Well done on hammering the DLR shacks! You put me to shame as I need most of the Beckton branch, all of Woolwich (including the track) and other random shacks. I'm doing better with only 9 units needed although nearly all are yet to achieve the coveted 10 mile status. However, with my son now living out in DLR land, that'll provide me with excuses to go bashing the DLR when I am visiting - you even visited his home shack on your trip. Looking forward to your next write up .....

Shame on you indeed, as it's fairly local!

Clearing anything for 10 miles on the DLR would take quite some time, with so many short mileage journeys.

I can't wait for my next trip, a week on Monday. 6 day week of work coming up next week so it'll be a well earnt trip!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I've booked myself a night in the Ibis Budget in Birmingham, after much looking at different places but settling with somewhere I knew for a rate that was most acceptable. This is ready for my Great Escape bash, a week on Monday! :D

Not going to be a cheap bash whatsoever, will be £62.50 all in for the hotel and two Great Escapes but it has to be done. The name of the game is to hunt the 8 350/3s I need, not so bothered about shack scratching this time, even though I need several on the Marston Vale and St Albans Abbey line, plus Hartford. The other two (Polesworth and Bordesley) on the LM empire that I need are almost completely inaccessible normally, and certainly not available to do on this trip. Maybe next time I'll make an effort to get them in, we'll see how things go!

Hashtag and trip title are TBA, as I haven't yet decided what they'll be. I'm awaiting inspiration to strike on a commute to/from work in the meantime, obviously I'll post the hashtag on here for the tweeters amongst us all.

In other news, photos are uploaded from the London trip, but as Virgin Media are still screwing us over with a terrible broadband connection it's taken forever to get Flickr to load. Put it this way, it's slower than dial-up ever was here! However I'm slowly adding them into the trip report now, so feel free to return to it and have a look :)

Not quite sure how you'll achieve Polesworth without a car but good luck - I'm very fond of the LM Trent Valley service. Entertaining read as ever

Bordesley will be a lot easier than Polesworth as Moor Street is about a 20 minute walk from Bordesley. All you need is a free Saturday!

Oh I know, and we had a good deal lined up with them. I suppose it helped we've been landline customers with them for a long time! Only problem? Virgin wouldn't send us a MAC code despite assurances that they had sent it, I was promised on the phone when they rang me back several days after my complaint last time it had been sent. BT gave up waiting for the code and we lost the deal, thanks to Virgin Media!

Eventually the service improved somewhat, returning to an average of 3.5MB/s which for our area is not bad. When I last looked, it had dropped to an average of 400megabits/s, and our connection is about as useable as it was on dial-up! Not that Virgin think there's a problem there at all...

Going to try speaking to them myself on the phone on Tuesday morning, when the offices will be open again. I can't do any of the stuff I need to use the Internet for (photos and videos), using mobile data on my phone to access the forum!

In case it's not clear, I'm not happy with my broadband connection whatsoever! Once it gets sorted, I will be much more productive than I have been lately, plenty more photos to come and hopefully in the coming months I'm going to have a lot more productions made and uploaded on YouTube. Only taken me 8 and more years to get some of it done...

Polesworth, plan is to do the only train of the day on a weekday at some point, then head onwards by bus to Tamworth. I did have a plan formulated once for it, would need to research that again.

I think, certainly as of last Autumn that bus still runs. Re BT, I'd like to help if I can, do let me know. Having a quick look you should get around 5 or 6 meg with them. Virgin cannot stop you leaving but on Tuesday, threaten them with reporting them to Ofcom and they will start to play ball.

That trip sounds exhausting (but equally productive). Looking forward to the pics as and when.

The limited range of photos I took on Techniquest's Capital Bash have been added to the relevant parts of the trip report. I barely took my phone out to snap anything, I was just too busy to keep taking photos!

Planning moves for next week's Great Escape, and I think I've got most of the key moves already planned. Quite, I may not need to do another Great Escape to do 350/3s, but I'll discuss that during the next trip report or some time afterwards, depending how I get on. Let's just say I'm not going to get bored on a WMDR any time soon...

Yes, another enjoyable read Mr Quest, it's been far too long, since I whizzed around London, I used to go at least once a year, mainly for gigs and stay at a friends in Catford, whilst he was at work, he'd normally drop me off at Catford or Lewisham on his way to work and I'd have a day whizzing round the Capital on an all zones Capital Card, trying to cram in as much as possible before returning back to Catford, going to the gig and returning home the next day.
The DLR always reminds me of the taxi's on the film Total Recall, dunno why, probably just me.
Plenty winners all round, even a plane.:o

Shame that plane wasn't doable, need it for fly-age, if that's even an acceptable term!

