Enjoying your write up`s Tech, sounds like a great trip, thing I would have gone for Seattle though, lol.

I was thinking about your comment last night, on the walk back to base in the heavy rain, and while I'm tempted to agree I also think the sort of trip Seattle would have been is more suited to going with someone. Someone that also enjoys their coffee and would like to tour different coffee shops, oh my that sounds like fun right now :D

Some more photos from Day 2, then I will crack on with the proof-read of Day 3. Back to work this afternoon!

OK then, here's Day 3. The last 4 days still need proof-reading, editing and so on. My Delay Repay claims are now all in, the bag is unpacked and I'm slowly waking up. It's a bit weird being back at base, and having no complimentary food and drink now! I won't provide any further spoilers, here's the next instalment:

02/11/2022 - Tech's First In His Class, Day 3

Perhaps having the bath after arriving back at the Airbnb was not the brightest idea, as it was after 0230 when I got to sleep. 0630 and its alarm was not welcome, but I stuck with it and slowly got ready. A look on RTT suggested there was no chance of getting my last 158s in, not without leaving Scotland quite late in the day. No matter, I wanted to come back to the Highlands in 2023 so I will try again then. Other than that, all that remained was to position myself for the 0755 to London Kings Cross. With plenty of time to spare, I went for a walk which took me alongside the river, the centre of Inverness and up to Morrisons, where I managed a couple of photos of 158705 on depot and of the Azuma on the London service.

I timed it well when I got to platform 1, as the doors had only just been released. Winner 800102 was on the 0755 to London Kings Cross, and I happily took seat 10 in coach M. It was time to 'break out the Bru!' with a can of Irn Bru, and that was seriously welcome. An on time departure, and shortly after orange and apple juice was offered. Thankfully, soon after coffee was brought out and the Let's Eat Dine Menu was in use today. Less than 1 minute later, and I hadn't even had time to open it, food orders were taken.

I went for the Full LNER Veggie breakfast, minus the egg to make it vegan. The woman who took the order confirmed this with me, and I looked forward to the feed. The coffee, in the meantime, was seriously welcome! The plate was soon put in front of me, and it had egg on it. The full plate was meant to be a hash brown, baked beans, a tomato, wilted spinach and Meatless Farm sausages, without egg in my case. The chef refused to acknowledge such an option was available, and they eventually took it away to be sorted. Seriously, a chef who doesn't know his menu is ridiculous!

The food was great, the sausages overcooked but I expected nothing less from a chef who doesn't know what he's cooking! The experience absolutely put me off booking with LNER in the future, for that matter I was already looking at options that got me onto a different route south! The First Class on Azumas is great, but the service is not so good. At least I wasn't in that eye-burning red of Standard Class! Thankfully I soon got back to admiring the scenery, I mean this was the Highland Main Line after all, but it just wasn't as enjoyable because the attitude of the crew just could not be shaken off. I had a feeling I'd leave LNER behind as soon as possible, maybe the West Coast Main Line would see a visit from me. Quite, Glasgow wasn't far away, and that means only one thing!

As I left Pitlochry, I happened to see a sign for a vegan hotel. Now that intrigues me, I'm definitely going to look that up when I return to this part of the world! No good options really out of Perth, so I decided to stay put. As I had now sat on both sides up and down the Highland Main Line, which side did I prefer? Honestly, heading north I found that being on the left side was best. It's great scenery on both sides, but I found being on the left going north was better. For the most part, it's been a great time in Scotland, and a fantastic way to start this adventure. The rest of the week was looking likely to stay south of the border, but that could easily change!

I noticed that there was an option to do the 1117 from Stirling to Inverness, as it was showing as a 170+158. One of my last 3 158s was due to be on it, and I looked at options to do it. If it wasn't for getting all the way to Southampton, ideally at a reasonable hour, then I'd have gone for it. Decisions, decisions! The weather made the decision for me in the end, with it being wet in Stirling I had no desire to explore the city in the rain! I finally made it to Haymarket at 1109, which meant the North of Edinburgh Azuma routes were now cleared for 800 coverage. Haymarket to Motherwell was still wanted for such a thing, but that would happen one day.

Double winners 385107+385114 took me west, and I could soon bail out for more winners. The temptation was very real to do so, given how little my red pen had been used so far! So I got out to try a +2 at Polmont, easily managed as it turned out because I was almost by the footbridge, and I took double winners 385120+385110 to Edinburgh. I had been going to do lunch in Glasgow, but I now changed that to finish off my supplies from Co-Op Nairn. An early arrival made the cross-platform change in Edinburgh super easy, and I managed to get one of the last seats in First Class on winner 397004.

