Good write-up once again. These little extensions must be a little annoyance to the serious basher though I imagine, but they keep it fresh and on your toes I suppose!

They are annoying, but not so bad when it's relatively local. Nice scenery in the Valleys too which helps!

That looks to be a different sort of day out - and a sensible saving of funds.

I quite like long distance bus trips - and the various day rover tickets can be excellent value.

I'm semi-seriously contemplating a return trip from Rochdale to Seahouses (Northumberland) via the following routes:
Out - Rochdale - Halifax - Leeds - Whitby - Guisborough - Middlesbrough - Newcastle - Seahouses
Return - Seahouses - Newcastle - Carlisle - Keswick - Lancaster - Preston - Bolton - Rochdale

Both come to about £23/24 for the day - walk up. Return train tickets to Berwick are about £90 (so might as well get a 4-in-8 NE rover...

Quite a long trip by bus that, but the difference in price is enormous! You do get the benefit of seeing different parts of the country too which is nice. I must admit I enjoyed bus rides when they featured hellfire vehicles, favourites being Volvo Olympians and step-entrance Darts. Marshall Darts were also beasts too, and the Mini-Mercs were funky. These days a Trident is almost heritage and worth changing plans for, not something I'd have said 10 years ago when London was dominated by the type!

Volvo B10M coaches too, oh yes the X4 was so much more fun and comfortable with those! Nostalgia...

Another good read Tech! I guess new bits of lines and stations added to the network keeps things interesting. Can't say I'm a bus person myself - my 15 minute daily commute and the odd 20 minute run to Crewe station is more than enough for me!

Best of luck with the new eating and drinking regime. Is your squash sugar-free? Some sweeteners have laxative effects - hence the bladder issues! Or it could just be you're drinking a healthy amount of water! :)

Absolutely, indeed in the next couple of weeks I shall be after some more winner track too!

Normally my commute to/from work by bus (I spent near enough 2 hours a day on them) has me bored of buses but now and again I do enjoy a decent ride on them, depends what I'm travelling on. I certainly do enjoy some nostalgia too sometimes!

Thanks, I'm working on it all slowly, certainly a lot easier to drink healthily than eat healthily! All in good time though, a lot of mind over matter required! :)

Aye the Robinsons orange squash I had is indeed no added sugar. I never knew some sweeteners have laxative effects, learn something new every day! Got to admit it's no fun drinking water and squash all the time, although I've been enjoying some Dr Pepper at home yesterday and tonight, too much of a shock to the system otherwise!

Great stuff Tech :) can't blame you for the healthy diet, doing the same myself at the moment. It's just too easy to gain weight eating calorific train station food!

Same here

Why else would I walk/ride miles between stations if it wasn't in an attempt to keep fit?

Very true regarding food on stations, I'm certainly not eating healthy tonight with a doughnut and 2 iced buns. To be fair I did go nearly 10 hours between meals today!

Ladies and gentlemen, don't forget Wednesday is day 1 of the 6 day monster bash! Hashtag if you haven't noticed yet is #10thbasherversary with tweets to begin around 0715. Photos will be shared during the trip on Twitter, which may or may not make it to this trip report, so that might be an incentive to get on there this week!

The bag is packed as of yesterday evening, that's how keen I am to get going! The first part of the trip report is already prepared, and final prep will be done tomorrow after work. An 0630 alarm will also be set and I fully expect to be flying out of bed on Wednesday morning! A few bits and bobs to do later, such as directions to the various base camps and leaving some rough details for my Mum's benefit of my trip, but otherwise all is pretty much ready. Some supplies like drinks and foodstuffs to be sourced after work tomorrow, then it'll just be a case of de-rancifying, triple checking everything and trying to get some decent sleep, ahead of a long and busy day on Wednesday!

It's going to be an absolute monster of a bash, so expect a lot to read in the trip report as the week goes on! Excitement levels are almost at the fever pitch stage, I'm really not going to want to do much work tomorrow!

Day 1's trip report will go live on here around 2130 at a guess on Wednesday, with the rest of it when time permits.

I'm sure that you will have a fantastic time with six days of almost non-stop cranking. We're all sitting here with baited breath wondering what antics you'll be getting up to while on your travels. I'm sure that you'll be grabbing numerous new shacks and/or scoring winners by yer bagload! Roll on Wednesday morning.

I hope Techniquest doesn't get bowled out at Birmingham then. :)

Mind you, if the Halton Curve is on the agenda, at least one RUN willbe scored. ..