Hashtag for Monday's Great Escape has been announced this morning on Twitter. It will be #techsaspaceman. As is usually the case, tweets will start by 0630 on Monday. The hashtag signals a return to pop culture references, although this one is a little obscure, it's inspired by Pixie Lott's Kiss The Stars. 350s just sound too much like UFOs with the noise the motors make (not that I know what a UFO sounds like!) and I reference one line in the song. Not that I can remember the specific wording right now, but as the trip is to get in as many 350/3s as possible, out of the 8 of them I need, it just seemed like a perfect fit!

In other news, I've got the next trip booked already! I was in a heavy TPP session last night, following some calculations, and eventually settled on a mini day trip to Liverpool. Mini as I'll only have 3.5 hours to do any bashing, but all being well I should have some more shacks cleared, with the potential to get my last 3 507s and last 508 in the book too. Having not been since 14th July I'm more than overdue to return to Merseyside!

Yes I know I've not planned to do any of Northern's 319s when up there, but that can now wait until the Lime Street to Wigan NW services go over to 319s. Yep, I do intend to return to Merseyside later this year!

Other than that, a much more local trip is due the week after that, a West Midlands Daytripper. Not done one since January 5th, well overdue to go again! That one's still TBC, I might have another plan up my sleeve yet!

Looks like I'd best start doing some more overtime...!

St Helens Central is one I know for sure. There's one near Hunts Cross, Cressington I believe too. Other than that, the rest are between Sandhills and Southport, but I need to refer to my Baker to check those.

I have severe doubts as to getting all the MerseyRail ones done on this trip to Liverpool, but I'll see. Thank the good Lord for trains every 15 minutes between Southport and Hunts Cross!

Are you aware of a solitary tram working along Southport Pier? Not in any spotter books as far as i know. But it's fun to do if you are in the area.
Just a short walk from the station.

Near Hunts Cross I am guessing Halewood. Just by the first house I ever lived in. Cressington is a very nice station, and a nice area, just down the road from where I live now.

Halewood is done, must have been Cressington I was thinking of for 'near Hunts Cross'.

Aye I keep forgetting about the Southport Pier tramway, despite it being in my Baker! One day I'll be up there to do it, probably as part of a Lancashire Day Ranger trip.

Almost all prepped for tomorrow now, the usual last minute stuff like packing chargers, de-rancification etc is all that remains. 15 hours until the alarm goes off, bring on the adventure! :D

Thanks! I'm really hoping it's a good one, but there's only one way to find out. I've printed off the LM 350/3 diagrams to refer to tomorrow, I shall of course be reporting back as to how valid they are.

I've just booked my next major trip. Took longer than I thought, as I had found a guest house in Hastings for a reasonable rate, but then discovered I'd have to suffer lengthy rail replacement buses in each direction to get there, which I really didn't fancy doing!

So I thankfully had a free cancellation, and booked a more expensive (by £12) night in Hove. Breakfast included and I've stayed there before and really enjoyed the stay, so going back there!

In case you've not guessed, I'm finally off to do a DaySave this year! I'm going via New Street and London, and Virgin were to get £13 of my money for an Advance to Euston. Only thing is, they were reserving me in Coach H. No 390 has a Coach H in Standard Class, so I'm having to assume it's booked for a pair of Voyagers. No thanks, I'd rather spend £5 less, having more than 13 minutes to change trains at New Street and take an 1 hour and 18 minutes longer to go there with LM!

Plan of attack is to clear out the last two shacks I need on the Brighton Main Line (outside of the zones anyway), and get some more 313/2s in while hopefully scoring more shacks and 377s. Then spend as much time doing so as I can on the Monday before returning home. Not booked that Advance yet mind, got to do some more calculations to ensure I can afford to book that before payday! Plenty of time yet, mid-May's still some way off!

Morning all :D

I've already started the trip report on the way to town for #techsaspaceman, just the backstory part obviously but at least I've got started on it now! More to come tonight or tomorrow evening, once the trip is done, but in the meantime here we go:

13/04/2015 - Tech's A Space Man, Day 1

After what felt like a long 15 days since I got back from my last trip, this one was finally here! It was sure be well earned after a tough couple of weeks at work, especially during last week's heatwave! 0600 and the alarm's going off, thankfully since everything but filling the travel mug with coffee was prepared last night, I have plenty of time for breakfast before leaving the house for the first bus of the day to town. The usual stallion is on it today, and BRRRRR! It's mighty cold this morning, bring back last week's heatwave! The coffee is soon on the case and bringing the heat thankfully. I start writing the trip report during the journey, and I can't help wonder which 170 I'll get later. Yesterday I filled in the memo file on my phone with the mileages on LM's 170s [as well as 175s for next week's trip to Liverpool - Ed], which was an eyeopener as it showed I've barely any logged mileage on 170504! Surely that's wrong, I must be missing a truckload of moves. Yes I STILL haven't gone through each and every notebook I have yet to make sure it's all correct! [Come to think of it, I still haven't checked if I have my Highland Chieftain moves logged yet! - Ed] I keep putting that off to be done another day, same with getting my moves book up to date, but let's not go there!