Soon after Haymarket, a hot drinks service was carried out and I also got some crisps. The coffee was good, and I settled in for the hour and 20 minutes it was due to take to Carlisle. I had looked at going on the 1300 as far as Doncaster, with a short wait for a Hull Trains service to London, but I was fed up with LNER and I wanted to try out the First Class on a 397. It's not bad to be fair, nice and comfortable and a nice enough vibe. It was slow running all the way to Lockerbie after Carstairs, due to strong wind and heavy rain. 40mph feels very slow! 28 late into Lockerbie, and I have to say I'm glad I wasn't doing a cycling week! All this time sat on trains has been helpful for progressing some neuroplasticity that I've been trying to implement for quite some time. I won't bore anyone with details, all I'll say is that things are going in the right direction!

Back to full speed after Lockerbie, which was incredibly welcome! A shade before 2pm and it was into Carlisle, and I could certainly see why there were speed restrictions in place. The wind and rain were very significant, and that was in an urban area, I can only imagine what it would be like in the countryside! I popped up the road to Tesco and got some biscuits, as I was fancying something sweet and nothing else was going to satisfy that. Back at the station, and it wasn't long until 390008 arrived on the 1240 Glasgow Central-London Euston. I took a seat in coach K, one of those weird airline-style rows. Catering service started quite quickly, and I got a coffee. As if you expected me to say much else there eh? 6 of the biscuits were used for dunking into the tall, slim mug and the coffee was soon gone. Hot food orders were next, no menus to peruse but I was assured the vegetable noodles were vegan so I went with that. I had no idea if they would be any good, but I would find out!

The short answer is that I was impressed! It had sugar snap peas, babycorn, mushrooms, red pepper and something else in a nicely tasty sauce. While I might not choose that every time, it was definitely worth trying and I say that as a vegan who is rather fussy! After the food, and having enjoyed the tilting through Cumbria which is some of the best on the West Coast Main Line, I looked up all the 444s I wanted. Only 1 wasn't out, although how I was going to get all that many of them remained to be seen!

Another drinks service after Preston and Wigan, hot and cold respectively, with the journey going rather well and 4 more biscuits joined the coffee. I didn't realise there was an 08 at some freight terminal soon after Wigan, so I didn't get the number frustratingly. It is also worth noting that the small windows were annoying me somewhat on this journey, normally I don't have an issue with that which is perplexing. The scenery could not fully be enjoyed in the rancid weather anyway, and I was trying to work out my best route to the South Western Railway network. The obvious route would be LU directly from Euston to Waterloo, on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. I wasn't really in the mood for LU, but if the weather was awful then I wouldn't want to do the walk from Euston to St Pancras either! My third option was London Overground to Willesden Junction and across to Clapham Junction. If the weather was as good as it had been in Inverness, I'd have walked!

After Crewe, it was 'right away driver, full speed ahead' with a non-stop run to London Euston. I had now moved seats to one which had been reserved until Preston, but not taken, and as it was a solo seat I was not staying in the claustrophobic seat I was on! The journey was now infinitely better than the ride down from Carlisle as a result. Armed with an Earl Grey and some orange juice, the weather had dried up considerably, which was a welcome sight as the sun started to conclude its appearance for the day.

Rugby, and a medical stop for a passenger sadly needing an ambulance, is where I heard the line was closed in the Armington (I think) area, so I'm rather glad I got south when I did! Passing through Milton Keynes Central non-stop was certainly a guilty pleasure, stopping there on a fast train always annoys me in the same way it does at Slough. The journey was nearly over, so where would I put Avanti West Coast's First Class? With only two main operators, East Midlands Railway and Greater Anglia on their Norwich to London route, left to sample First Class on, I've now nearly tried all of the options. Service was attentive, and speedy, so no complaints there. I didn't do any lounges, but they were on the list to investigate as the week went on. The food was good, drinks options were varied and unlike LNER on all counts it wasn't a case of trying to be all upper class. I would absolutely put them above Transpennine Express and ScotRail, with Hull Trains and GWR leading the way. Grand Central, I must confess I'd forgot about, but I'm not convinced I'd be valid with them anyway. As they only use 180s now, I'm not too bothered one way or another!