*groans, but laughing myself silly too!*

I can't comment on cricket, I was watching the last couple of hours of The Open golf the other week! Mind you I do prefer cricket out of the two. Not that I'll be watching, far too much to do!

Work is about to start today, going to be tough to carry out the usual graft as Holiday Mode has landed! Still, it'll have to be done to help keep the country moving.

Also, torn between following the bash live as it happens and the cricket? Type the hashtag into the search box on Twitter and it should bring up all the tweets I've used it in!

Day 1 is already over :( Photos and videos I'm going to try and deal with on Tuesday, when I'm recovering from the massive trip. Here is how Day 1 went:

29/07/15 - Tech's 10th Basherversary, Day 1

Yeehaa, it's finally here after just over 2 months of waiting, the epic 6 day celebratory bash! It feels like forever since my last major bash [Tech's Capital Bash, 26-28th March - Ed], same for the Ebbw Vale Town bash just over 2 weeks ago! So what's this one about? I've mentioned it more than a couple of times in this trip report thread, but it's 10 years this summer [I don't have an exact date for it sadly, I never used to record such landmark events - Ed] since I graduated from being a mere spotter to being a basher. For those of you who haven't made that step yet, it's a big change to the hobby but so much more fun! I'm sure the other bashers of this forum will agree with me on that. Originally I had only booked a day trip to Glasgow via an overnight National Express coach, returning south to London on the Cally Insomnie [that's all coming up at the end of Day 4 until the beginning of Day 6 - Ed]. However I wanted some bigger trips again and managed to get most of the week off work, and after some consultation of the Plans for 2015 notes I made in December 2014, I settled with a North West 4 in 8 Rover. There's just so much to do up there, trains and shacks wise, that 4 days will not even get me close to done. However I'll be making rather good progress! The main batch of Advances were booked by late May, same for the hotels.

After sourcing my North West Rover on 20th July, a travelcard for Day 6 and a SPT Daytripper for Day 5 was all that was left to pay for, well and spending money when I'm away of course. The latter is what will hit my wallet hardest I reckon, after all on full days out it isn't hard for me to spend 30+ quid, and that's still being tight-fisted! This time though I have collected quite a fair bit of Costa Coffed Club points [836 at least - Ed], ready for such a trip. My healthy drinking is still going OK [see the Ebbw Vale Town trip report for details - Ed],with a huge decrease in my pop consumption, but I am struggling with eating healthily. Mind over matter, I keep telling myself, but it takes a long time to re-program the brain! Nevertheless there's still progress and by 20th July 2016 I should have hit the goal of being down to 14 stone in mass. Anyway, enough about that, let's talk about the trip now!

Less sleep than desired, what with getting up at 0535 due to a demand for feeding from the stomach, and it's Weetabix and coffee before final prep is done [the bulk of the prep done two days early! - Ed], and l get the early bus to town, enlisting the help of an Aldi bag for my food and drink as the holdall is ridiculously full and heavy! The usual Costa stop is up first, and I position myself ready for the first of many moves, the 0908 to Manchester Piccadilly [0615 from Carmarthen - Ed], which today falls to 175006. With all my commuting logs already up to date, all that's left to do is sit back and enjoy the journey with a read of the current edition of RAIL. I do that until the Wilmslow area, learning of WCML disruption due to a fatality this morning. Arrival is at 1112 and I only just make it to platform 14 for the 1116 to Glasgow Central. Bonus is that it's winner 350401, although it had been tough flagging winner 390130! The school holidays have been tons of families disrupting the boarding and seat finding, but luckily I get a table seat from Oxford Road and the man for Wigan swapped seats with me, gracefully allowing me to use the power socket. The plan at this time is to go to Lockerbie on this one, although if there's a good connection for Windermere available I might take that instead yet. Either way, it's a long journey ahead! I see winner 319365 at Wigan too late to jump off for a shack attack at Bryn, never mind, back to the plan!

