Oo-er, I'm hoping that there are no issues when I'm up there on my forthcoming holiday!

My suggestion to anyone coming for a metro bash, is tune your mobile phone radio's into 95.4 FM, BBC Radio Newcastle, has roughly every half hour their travel bulletins, which covers road, rail and planes, if theres a problem on the metro, you'll find out about it.
I've said this for a while too, Nexus or DB Regio, should invest in more Battery loco's and place them strategically round the network, not just base them at the South Gosforth Depot. If they had a thunderbird in place, the fiasco between Heworth and Gateshead, as an example, a battery loco at Pelaw, could've at least moved the errant metro and got things moving again. Maybe I'm just talking too much common sense though and hindsight is a wonderful thing too. However one other problem on the metro infastructure has, is a lack of loops to siding off a failed loco, to get things moving relatively quickly again.
Think it's just going through what I call light bulb syndrome, you fix one and another goes off.
Hope you enjoy your holiday up here in Gods Country.

Well I finally got around to reading how it went "on the toon". What a trip! Despite some hiccups here and there is looks like it was a great trip overall. I've never been on the T&W metro so will have to find an excuse! I have friends in Washington, which seems to be the big hole in the metro network!

Sorry to hear you trip back was delayed. Yes ATW are really stingy - sometime they will pay out more if they take a long time to respond to your compensation request though.

Can't wait to hear about the next trip - you really bring the excitement through in the reports!

Where are you off on Monday?

Mostly all over the WCML South, got 12 350s to get as well as 321416. Not to mention requiring Tring and quite a few stations on the Marston Vale and St Albans Abbey lines :)

I did consider using it to pop up to Liverpool, but I can do that another day and I have too much I need south of Milton Keynes to not do it!

Good luck mate and I hope the sun shines. Even without the sunshine I'm sure you will have a good day. I will look forward to the report.

Rain and snow showers forecast for tomorrow, but I'm not expecting great weather at this time of year to be fair.

A good day is almost guaranteed, and I predict work will start on the trip report on Tuesday. Going to take a while to get through it, without any doubt as they usually do

14.5 hours until the alarm goes off now, and hashtag for the trip has been settled with #operationdesiro for those of us who use Twittter :)

Or can access it :(

Hope those 350s are being kind :)

Harsh, I'd be well annoyed if I couldn't access Twitter or here while away! The 350s were indeed kind, as the trip report will no doubt reveal! Time to start it on the way home from work, to be continued on the commute to/from work tomorrow. So here we go:

23/02/2015 - Techniquest's Operation Desiro, Day 1

Trip title at least slightly inspired by Dragonforce's Operation Ground and Pound.

Crikey didn't the last couple of weeks drag, especially the last few days! Some tough times at work recently, so this trip was definitely earnt! My A5 notebook is now retired, as it was deemed to be falling apart too much to survive this trip. So the A4 notebook, bought way back on 11th July 2011, sees a revive at long last, not used it properly since 6th December 2013! The day before this trip saw preparations complete much quicker than anticipated, and as per usual I struggle to sleep due to excitement and anticipation, to fever pitch extremes!

About 3 hours of doss is all I manage before getting up 20 minutes early, ahead of the alarm, at 0540. Own-brand weetabix and coffee get devoured for breakfast, and time flies by with final preparations being required sooner than expected, then it's the walk up town in rather chilly conditions for the 0645 bus. My usual chariot, VX12 FBO, produces as booked and I'm almost at 11,000 miles on it now [10,898.2 to be precise! - Ed]. It's a 52 minute cruise through the shire to Hereford today, with the trip report started en-route. I also have almost 2 months of commutes to log in my A6 book [always good to have a backup! - Ed] too, something I really need to get on with!

First stop, the ticket office to get my Great Escape for today. £15 lighter, the traditional move to Morrisons is made for a supplies raid [I was so tempted to make a more obvious reference to The Last Of Us there! - Ed]. Meal deal, own-brand diet cola and some of those new spicy Walkers MixUps are sourced. Got to be worth trying those crisps at £1! A few more observations are made before the first of many trains is joined, today 1M59 0849 Hereford to Birmingham New Street is in the hands of 153375 and 170502. LM 321 services noted off the forum onto the phone for later, and the observations so far are posted to the "Trains you've seen working" thread [see my forum signature for the link - Ed]. Dog Box Thrash time!