Arrival at London Euston's platform 2 was at 1751, 31 minutes late. A Delay Repay claim was actively encouraged by the crew, and if I'd gone via the Midlands it would have been a bigger claim! A fast walk via Somers Town got me to St Pancras fairly fast, and the most exercise I'd had in several hours. Downstairs, I had only a short wait for a winner 700, in this case 700005 which I took to Blackfriars. I'd been recently inspired by Kite159 to do the walk to Waterloo, so I finally got to the South Bank exit and got moving nice and fast. For a route I've never done, I was very pleased to do it in less than 8 minutes from street level at Blackfriars, although it's worth mentioning that I had no waiting at any crossing.

Upstairs, I was originally going to get food, but I checked Real Time Trains and found a winner leaving soon. I had to run, but made dud 444029 and winner 444003 on the 1835 to Weymouth and Poole. From Euston platform 2 to platform 16 at Waterloo in 39 minutes, including 2 walks and a really slow Thameslink journey, well I don't think that's too bad! Much looking up my 444s occured next, an easier said than done thing as my signal was rubbish all the way. I had around 38 minutes in Basingstoke to get food, challenge accepted! Just down the road from the station, so close you can see it from the station exit, was Fireaway and they did indeed do vegan pizza. £10, as vegan cheese attracts an extra £2 charge, for an absolutely beautiful 12" pizza and it was made in no time at all.

In the waiting area between platforms 2 and 3, I took cover from the elements and devoured my meal, wow that was worth every penny of £10! 70006 made an incredible racket heading south on an intermodal working, phwoar! Double winners 444021+444013 were up next to take me to Winchester, following other trains pretty much all the way so it was incredibly slow going. The plan was thrown out of the window now, I would have to sacrifice one of the 444s I wanted but this would do. The clouds that burst during my wait in Winchester really brought down a lot of rain, good gravy that noise was incredible! Winner 444022 was next, also late, and I was getting frustrated now. My decision about carrying on was made for me, as due to the delay the 444 was now running non-stop from Southampton to Bournemouth. I'll take that as a sign to call an end to play!

It looked mighty odd seeing Beryl bikes in Southampton, they're slowly taking over the UK! Asda got visited for some supplies, and I'd forgot I also had £7 more to pay on check-in at Premier Inn due to changing dates for the strikes. That was before they changed the strike dates around, originally I'd been going to stay in an Airbnb in Wakefield. Oh well, it'll be worth it for a good night's sleep, I may be banishing Airbnb from my list of acceptable accommodation providers based on the one in Inverness. At least in Premier Inn there's no shared bathrooms, dealing with lockboxes, squeaky beds and so many other things!

The weather got nasty after I arrived, so I'm glad I got in when I did. The downside to room 419 was the noise of trains, hopefully external noise won't be an issue for too long here! Other than that, all that was left to do was running a bath and that was about it. I had an alarm set for 7am, but with rancid weather I was having to re-think what I'd do with Day 4. I had hoped to combine some 444 hunting with exploring Bournemouth and Weymouth, two of my favourite Dorset locations. I left it to destiny, turned the alarm off and turned the phone off too. If I was up early, then fair enough, if not then I'd have had a good rest!

More photos from Day 3 soon!

Wow! Quite a day for the elements. I must admit that I've always found LNER catering crews to be excellent and very accommodating....especially those based in the North and Scotland. It's not very difficult to leave an egg off the plate, is it? Could you tell from their accents whether they were a local crew or a Newcastle/Edinburgh crew on an overnight lodging turn?

I'm not sure to be honest, when it comes to the Scottish accents I'm not very good at distinguishing them! As you'll see in my Day 4 trip report, I had a better crew but then they were from Yorkshire so that helped!

Some more photos from Day 3 attached!

Airbnb needs avoiding at all costs

A blot on the accommodation landscape and dammaging to local communities and housing markets

Good writeups

I've had some excellent Airbnb stays, I must say, with the prime example being the one I did in October 2021 when I stayed in Rainham, Essex. She was a fantastic host, made me feel really at home and relaxed, and we had plenty of conversations over a meal. It was a really beautiful place too, I could not have asked for much better! So they're not all bad!

Day 4 follows this, with the final 3 days still needing proof-reading etc.

03/11/2022 - Tech's First In His Class, Day 4

Wow, that was a good sleep! 0649 and I was awake, it had taken a while to nod off but a good 7 hours of heavy sleep was had. A shower and shave, as well as coffee and 4 biscuits (let's not talk about the food consumption in the room!) then it was a case of checking out where the 5 444s I wanted were. 444020 was not allocated, so no matter what I did then I'd not clear the class, which had always been unlikely anyway. It wasn't too long before a winner was due on the 0759 to Weymouth, so I got ready and trekked through the drizzle along rather wet surfaces to Southampton Central. I'd also seen just why I could clearly hear trains last night, room 419 literally overlooks the railway!