It's now lunch time [well, about 10 minutes early! - Ed] and now I have a bit of room to spread out I get my lunchbox out. 4 Bavarian ham rolls later, I'm feeling much better and should easily get to tea time before any more food. Granted I did also devour two packets of crisps on the 175 mind! I could do with a coffee now mind, it's been about 4 hours now since my Costa coffee! My last 350/4, and last one out of all the sub-classes for sight, 350408 was noted between Wigan and Preston, excellent! Time for the first tunes in 4 hours now, and it's Dragonforce's Fury of the Storm as we pelt it up the WCML between Preston and Lancaster. Signal, especially mobile data, is awful in this area which I'd forgotten! The connection at Oxenholme was terrible so staying on to Lockerbie. Hoping like mad there's a conveniently placed Costa near the station, and that the rain holds off, I'm more than keen to get some caffeine in me and have a good little walkabout. Mind you I'm also hoping to get some 68s I need for sight on Kingmoor too, it's been a long time since I last did a train up this way! I was too busy gassing to some new passengers at my table to really note much on Kingmoor, oops. After 2 hours and 20 minutes on the 350 I was glad to have a break, mind you to do Hereford to Lockerbie in exactly 4 and a half hours is not bad. No Costa in Lockerbie, so I make my way to the large Tesco 5 minutes walk away and get a can of Monster Khaos [my favourite Monster - Ed] in.

Back to the station and after a short fester I score winner 350407 for the journey to my second winner shack of the day, Penrith. Of course, for the time being it's renamed Kenrith until Kendal Festival is over! I still couldn't quite identify the 68 on Kingmoor for sure, it looked like 68001 but not counting a "could be". I see 66426 and 66428 which were my last two DRS 66s to see once upon a time. 66952 was noted earlier, so close to 66953 but oh so far away! 37401 and 37402 were top and tailing a train in platform 1 at Carlisle as we were there, and 142067 was in platform 2. 37402 is required, and it's due to come back up later. I'm definitely going after that then! The second shack score of the day done at Penrith, I have 40 minutes or so here so I go to McDonalds next door for a coffee, in a bid to start collecting again for a free coffee, following losing my last full card. I received gen earlier that the 1230 Euston to Glasgow is to have winner 390118 on it, so it's time to plonk myself onto the bench and slowly drink my coffee. The plan now is to head to base camp, today that's Townhouse B&B in Carlisle, dump stuff off then go 37 bashing. I also need to factor in my evening meal yet, but that can be done later. Winner 390118 did produce as my source said, so just 4 more 390s to go! It's a short 10 minute walk to base camp, with a light rain being the first I've had to deal with today. After a short break, I get back to the station at 1640.

Nothing of interest for ages, so after getting a copy of the timetable for the Cumbrian Coast I end up in The William Rufus (Lloyds/Spoons) for an early fish and chips tea. £6.25 on the afternoon deal, which finished at 1700 so I was close to missing it, and my pint [Ringwood's Old Thumper - Ed] went down beautifully! Back to the station with a 3 minute walk and I turn down a winner 156, in anticipation of a 37 on the 1737 to Barrow-in-Furness. Thankfully it is 37s, and it's winner 37409 to lead us out of Carlisle! I haven't had a 37 on a service train since September 2009 [37670 and 37401 Bristol to Weymouth - Ed] much less a winner! It's fired up soon after I get on and my jaw dropped! Off I go for my planned shack attack at Aspatria, and I eventually find an open window [bars on the windows, so no dangerous heads-out! - Ed] and the noise is awesome! Oh I've missed that sound fair play! Of course there's plenty of photos and some video clips, which I'll hopefully have sorted out on Tuesday when I next get access to a laptop. I had planned to get the 1835 back towards Carlisle, but the timetable suggested it would be better to do the 1842 to Harrington for a +22 onto what should be 37402 leading the 1731 Barrow to Carlisle. Just as well, as the 1835 was dud 156461 and the 1842 winner 156481! 8 more Heaton 156s [13 Northern 156s when including Allerton's lot - Ed] to go then, excellent! 5 winners so far today, out of 6 trains that I've been on, rather pleased!

Harrington marks shack score number 4, and the rain attempts to make it a bad fester, but once 37402 comes around the noise brings beaming smiles to my face again! The second winner 37 today, which in 2015 is unbelieveable. All DRS' 37/4s are now dud for me, although I still need Colas' 37421 at least. At Wigton I decide to get ready to alight, so stand by the droplight. Oh yes, oh yes indeed, that noise is awesome. The muck smell outside however is not! Dalston has a 10 minute fester [which turned into 20 minutes due to delays - Ed] for 156481 coming back so I went for shack score number 5! Upon arrival I head back to base camp after nearly 12 hours of bashing. Granted there was a nice break in the middle for tea and base camp check in, but I've been up for over 15.5 hours by now so ready to shut off for the night. Alarm set for 0630 ready for breakfast and de-rancification, then to meet Blindtraveller at the station. Brilliant first day, hope the next 5 are just as good and bring on Day 2!