I had forgotten how irritating the stagger via Worcester Shrub Hill is, but I remind myself it gives me an extra 28 chains for my 2015 mileage total. The mundane journey, made so many times over the years, will one day be a part of history so worth enjoying it now! I enter Trip Planning Process (TPP) Mode today, and while I need to further research it I may be getting a Network Railcard for this year's umpteen South East trips. Arrival is at 1022 after the practically mandatory wait in the tunnels outside New Street, and I find nothing of interest so stick to the plan and get on 350110 on the 1054 to London Euston anyway. I did wait to see what was working the 0904 Liverpool to Birmingham, but RTT said it was due in at 1052, too tight to belt it down the full length of platform 4 if it was indeed dud. Just as well I didn't do it as it turned out, as I'd have not made a useful observation at Rugby, where I bail from 350110.

The weather is rather stunning so far today, and much to my annoyance my flask of coffee is already nearly empty. With only a bit of it left, I finish it by Canley. All being well I'm due to get my first 350/3 for haulage from Rugby, hence making sure I got the 1054 from New Street to have a +20 onto the 1002 Crewe to Euston. A lineside fault between Rugby and Milton Keynes caused the 1046 Euston to Crewe to be diverted via Northampton, just as well I wasn't going for it anyway as it was 350119. A most unexpected observation is made, with 350231 on the 1125 Northampton to New Street. Frantic searching through the timetable revealed it should work the 1254 New Street to Euston next, I now have a game plan!

As expected, my move gets me my first winner of the day with 350372, and I have a silent celebration as I dive on for a table seat, so as to give my phone some charge for a belting run via Weedon to Milton Keynes Centraal. Indeed there was an issue heading north towards Rugby, we passed at least 3 stationary 390s queuing for their turn to continue north! The run to MKC is over before I know it, and I see the 1146 Euston to Crewe was also a 350/1, good thing I wasn't going for that one either! I rejoin 350110 heading south, making it a Super Dud, for a trip to Berkhamsted. I have a bit of a fester here, getting my first Puccino's coffee of 2015 [I love the stuff, more so the funny images and writing on the cups and sugar packets! - Ed] and it turns out to be well worth the fester as the 1234 Euston to Tring produces a pair of 321s to my surprise, expected only one. Much better than that, it's dud 321415 leading winner 321416! Excellent news as 321416 is my last LM 321 to get in the book! Off to Tring for sure then for the microgrice into platform 4 and today's first winner shack!

A mandatory photostop is had before rejoining the pair on the 1326 Tring to Euston, deciding to go all the way to London. After all, this could well be my last ever chance to do 321s on the WCML, what with 319s being due to take their place for the 321s to go to Scotland! Of course, it's back to the motor coach for the noise :D

I'm now on Twitter trying to get gen on 350239, as I'm having no luck finding it on my own. Some very quick responses were received, and I get confirmation of 350231 being on the 1254 New Street to Euston. Many thanks must go to Dennis on LM's Twitter account for the help and excellent customer service! 350239's on Birmingham to Liverpool services today, and I start figuring out a plan for getting it in the book. A most enjoyable run to Euston had, I end up on 350235 on the 1424 to Milton Keynes Centraal for a leap to Watford Junction. The plan of course was to get 350231 in now, and sure enough it turns up with 350237 (banged on at Northampton). Back to Euston I go, very chuffed at having got my penultimate 350/2 in the book!

Photos got at both Watford Junction and Euston for some sort of proof, I start planning more moves as I've seen 350368 working the 1446 Euston to Crewe, which of course I need. Will the afternoon's plan work? Only one way to find out! I finally get a proper look at those so-called Borismasters, good golly gosh they're ugly and look uncomfortable to ride in!

Sorry guys but that will have to do for tonight, my commute home is over. I will try to upload photos this week and add them to this lot. In the meantime, stay tuned for what happens next. Will I make it for 350239, my last 350/2? Will it stick to diagram? Did the WCML go belly up and mess the day up? Find out tomorrow! ;)

Cracking read there sir, looking forward to more!

No doubt that kept you busy on your commute this morning ;) Glad you and blindtraveller enjoyed the read thus far, couldn't get on the laptop last night to upload photos I'm afraid! However I have added all my moves to RailMiles, the figure for Day 1 surprised me to be honest!

Here we go with the remainder of Day 1, hopefully also the first part of Day 2 as well before I get to work:

23/02/2015 - Techniquest's Operation Desiro, Day 1 CONTINUED!