Sadly, Naked Coffee which I had visited on my previous visit to Southampton, was not yet open so I ended up paying silly money, £3.15, for a medium americano at Ritazza. I'd wanted the Ritazza cup nostalgia, as I used to use the outlets regularly, but it was plain white cups. Oh well, never mind! Winner 444015 rolled in and I grabbed a table seat. The weather was still not that amazing, so I didn't really know what to do for the best now. I wanted to do some exploring, that was the reason for booking that Premier Inn, but I also didn't want to do so in the rain! I might well have had a good sleep, but I was still feeling tired, but it's worth noting I usually have B vitamins and calcium amongst other things for daily supplements. I decided before the trip that this would not be required so much on this adventure, so left the tablets that dissolve in water at base. I was not regretting that decision! I had my glucosamine, iron and Omega 3 supplements with me, so that was fine, and upon leaving Bournemouth I decided that I'd seek out a new supply of B vitamins somewhere soon.

After an all-stations journey between Totton and Bournemouth, I joined winner 444016 and friend to Brockenhurst. First Class was much busier in 444016, the group opposite me included a middle class woman who was at one point bragging about a £40 upgrade on LNER just because they kept her fully loaded on wine and chicken stew. I won't comment on that, other than to say that I feel sorry for her! I was in such a rush to deal with urgent matters at Brockenhurst that I forgot to confirm the rear 444. Real Time Trains is usually pretty accurate with these things, so I accepted what it said, and logged 444003 as 444016's partner. With urgent business dealt with, it was onto winning 450041 for an all-stations journey to Bournemouth. A pair of late running 444s meant we left 8 minutes late, and with only 11 minutes between trains in Bo'mo' I was a bit tense.

The 0919 Brockenhurst to Bo'mo' was due to arrive in platform 1 you see, which in the past at least has been an unusual and not easy platform to do. Due to the delay, it was unclear as to whether it would still happen or not, but I had to at least try. The 0959 from the seaside town was due to have one of my last 3 444s to claim for haulage on it, hence the desire to do that particular run. If I didn't make it, then it wasn't the end of the world, I had options for other journeys yet. Some slack in the timetable got us from 11 late at Pokesdown for Boscombe to 8 minutes late. Platform 1, tick, not that I really do such things these days but the oddities of the network get done when it suits. Dud 444024 was up front and winner 444033 on the back, the latter is where I took a table seat in First Class. 2 more 444s to go, and only one left in action for the day. The stomach was getting angry now, so it seemed only logical to stop off in Southampton for a break.

Naked Coffee, I discovered to my disappointment, has closed down. That is a real shame, as not only did they do good coffee but they served a variety of vegan food. I was disappointed, perhaps in another location it would have done better. I went on a walkabout, as I had around 35 minutes to fill before the next GWR to Portsmouth Harbour. I was going after a winner 444 after all, and it was a nice walk with two parks taken in which was nice. Greggs got visited in the end, as Pret wanted £2.70 for coffee and no filter coffee available. I spent £3 on a large coffee and a vegan sausage roll instead, and took it with me back to Southampton Central. I still had a reasonable amount of time to wait for 166202 to Portsmouth Harbour, which would clear that line for coverage on a Turbo. I have been wanting to do that for quite some time, and now Salisbury-Southampton is all that remains of that route for Turbo coverage desires. For what it's worth, I still want Fratton to Portsmouth Harbour on a 158, having done Fratton to Cardiff Central on a 158 in October 2004 on the Brighton Class 31s forum meet. A shade over 18 years ago!

The journey was over in no time, and in the former First Class area all I could hear was the air conditioning unit! Sadly, the planned walkabout in Portsmouth got cancelled due to heavy rain. So after the urgent business, it was basically a case of being bored on the platforms keeping out of the rain! Dud 377322 took me to Fratton, where I had a short wait for winner 444012 to Portsmouth & Southsea Low Level. Just 444020 was left to clear the class, one day it will be mine! Upstairs straight away for dud 444023 on the 1145 Portsmouth Harbour-London Waterloo, as even though the rain had now stopped I was wanting to get on the move to somewhere more exciting, and certainly where more exciting motive power awaited! It was a slow journey, although nicely scenic, and my mobile signal was absolutely disgraceful all the way to Guildford. Not ideal when I wanted YouTube on!