Youve been wanting those 37s so badly ever since I wrote about them in May havnt you? Real shame its such a treck for you to get them!

NRE suggests fastest HFD>LOC journey at vertually any time of day as 5, to 5.5hrs, just shows what can be done if unrestricted and on a mition. Quite why anyone would be on a mition to go to LOC is beyond me but glad you got it and without a truly gastly fester, something thats not often doable sadly given its the only mainline station in Dumfries and Galloway - it has a really bad service.

Looking forward to our little trip out on the trains tomorrow, unfortunate that it must start with a Vommiter.

2 comments on your refreshment stops - no matter how desperate I am, McDonalds coffee is something to be avoided so your a brave man. A beer named thumper should be sold on an enthusiasts day out on vintage DEMUs, surely?

Sounds like a busy day, the Tesco & McDonalds is something to bare in mind if I have a fester at either Lockerbie or Penrith :)

Although I was following this all day, it's great to have a fleshed out "travelogue" as an evening read :) only thing that's missing tonight is a cuppa... Must get that VT mug in the dishwasher!

Would love some 37s as you know. Interesting to hear you can't stick your head out any more... Not that I ever would ;)

Have a cracking one tomorrow, and hopefully catch you for 5 minutes on Monday...

Cracking read so far mate, hit lucky with the 37's, knackered DBSO meant you got the top n tailed version. 37401 certainly caused a stir, pics all over social media. Few winners on the day too, hope your luck continues for the duration of the mega bash.
Happy hunting.

Thanks for all the comments all! Glad to have provided another good read :-

Day 2 had some major issues, but for the main part it went well. See for yourself below:

30/07/2015 - Tech's 10th Basherversary, Day 2

After being disturbed in the middle of the night by a nightmare, the sleep was otherwise good and heavy. 0630 arrived before I knew it, and it's de-rancification time. Feeling much better after that, I enjoy a good breakfast before leaving for the station. My stay at Townhouse B&B has been good, with a comfortable bed, good range of channels on TV, decent kettle with a good supply of tea and coffee and a good size room. The only downside was the shared bathroom, which I hadn't noticed when I booked it. Still, it was OK in this case so no complaints. After the travel mug is filled, it's off to the station to meet Blindtraveller off his train, before we join the 0849 to Euston, as far as Preston. He arrives off a pair of Voyagers [poor boy! - Ed] and we have a natter over a coffee. Dud 390011 takes me for a good social journey to Preston, and thanks to running a few minutes early the connection over to the 1004 from Preston was easy. 37402 is sounding awesome again on this, and after a false start we leave two minutes late. The thrash up the WCML was most enjoyable and before we know it we're in Carnforth, today's first shack score. It had by now been arranged to meet crehld while we were in the area and he was available, so after a short fester we join winner 150218 on the 1034 Morecambe to Leeds. Winner shack number 2 today is at Bentham where we part ways again.

It was good to finally meet you crehld, next time it'll be for longer hopefully! We then get Super Dud 150214 back to Carnforth, where we were waiting for a 156 on TPX duties. Winner 156479 turns up, wasn't expecting a Heaton machine! Absolutely rammed and a pram blocked up the connection to the other coach, really helpful. We choose to bail at Lancaster for a coffee break so I get myself the usual coffee. 856 points now, getting on well! I ask my source for some 390 gen, only 390016 is gettable today. So we have quite a while to wait for it here, so we get in touch with my base camp for tonight, Royal Arms Hotel in Lancaster. My room is ready to be checked into, so off I go to dump stuff off. Quite a nice room, decor is in need of an update but otherwise for £39.56 [I used a 10% off voucher from Hotels.com for this stay, hence the unusual price - Ed] it's a really good size en-suite room with free WiFi. Breakfast is included too, and the bed felt comfortable enough for my liking. More comments on those in Day 3's trip report! From the room to platform 4 at Lancaster was just 5 minutes walk, most handy that. During the continued fester for 390016 we learn of an incident at Leyland which was causing disruption. Finally it's time for the 1200 Glasgow to Euston to arrive, and most disappointingly 390020 is on it instead! On we go anyway to Preston, when we learn it's a fatality at Leyland so major disruptions are occuring.