It's off to platform 14 this afternoon for the 1546 Euston to Crewe, and I'm hoping for a 350/3. Much to my dismay it's 350124, and it's very busy on this one so I'm glad I got down there with plenty of time to spare, as spare seats were already running low! Off we go right time and it's time for some tunes, making one last lot of observations on this sector of the LM empire. A surprise was 37069 hauling a refurbished GA MK3 on Wembley EUFOC! Some classic dance music is on this afternoon from 1999 and 2000, and much to my annoyance I see 350370+350375 (noted earlier on Bletchley CS at 1224, 350375 being my last 350/3 for sight! :D) are with 350235 on the 1547 MKC-Euston! A working to remember for next time that, didn't know that one was booked for a trio, the 1647 is I know that much.

To rub salt in the wound, I see 350377 with 350263 on what looks like the 1622 off MKC to Euston. If it wasn't for going after my last 350/2 I'd have been staying on WCML South! The trip report is back up to date just after Rugby, it taking slightly longer to do than planned as a result of being distracted by Lock 'n Load's Blow Your Mind [worth a try if you've not heard it before, a right proper classic! - Ed]! After dealing with a PNB, now I can finally move down the train after Nuneaton, I sit back and relax the cruise up the Trent Valley.

Plan A now is to bail at Stafford for a +1 onto the 1701 New Street to Lime Street, Plan B is to continue with freshly Super Dud 350124 to Stoke-on-Trent with a healthy +21 to pick up 350368 back to Stafford then go after 350239. As we're 2 minutes down at this point, that's a -1 at Stafford. However the gods of LM and NR were on my side [cheering me on from way above no doubt! - Ed] and we have a little slack at Lichfield Trent Valley so leave on time. As we approach Stafford the danger music is playing in my head [for reference, it's the tune used in the episode of The Big Bang Theory when they're playing Secret Agent Laser Obstacle physics! - Ed] and I'm at the door and ready to pelt it up the stairs to platform 5 as the 1701 New Street to Lime Street is on time and waiting to go! Winner for sight GBRf 66763 is seen leaving light engine heading south, sweet! By some miracle I make the +1 unlike some others, and we leave on time.

It takes a few moments, after checking the number of the coach I'm in, for it to sink in that I had done it, that I was finally on my last 350/2 to get for haulage! :D It's time to start planning my next move now, as I was tempted by multiple options here. Go all the way to Lime Street to pick up something for tea, score the shack at Hartford or bail at Crewe with a potentially dodgy plus for 350368. I see on RTT it would be a +50 to come back from Hartford, no thanks then! It's also revealed we're due into Crewe at 1755, so a +7 is available. Interesting, yes I'm going for it! Crewe LNWR provides a surprise winner for sight, 09204, my first 09 for sight in a long time! We arrive at 1756 and a quick photo for proof of my getting 350239 is got before I have a silent celebration as I rush over the bridge to reach platform 3.

It was too dark for a photo, but I also saw 92033 in that new livery, which looked most smart. Winner 350368 is indeed on the 1802 Crewe to Euston, and I'm sure I need the micro-grice out of platform 3 here. I really must remember to check all the micro-gricing in my Quail soon too! 158854 arrives at 1802 from Derby, wasn't expecting that! Off we go right time, and that's winner number 5 [if you didn't immediately think of Lou Bega's Mamboo Number 5 at that point you should look it up! - Ed] for the day and my 4th 350 scored! I'm off to Stafford now via Stoke-on-Trent, which clears all of the 350-operated routes of the LM empire for coverage on 350s. Been wanting to do that for a long time, and hopefully it's not too long to wait for a train to Wolverhampton so I can get to base camp.

I find there's a +20 so that's not too bad. 70020 makes an appearance on a northbound container train at Stafford, which my 2014 NREA says I don't need for sight but my ST Publications 2013 UK combine says I do. I really must get on with a thorough cross-reference of the two books asap and make sure they agree with each other! 350260 is on the 1804 Lime Street to New Street and I'm certainly feeling the effects of a busy day and bad sleep now. Back on very well trodden territory, I make the short walk to base camp, on this trip that's Brittania Hotel, Wolverhampton.

After dropping stuff off, I head to The Moon Under Water (Wetherspoon) for a much needed meal of burger and chips with a pint of Tuborg. Not bad value at all for £5.49, as it really filled me up nicely! I head back to the station in the rain, however I'm definitely feeling too shattered to make any more effort to increase my 2015 mileage now. Of course, if there were 350/3s running in the Birmingham area I'd have made more effort but that's still not the case yet. So I return to my budget hotel, via Sainsburys Local for a supplies raid ahead of tomorrow morning.

The usual evening-away procedures are carried out and I get the trip report and books updated. The alarm gets set for 0630 when I finally decide I'm not getting up super early for more cranking. Very pleased with the day overall, with some excellent results and my books do look significantly better now. 5 winners (4 350s and 1 321), 1 winner shack (Tring) and 3 new sights (6 including sets scored on the Bakerloo line), with a more-than-expected 414 miles and 67 chains covered! Yes I am very pleased with that indeed!