Eventually, arrival at London Waterloo's platform 15 was at 1427, 5 minutes late. Staff availability on the barriers was poor, and I was in a queue of those with ticket issues. I took the wrong route out of Waterloo, but the walk to Blackfriars did at least involve new territory in nice weather. I landed straight onto winner 700123 for the leap to St Pancras International, and a fast walk upstairs got me sat in the First Class lounge at London Kings Cross, with coffee made, at 1458. Not too bad, could have done it a few minutes quicker if I'd not used exit 3 at Waterloo! The lounge at Kings Cross was brilliant, a huge place and good views of the platforms available. I'd spend ages planning and re-planning my afternoon, after some coffee and crisps I settled initially with the 1530 Glasgow, however this was a dud Azuma. So I went back to the 1533 to Harrogate, which was terminating at Leeds on this occasion due to a technical issue. Another re-plan then!

By Potters Bar, a cold drinks service and food orders had been taken. One of those Deli Boxes had to be taken advantage of! A hot drink was also had of course, and the journey was going beautifully until a way before Grantham, when news came in of a Person Hit By Train ahead. A shame to be delayed, a lot of delay was clearly ahead, and the reaction from some of those in coach M was to moan about how it always happens and so on. It is what it is, the way I saw it was that I was sat in a nice and comfortable seat, in the warm and with refreshments. Many, many others would not have that luxury, and of course there would be people whose lives were turned upside down by the event. 1657 and the train arrived in Grantham. 4 minutes later, we were back on the move just as I had firmed up an alternative plan!

Newark Northgate and we arrived at the platform, with doors opening several minutes later. We would go no further for now. I had looked to travel to Wakefield on this, quickly have a look at the First Class lounge before joining a CrossCountry HST to York, but of course that was all not happening. I went for a good wander about, feeling safe in the knowledge it was not likely that the train would leave too soon. I ended up in Asda and got supplies, which included a punnet of black grapes. I finally got a good serving of fruit, this week has been disgracefully bad for fruit and vegetables! Around 1830, we got going again and I'd had some good exercise, so I was quite pleased with that.

Talking of, this crew were much nicer than the one I had from Inverness yesterday, Luisa in particular was very friendly and nothing was too much bother for her. 1846 and we were stopped again a little north of Retford, but I had a tea and some crisps with the seat reclined. So I was comfortable, although I do have to wonder what I might have ended up doing if I'd gone for the pair of 387s I wanted on the 1542 London to Kings Lynn, or indeed if I'd gone and scored the 222 I wanted on the 1602 from St Pancras. If I had done the 1546 London to Beverley, as originally expected, then I'd have been sat on it without the opportunity to have a walkabout. I think I fared quite well in the end, and I noted at 1900 that the lounge I'd planned to visit in Wakefield was due to be open until 2100, so I still had time to tick it off if I desired. Or, indeed, if the 800 actually got permitted to continue!

1920 and the announcement was made to say the line was reopened, not too bad all things considered, I may not have been of that view if I'd been in Standard Class though! I was becoming quite the snobby person, that would need to change and fast. 1954 and I was off the train at Wakefield Westgate, 2 and a bit hours late. I made my way to the First Class lounge, which is tiny! They had green tea though, the first I recall seeing all week, so I got one of those and some water. Originally, the final plan for the day was to take the 2023 Bristol train to Sheffield, but double winners 801101+801109 on the Bradford Forster Square service were just too tempting! Whether or not they would actually go to Bradford, considering the issues, was to be found out before too long.

After being held for quite some time on the bank down into Leeds, the unsurprising news is revealed that the train is not going to Bradford Forster Square after all. After a bit of a look around for options, I noted 195020 which happened to be my last 195/0 to find for sight. A nice little victory! 2111 for the XC to Sheffield, so I had time for a quick walkabout in Leeds. Which I obviously took advantage of! A couple of weed smokers really stunk the air out in places on the walk, ugh! 1.1 miles was managed on a quick circular walk, and Sainsburys got a visit, leaving with just a single banana and a Nomo bar. Given it came to just 97p, I didn't bother scanning my Nectar card. The supermarket chain really annoyed me many weeks ago with bonus points offers not being correctly put on, and this was my first visit to a Sainsburys in a good while. Considering they were my favourite supermarket not long ago, this was just weird. Times were changing, and my choice of supermarket was changing with them!

