire

That gap with the 314s was incredibly satisfying to get rid of, as was the deleting of the memo file of Required 314s off my phone! Shame I couldn't also do that with the 318s (only need 254) but it could happen next time! Quite, once that's gone I'll probably be having a celebratory cigar!

A busy day in Scotland yesterday :)

Nice to see you again at Sandwell & Dudley

Oh yes indeed, good to bump into you even though only briefly, wouldn't have been right not meeting while you're on my stomping grounds! At least you got a 390 you needed out of it too, one less to go chasing after all!

Sorry I wasn't the most engaging with conversation at points though, I was starting to get tired!

Indeed I am, there's nothing would sound sweeter to my ears.
Enjoy the rest of the trip mate.
happy hunting

Shame I was at the wrong end of the station, didn't expect the signal to clear so quickly so no video clip for you I'm afraid!

I know right about the 350/3, only one more move needed on it now! I was glad I happened to turn my head to the right just at the right time to see a coach number of 70708 (or something close if not) which got me checking the front number which had me going "Ooh, that sounds familiar", imagine the smile on my face when I saw it didn't have a tick next to it!

Bound to cross paths when I'm on a GE again, I need to get the shacks cleared on the Abbey branch as well as the Marston Vale. It'll almost certainly be a Monday, if that helps. I'll of course let you know, maybe pop into somewhere for a proper chat over a pint?

Top effort tech, fortune favoured the brave, plenty winners all round. Cracking read too.
Go enjoy your bed, I'm sure a couple of times in the last couple of days, it must've felt like it was calling your name.

"Fortune favours the brave" is a favourite phrase in such circumstances!

I enjoyed my bed once I got there a little after midnight, ended up staying there (bar a couple of minor interruptions) until just after 12 noon!

I must admit, while we were waiting at Johnstone and then at Prestwick International Airport (the station of course, still need the airport), the bed felt like millions of miles away. Home felt like it would be days away, but after eating things were a lot better!

Great write-up! Sounds like an enjoyable 6 days (buses excluded!)

Not too badly priced either, less than £70 on average per day travelling, eating/drinking and sleeping isn't too bad at all.

Bet you already looking forward to the next one!

I don't do buses all the time, for fun anyway, but on occasions I do love a day on buses, especially with company. I feel a trip down Memory Lane, a reminder of old times, is needed with a Stagecoach Explorer bash to Swindon. Blindtraveller, if you read this bit, I'll let you know what's going on there.

If I'm careful tomorrow and Thursday, I'll be only on a £15 overspend over my budget this week, which is exceptional.

I am of course looking forward to the next trip, I always do. It's been nice to have a day at home to recover, I wouldn't have coped with going to work today! I'm still a long way behind with a week's worth of forum'ing to catch up on!

A fantastic read there Tech! Not much of an LUL fan myself but you kept me entertained nonetheless. And the 150 home must have been a nice way to finish it off!

As 47403 says, rest up for a bit. You deserve it.

You don't know what you're missing! I recently discovered how fun the Jubilee line lot is, I must get on with making an effort on using it more!

That 150 was a lovely bonus, it must be said, I do enjoy a good bit of 150 action!

I would say that's a bit much, but after Saturday night/Sunday morning I would find it tempting!

Yeah, on reflection it's probably not a good idea. My glasses would fall off.

I can appreciate that.
I have a similar file on my phone named "DMUs required for sight".
It currently reads: 171727
I'm looking forward to deleting it :)

Sorry for the long post before, lots of comments to reply to!

Here are the promised video clips:

https://youtu.be/7az9Ke1umHk - 37409 departing Wigton (from on board)

https://youtu.be/_WlZUOQyz_s - 37402 departing Dalston

https://youtu.be/BOOVIRr18Ds - 37402 departing Carnforth (thumbnails weren't showing here so hopefully they're now working!)

Photos have yet to be uploaded, but I'm working on those! Not many of them, so I hope to have them uploaded and linked to on here soon. I don't know how to embed videos on here.

Quite a downside! I wouldn't go for it either, if only because I'd have nowhere to store a pen for quick access!

I can appreciate that.

My only DMUs to get for sight are 168/3s when they come onto the scene and the 171s created from 170/4s. Oh and 150926.