So that was Day 1, which took me far longer to do than expected as I'm now getting off the bus. Day 2 to be started on the way home!

It did indeed, up to Wembley as I remember! Then I was occupied by the 90s and old 86s in the yard anyway.

Great report as always, a proper productive day had there. I'm familiar with "Blow Ya Mind" - good tune for hammering along the rails!

Surely you mean Secret Agent Laser Obstacle chess!

A brilliant read!

Fishquinn, you could be right, it's been a while since I last saw that episode!

55013: Glad I could be of service with some inspiration!

Blindtraveller: I only paid £25 for my stay at Brittania Hotel, although breakfast is either £7 or £8 extra. Cheaper to do breakfast in Spoons across the road!

Glad you've all enjoyed the read again so far, Day 2 is started (possibly finished, we'll see!) below on tonight's commute home, if I don't finish it tonight I will on tomorrow's commute to work.

24/02/2015 - Techniquest's Operation Desiro, Day 2

Despite being shattered last night, I struggled to sleep until silly o' clock :( Didn't help my bed was not that comfortable, although at least the pillows were not an issue. The hotel's decor is also outdated, but to be fair I wasn't expecting much for £25! Breakfast was either £7 or £8 more, no thanks I'll have it off-site for much less! Up and about with the alarm at 0630 and it's fair to say I wasn't feeling great. Two nights of bad sleep in a row now, can't wait for my own bed tonight! Time now for a thorough de-rance, and the shower does a wonderful job of waking me up! The tiny towels were an eye-opener mind, just about big enough for a toddler!

Eventually I'm ready to go at 0705, and after dropping off the keycard I'm at Wolverhampton ticket office by 0711. £15 lighter and my Great Escape is in my hand. Such a shame I'm only using it to go back to Hereford today mind, I'd have loved to go after some more 350/3s! The 0719 goes to Four Oaks randomly, guaranteed to be a 323 then, excellent news as it's been a while since my last trip on a Starship, more so on the Wolverhampton to Birmingham line. Super Dud Starship 1 [323201 for the uneducated - Ed] is on it and I find a seat on an already busy service, very busy indeed by Smethwick!

A most enjoyable run had on my favourite class of EMU, it's off to McDonalds for breakfast. I use the new self-service screens as I'm paying by card anyway. Very funky that's for sure and I'll happily use them again when I'm next back here. My bacon roll meal gets devoured and well worth £3.39. Eventually I return to the station and end up doing a Thriller Filler leap to University (Birmingham) with Starship 5 and Super Dud Starship 43 which I'm certain were on 0740 Lichfield Trent Valley to Redditch, 0822 off New Street at least. The crowds alighting this and other trains here surprised me, with a fight to get out of the station via the far-too-small gateline for a mini explore.

More observations are made [anyone who's read the entire lot from this trip on the "Trains you've seen working" thread will agree I observed a LOT over the two days! - Ed] before begrudingly joining Super Dud [all 170s with LM are Super Dud and have been for a long time - Ed] 170632 on the 0849 Birmingham New Street to Hereford. Off home I go, well to work first! I did consider doing the 0949 to Hereford instead, but deemed the 40 minutes to march across town and get ready for work to be insufficient. So once again I leave the new loop at Alvechurch to be done another day. I spend the journey to Worcester writing the trip report, then it's onto the moves book, along with more of the coffee I put into the flask this morning. Whatever the coffee is out of the sachets from the hotel, it's rancid and I would steer well clear!

By Malvern Link the moves book is done, thanks to getting held for some time at Newland East [I think! - Ed] crossing. The weather is most glorious today, making for a nice journey for the cruise to Hereford. I happen to notice in the moves book it's exactly a year ago today since 2014's first Great Escape, wow that long ago already since I did Acton Bridge amongst other exciting things! Arrival at The Ford [local nickname for Hereford - Ed] is at 1023, and the lifts are STILL not in use yet! Today's observations are posted to the forum and it's off to my most favourite place in the universe [please note, extreme sarcasm was used in that statement! - Ed]. Being rather tired that was one heck of an endurance!