So what's this trip report title about? No I'm not going to outer space, it's a return to pop culture references. On this occasion it's a slightly obscure one, taken from one line ("You're my space man" to be exact) in Pixie Lott's Kiss The Stars. As I'm on mostly 350s all day today, and they sound a lot like futuristic spaceships [well, it's well known how imaginative I can be! - Ed] it made sense. The name of the game today is to hunt down the 8 350/3s that I need, and any shacks that I can while I'm at it of course, although that can wait for the next couple of Great Escape trips too. I already know it's exceptionally unlikely all 8 of them [I need all of them except 350368 and 350375 - Ed], but it sure would be nice if I can, as it will clear the entire LM fleet, something I've wanted to do for a rather long time! There are still 9 350/4s to get too [I need all but 350406 there - Ed] but that's already on my hitlist for later this year, when I make the long-awaited multi-day trip to the North West. Much to my surprise, writing this up has taken me a long way into the journey into town, excellent! I've also seen that I will need to visit Morrisons for supplies after all, something I wanted to avoid [I've grown tired of that shop! - Ed], I knew I should have sourced the lot after work on Saturday!

Which 170 will I get? Will it be 170504 and change the embarassingly low amount of mileage off it? Will I enjoy some DBT, and will Morrisons annoy me on my supply raid? Keep it tuned to this thread for the answers to these and many more questions!

You could always have been referring to Babilon Zoo's Spaceman for a bit of 90s Retroism (is that even a word)? I never really use Morrisons with the acception of there own brand senior catfood. Looking forward to this trip report and hope you score your 350s!

Well here we go gang, as I had the chance to type today's trip report as I went today, via several memo files, on my phone I can post it now! Photos to come tomorrow, as of course will tomorrow morning's action.

13th April 2015 CONTINUED!

First things first when I get to town,a supply raid at Morrisons. Meal deal, pop and everything else sourced, it's off to the station to get my Great Escape tickets for today and tomorrow [I'm only going one way from New Street to Hereford on it tomorrow, but 70p or so saving this way. It all counts! - Ed], which takes longer than I would have expected, good thing I have plenty of time then! I see 4 coaches dumped in a siding north of the station, why they're there I have no idea. I also note that construction on the new Hereford City Link Road is finally due to start this spring, about time that was done! That will help alleviate some of the traffic problems in town hopefully when it's done. Today's 0849 Hereford to Birmingham New Street falls to 170517 and 153375, which will put me a little over halfway to clearing the 170 for the magical thou by the time I get to Birmingham!

Dumped coaches at Hereford by 43002, on Flickr

I have no such gen on the 153, for some reason I never created a memo file for the LM 153s. That will have to be created for my next Midlands trip, or at least started on this one. Of course, I'm partaking in some DBT this morning, especially now that, once the electrification of the Walsall to Rugeley Trent Valley line is complete in 2017, the 150s and 153s with LM will be cascaded to another TOC. I enjoy DBT normally anyway, but definitely taking advantage of it while it lasts! Of course, it's still unknown what EMUs LM will get for the Chase Valley, but there's still 18 months to 2 years to go yet until we find out.

It's time before owt else to update the commuting logs, and I then open my first can of Monster. Two of these were sourced for today's bash, which will save money on Costa moves today at least! More of the trip report is then typed up, then time to re-examine the 350/3 diagrams I printed off yesterday, and I'm still in two minds as to whether I'll bail at University for a Starship to Lichfield Trent Valley, where I've a +6 onto the 1002 Crewe to London Euston, a service booked to be formed of a 350/3. Plenty of time to decide yet, as we're cruising through Colwall Tunnel at the time of that thought! If I stick with the plan to go to New Street I've got far safer connections onto the 1002 from Crewe. Studying the timetable for moves is the first priority, and I've got the first few imprinted into memory at least now.By Bromsgrove I've decided I will go for the +6 at Lichfield Trent Valley, it's been way too long since my last long run on a Starship! I found an armrest hiding on the luggage rack above my seat this morning, and as my book was also in the photo I shared everyone seemed to miss the point I was making! Rather nippy here, could do with thermals today! Super Dud 323243 is next, and running about 4 minutes late, putting my +6 into serious jeopardy, maybe I should bail at New Street and go for the safer option!