There was also a report of one in the Glasgow area, maybe why 390016 didn't produce? Blindtraveller needs to get to Blackpool soon, and the next one is the 1433 to Blackpool South. When we get to platform 1 it's changed to platform 3 irritatingly, but good news in that it's winner 142044! We however are awaiting a driver, and the service is cut back to St Annes. After a while the entire service is cancelled, much to our dismay. So we wait for a train to Blackpool North, but the 1533 to South turns up next and is winner 142061 of Newton Heath fame, so we take that instead. Thankfully we leave this time, with consideration of putting in a Delay Repay claim once the trip is over. Any thoughts on whether this is viable at all gang? We go all the way to the end of the line, where I leave Blindtraveller with a short wait for his taxi and I rejoin 142061. On the way out of South it occurs to me that Salwick should be receiving a call soon, so I check RTT and the 1620 Blackpool South to Colne does call there. There's about an hour to wait for the last westbound train from there, but as I'm behind with my trip report [last updated at Carlisle! - Ed] I crack on with that. Which takes up the first 30 minutes of the fester which is good news! By now it's 4 hours since lunch was had in Lancaster [my many thanks to Blindtraveller's wife for preparing that for us! - Ed] so the stomach's getting ready for food now.

As it's Thursday it's Curry Club in Spoons tonight, so the plan is to do that somewhere soon. Which Spoons I'll do is as yet undecided mind, but if the times work out right then it'll be in Lancaster. I get my Spoons Directory out and see there's one in St Annes and one in Lytham, that'll be more convenient so I settle for the St Annes one as it appears to only be about a 5 minutes walk from the station according to the Pubfinder app. Dud 142053 is up to take me to St Annes on the Sea, it now joining the League of Super Duds. I get a little lost finding Spoons so ask in the Travelodge where it is. Turns out I turned right instead of left somewhere! An awesome chicken korma meal and pint were had for a bargain £6.15 and was simply amazing! Back at the station I have time to spare so do a minor supply raid at the Sainsburys next door. I claw back earlier's winner loss with 142044 for a leap to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, shack score number 5 today. It's not long before it's back and joins the Super Dud Club. It's an enormous crowd for the return journey, going to be right fun! With no access to the other end of the coach, it was certainly uncomfortable! I have a lengthy wait at Preston for the next train to Lancaster, so when I see the 2000 Blackpool North to Liverpool Lime Street roll in with winner 150215 on the front, and dud 156491 on the rear, I run over to join it for a leap to Leyland, and I see here I would have had dud 390001 if I'd not come here. 6 shack scores so far today with 5 winners now too.

Up next is a trip with a +8 to Buckshaw Parkway. My powerbank is more than needed now as I was down to 11% charge! Winner 150270 is leading dud 150148, another Newton Heath 150 down! Now on 7 shack scores and 6 winners, not bad at all. My luck doesn't continue now with the winners, as it's 150201 taking me back to Preston, yet another Northern DMU joining the League of Super Duds [you may notice I occasionally switch between that and The Super Dud Club, but both are the same thing - Ed], and excellent memory readers will remember my trip to Buxton with this on one engine, then joining with a 156 also on one engine on the way to Preston. I doubt I need to tell you that was a slow journey on 2 out of 4 engines on a hilly route! There's still a fair ol' wait at Preston for my next train, but considering I'd have only got to Lancaster at around 2110 with the delayed trains from London and now due at 2156, I'm sure you'll agree it was worth getting back nearly 40 minutes later! Down to 24 150s to get now, 19 of which are Newton Heath ones. Slowly I'm getting there! 185127 is dud on the 2147 to Barrow so I revert back to the plan to do the 2143 from Preston for the final leg of the day to Lancaster. I have of course got my fingers crossed for a winner but I have severe doubts on that!

A correct assumption a dud 'un would produce, 390157 is in charge of taking me back to Lancaster. I see 319365 was still sat around north of the station when we head north, it was there too at 2008 when I came in from Blackpool, does anyone know what it worked up to Preston? Would be awesome to get some WCML 319 action in! Back at base camp, I get in touch with home, then chill for the night once bag prep is done. De-rancification in the morning, after the 0730 alarm.

And that was Day 2. Only 4 to go already, it's going far too fast!

Nice to know how much of an impact you made on the South Branch shacks. Like me youl now be just a bit sick of Preston? Grand evening had by the sounds of it and good move avoiding that 185!
Thanks for your company.

Another good read. I heard on Twitter about the Leyland fatality. One of my friends knew the driver of the train - so thoughts out to them tonight.

Hope Day 3 has fewer delays for you; although you don't seem to have been unduly affected by them.

Nicely done on the winners today, and sounds like a good time socialising with fellow bashers :)

The only mistake was going for a korma instead of the Fire Dragon at Spoons! ;)