After work it's a march back across town to the station for some more observations before my bus home. YE52 FHA is the Optare Solo for the last bus home tonight [do you all feel sorry for me yet? - Ed] which I'll shortly be nearly 4,200 miles on. I start typing the trip report for Day 1 on this commute, which encompassed almost 3 sides of A4 and I get a surprisingly long way into it too. And so ends another great trip, although I'm of course already in TPP Mode for the next one in 13 days time! Where will I be going? I don't know myself, but there will be a trip report and no doubt details of the plan will be posted to this thread too before it happens. Once I get home, after a 56 minute bounce around the curvy route and rough roads, it's time for tea. Later I get my journeys added to RailMiles, so not much bookwork left to do now. TripAdvisor review for Brittania Hotel, Wolverhampton [and one for Hebburn Bed and Breakfast still waiting to be done! - Ed] and photos for this and my last trip is all that's left to do now.

Some final stats then:

Day 2 mileage: 67 miles and 75 chains
Highlight of the trip: Naturally it's finally clearing the 350/2s and LM 321s for haulage!
Low point of the trip: The bad sleeps
Move of the Day, Day 1: 321416+321415 1326 Tring to London Euston :D
Move of the Day, Day 2: Starship 1 0719 Wolverhampton to Four Oaks (obviously only to New Street for me!) :D
Tune of the Day, Day 1: Lock 'n' Load's Blow Your Mind
Tune of the Day, Day 2: My Chemical Romance's Famous Last Words

Much to my surprise I'm done with time to spare, even after extra stuff in addition to my notes, tonight! I suspect the commute to work tomorrow will be rather dull now, unless I make the effort to do those commute logs!

Hope you all enjoyed the read, I enjoyed writing it! Now to await the decision on my next trip, but wherever it will be to [I've got a LOT of options being decided on! - Ed] I only have one thing to say:

BRING IT ON! :D

Don't have to go to London ;) Milton Keynes or Watford could potentially still be done, then there's also the possibility of squeezing in some 350s and a Liverpool bash. There's also the Bletchley to Bedford line and Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey, again more non-London options. Depending where you define as London of course, Watford may be too close at 17 miles away!

Yes! <D

Another great travelogue to read, I look forward to you coming down here again and cracking on with those 350/3s (if you're not bored enough of me banging on about them to you recently!) :D

There's also the Bletchley to Bedford line and Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey, again more non-London options. Depending where you define as London of course, Watford may be too close at 17 miles away!

Watford would be fine but I don't think I can persuade Nat to travel on LM all day!

Fantastic report as always, well done on completing the 350/2s and LM 321s. Must agree with Kristofferson on My Chemical Romance! :)

Tune of the Day, Day 2: My Chemical Romance's Famous Last Words
Yes! <D

Another great travelogue to read, I look forward to you coming down here again and cracking on with those 350/3s (if you're not bored enough of me banging on about them to you recently!) :D

Glad you agree with my choices for TotD, admittedly I also like MCR's I Don't Love You, Welcome to the Black Parade, Dead and Disenchanted off that album.

I have other tastes in music too but I'll be here all day going into that!

I never get sick of 'talking shop' with fellow enthusiasts, and I will be back to do more 350/3s eventually but I have a long list of other objectives for 2015 to work through yet too!

Thanks for your kind words, and same for all of you too. It really does make it worthwhile sharing these, and puts a big grin on my face. Tough times at work mean little things like that do cheer me up!

I'm still in early stages of TPP for my next trip, it will mostly depend on tomorrow and what I get, plus of course reasonable rates on hotels!

Fishquinn: Fair point, hope you find a suitable option for both of you on Saturday!

Just received a reply from ATW about my delay compensation, given I was an hour and 10 minutes late getting back to Hereford on the trip home from Newcastle. Didn't expect much, half of the £28 I paid for the Advance at the most.

I have, however, got two vouchers totalling £28 from them, so 100% of the fare in RTVs! :D Now to decide where to go with them, although I am already thinking of a rather useful use of them. Stay tuned for details soon <D

Well after MUCH debating with myself the pros and cons of different trips, and several being binned due to lack of reasonable Advances available, I have in the last few minutes booked the hotel for the next epic trip! :D Crikey that was a fun 5 days of TPP to get it planned, took longer than planned!

The full trip report will explain the full backstory as usual, but until then I'll be in Manchester (well, Oldham) this time next week. The basic plan is to get up to Manchester and do a massive, massive Metrolink bashing session, something I've been going to do for a very long time! :D

Whether I'll just do Metrolink and nothing else, I've yet to decide. Knowing what I'm like, I'll end up changing plans and getting drawn in by the mainline stuff like last time!

Hashtag will probably be #MetrolinkMadness but I'll confirm this by Saturday. Bring it on that's for sure! :D

If you're interested don't forget Pathfinder are blasting round that way all Friday night and Saturday morning. And to tempt you into heavy rail, ELR spring gala this weekend as well!

Thanks