323243 at Lichfield Trent Valley (High Level) by 43002, on Flickr

A good run is had after all and we arrive 3 minutes early. A nice easy connection down to platform 2 is made and it's slightly warmer here. I watch a few 390s fly through, and the tilt on northbound trains is especially awesome looking! As diagrammed, the 1002 Crewe to London Euston produces a 350/3, today it's 350371 and a winner, fantastic! 7 more to go, and I see 350374 working the 0946 London Euston to Crewe, will definitely be going after that later! Phone goes on charge as the priority as I'm already down to 60% charge [from 100% at 0600! - Ed]. Off to MKC I go now, with a +5 onto the 1146 Euston to Crewe back to Rugby, so I can view what's on the 1102 Crewe to Euston. It's time for the second can of Monster now, which should deal with the caffeine requirements for today. I'm already predicting a celebratory beer later, fingers crossed the Gods of LM stay kind to me! An uneventful run to MKC saw me gain 29% charge into my phone, and no doubt a good few miles as well! 350118 is on the 1146 Euston to Crewe, and this run back to Rugby makes it a Super Dud. I've got my fingers crossed for the 1102 Crewe to Euston now!

Winner winner chicken dinner, it's 350370, excellent as that bring my LM requirements down to just 6 350/3s now! :D My ham and cheese sandwich is devoured on the way back to MKC, which leaves me feeling much more refreshed and ready to carry on! The 1246 Euston to Crewe falls to 350117, and there's a few minutes' stop here for a toilet stop, unusual in my experience but I'm glad I heard about it on my walk to the last coach I need on this one! 350117 has now joined the ever-growing club of Super Duds, indeed this is the second one to join today so far! I had originally planned to do Tamworth with a +11 but after the 6 minute delay was incurred that's no longer an option! There's disruption due to a failed freight train in the Hemel Hempstead area today too, which has me concerned about disruption to the 350/3 diagrams. A swift half at winner Spoons The William White, Nuneaton is had for £1, a handy way to fill the fester!

As booked, 350374 is on the 1302 Crewe to Euston, the third winner of the day and 5 more 350/3s to go! Of course, I'm hoping that I will get more of them in the book yet, only one way to find out! I get gen on Twitter from LM about some of the moves I was looking at, as both of my previously-done 350/3s are out I won't be going home with them all done after all. In theory I should leave the WCML South later with just 1 to get, but we'll see how the next few hours go first! I have 30 minutes here, and as all the Spoons are a little too far away to do, I settle with a trip to Costa. Yes I know I previously said my caffeine requirements, but that was before any beer! I also needed to add points from a previous visit to Costa in Birmingham, and it takes several goes to make the till recognise the app here too! Good thing it was rather quiet when I got there then, and I had two very friendly and helpful baristas on today, a credit to the business. Back to the rails, I await the arrival of the ECS from Bletchley CS [5K34 - Ed], which sees 350377 and 350375 on it, attaching to 350130 [which will have worked 1424 Euston to MKC - Ed]. Excellent, two winners here then and I'll be now down to just 3 more 350/3s to get upon departure! One of which is due to be on the 1605 Euston to Tring and 1656 return, which leaves only other diagram to go for.

That involves the 1734 Euston to Watford Junction, and I have no gen for it but guessing it has to have 350369 or 350376 on it. We'll soon find out! I'm getting desperate to get the lot in today, so on the way to Hemel Hempstead I tweet a request for gen. In a way I don't mind having to come back again, but as 350370 came off diagram [diagram here says it was due to do 1446 Euston to Crewe, but noted it in 1454 Euston to Northampton instead - Ed] I figure I'll ask. I'm only waiting a short time to find 350369 isn't out today, but 350376 is on 2J47 1734 Euston to Watford Junction. I shall have to hunt 350369 when I next do a WMDR or another Great Escape then! 350373 produces on 1605 Euston to Tring as booked, with duds 350102 and 350368 for company. Back on them at Tring after a photo stop, off to Harrow & Wealdstone next for the 1734 Euston to Watford Junction to [hopefully! - Ed] score 350376. So is the plan anyway! I have 20 minutes here, so I explore options for tea. McDonalds will do nicely, although the meal was not what I would call hot by any means! Still it did the job, as hunger had really kicked in again by now, and I didn't envisage any chance to get food for hours yet otherwise. I won a free McFlurry off the Monopoly Golden Chances stickers at least, will be looking to cash [I'm not sure how you 'cash' in a McDonalds Monopoly sticker mind! - Ed] that in later!

350373 at Tring by 43002, on Flickr

Winner 350376 (with dud 350240 for company) is indeed on 1734 Euston to Watford Junction, excellent news as it leaves just 350369 to get one day! Not bad at all, 7 out of a possible 8 winners, if only 369 had been out vice 368 or 372! I score the microgrice into platform 10 at Watford Junction too, unexpected that! I didn't bring my ST Publications book with me today, so I have no idea if any of the Bakerloo line sets or the various tampers/stoneblowers noted today are required sights yet. I did score 70016 at Apsley earlier though which was a lucky notation really! Triple duds [did you expect anything else?! - Ed] 350242, 350233 and 350265 are taken on the 1754 Euston to Northampton all the way to the end, and I initially think it's a +23 for a Birmingham train but it's actually a +11 [the plus at MKC was just +1 so no chance! - Ed] so that will do. Looks like I'm getting 350118 though, a Super Dud. Hmm, maybe I'll wait the extra 12 minutes in case another one can be made into a Super Dud. I shall decide shortly! We arrive bang on time at journey's end into platform 1 at Northampton, I can't remember if that's a required microgrice or not!

Northampton's new station building by 43002, on Flickr

I didn't realise that Northampton's station building had changed, but the new footbridge and concourse is open and WOW! What a difference to the old station! It sure looks far more impressive than it did before, although I disagree about having a Starbucks here. I can't stand their coffee, obviously Pumpkin wasn't deemed good enough anymore! I see it's 350128 to Birmingham for me, as 118 has been taken off to go to depot. My trio that I came up on went ECS south at 1918, although to where I have no idea. I also note the next Birmingham rolled in as a trio of /1s, with the front two coming off to go onto Kings Heath depot as well. I shockingly needed 3 coaches on 350128, that changes now! I feel the need for a celebratory pint [no doubt after finding a winner Spoons! - Ed] later, I can't believe how successful today has been after all! Yes I knew I would be due a fair few 350/3s but I didn't know how many I'd actually get. No winner shacks, that will have to wait for a future Great Escape. Well, probably two of them to get all the do-able ones! Now I wonder what I can spy on DIRFT this evening...Just 66008 and what appeared to be 08823. Anyone able to confirm this one? It's in a multitude of colours if that helps! By the time I get back to Birmingham,I'll have done 11.5 hours on the rails today, exceptional value for £15 and if you STILL haven't done a Great Escape I cannot recommend one highly enough! Another 350 with no working facilities this one is, not good now things are filling up!

Such a shame it's the last train of the day, although I'm glad I got that coffee 5 hours ago now as I'm starting to get rather tired! Arrival at New Street is at 2019,exactly 11.5 hours after leaving Hereford. I find a winner Spoons [told ya! - Ed] at The Dragon Inn, and two halfs of different beers are had to celebrate an amazing day! It's only about 5 minutes walk too to base camp, for this trip that's Ibis Budget on Great Colmore Street. Long time readers of these trip reports may remember I stayed here a few years ago, although admittedly I forget what trip it was for! Check in is done and the usual evening away from home procedures are carried out, after which it's time to post this trip report and relax after a busy day.

Stats for the day are not ready yet, partly down to the RailMiles app not recognising Harrow and Wealdstone! Stay tuned tomorrow evening for the summary of the morning's action!

A great read so far there Tech! Hard lines on that last 350/3 but it shouldn't be too difficult to track down another time since you have the diagrams to hand.
A great escape sounds like a fantastic value ticket and it's added to my list of ever growing ideas. You wouldn't happen to know when the next round of great escapes are happening would you?

No idea when the next GE will be yet I'm afraid, but there's never a huge amount of advance warning! Usually around school half-terms or Easter holidays, should also be one in the summer holidays.

Aye 350369 should be easy enough to find later this spring :)

Good day you've had there. I read this before i have even looked at Twitter. I'm hoping i get my final 350/3 on Thursday (although I still have eight other LM 350s to find). A couple of spoons there I've not done too! Nuneaton and the one in Brum both still required.

There's two in Nuneaton apparently, but I didn't have time to do the other one too. I see a WMDR in the future just to go after required Spoons!

Glad to hear you've all enjoyed the read, I can't imagine the remainder of it will be terribly exciting to be honest!

Excellent read as ever. And well done with reducing those 350/3s to the quantity that I've had! I really must get out on another GE but it is a matter of finding the best time when I can really do it justice, ie start at 0930 & finish about 2100-2200.