220030 was all the way up on platform 12C, a bit of a trek and especially so to First Class at the back of the train! Off to Sheffield then on my final journey of the day, it was a pretty different day but definitely a productive one. Considering the circumstances, I could not have asked for much better in the second half of the day. I wouldn't do Wakefield's lounge again, it was almost pointless being there. Seriously, I've seen single bedrooms that would feel huge compared to that lounge! The one at Kings Cross, definitely one I'd go back to, no question of it. Quite, there are only LNER lounges at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Darlington and York that I haven't been too yet. One of those was likely to be done on Day 5, although which one remained to be seen!

To my surprise, I got offered some drinks on the 220, I did not expect that at such a late time of the day. I got some Schweppes lemonade cans and a small bottle of still water, that would do nicely. Not all of it was to be consumed on the journey, but they would inevitably come in handy soon enough! A look through Real Time Trains suggested the Midland Main Line had also suffered a Person Hit By Train incident, so I would have not done much better there after all. I'd noted some big delays and cancellations with Transpennine Express while at Leeds, so not a good day to be on the rails for a lot of people. Perhaps I chose wisely after all!

After a short walk and checking in at Premier Inn, as I had a bath again there was no way I was not running one! This would be my last one of the trip, so I had to make the most of it. Other than that, a nicely relaxing evening and I was looking forward to my 6am alarm!

The first of Day 4's photos have been attached, more will follow soon!

The usual cracking write up mate, enjoying your travels.

Thanks :) Day 5 will go up soon, I haven't got around to going through the notes properly yet. Some more photos from Day 4 are attached to this post, and given the forecast was for rubbish weather on my day off tomorrow then I expect to have the last of the trip report up tomorrow :)

Using Air BnB has never quite appealed. I think the last time I've used something like Air BnB with a spare room rented out in a private house was in Swansea.

Although I guess you could class the shared house in Crewe as an Air BnB even though the host isn't there as all 4 bedrooms are available for booking.

Good news on getting the 444s down, hopefully that last one will pop up on a service calling at Clapham heading towards London the next time you have a little red pen/explore London day :)

Am I the only person here who's had multiple good Airbnb experiences? Not all of them have been good, obviously as my Inverness stay proved, but there are some gems out there. Apart from the one in Rainham, Essex, I had a great experience in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in 2021. Great host, great room, well located for the railway station and Ely itself, excellent value too.

More photos from Day 4, and I'm slowly waking up today (got real problems with energy levels this week) so it's now time to put the earphones in and get on with the editing of the trip report!

And now Day 5 is ready to go! I had actually forgot I didn't file for the Delay Repay claim on the journey to Leicester, once this is posted I will be correcting that!

04/11/2022 - Tech's First In His Class, Day 5

How on Earth was it Day 5 already? It took ages to unwind, much to my disappointment, and my revised alarm for 0530 was not initially welcome. However, upon looking up the 222s of my desires, and seeing one of them was on the 0630 out of Sheffield, I was soon up and enjoying a coffee with biscuits. Out of the front door by 0609 or so, I took a different route down to the station, just to mix things up a bit. On the wall of the swimming pool was 'Bring The Charge' and I'm officially adopting that as a favourite expression! I wish I'd remembered it on Day 7, but we'll get to that!

Winner 222020 was at the front of the 10-car train with the 0630 to London St Pancras, with dud 222101 on the back. I grabbed a solo seat in the very front coach, and shortly after departure I had a coffee, snacks and orange juice. Around Chesterfield, the hot food orders were taken and I already knew that East Midlands Railway had a vegan sausage bap on their menu. So I got one of those which I thoroughly enjoyed, so I was already prepared to say that I'd do a breakfast service on East Midlands Railway again, in First Class of course, quite happily. With 4 222s left to get, and sadly 222022 was not allocated (later seen parked up at the far end of Derby Etches Park depot), I was now looking at options. I had a +12 at Leicester from this train, but I fancied getting out of the train quicker than that if I could. A quick bail-out at Derby was in order, as I could do a dud 'un back to Chesterfield for a reasonable plus onto another winner.

Before I carry this on, I must give a huge shout-out to Real Time Trains, by a long way one of the most useful websites out there when it comes to the railway. The amount of time I spent on it, planning connections and looking up options across the UK, during just this week was incredible. The week would have been less successful in terms of 'red-penning' without it, and when I think back to my 2011 and 2012 ALRs when it wasn't an option, with paper timetables being mandatory, well the difference is night and day!

So it was that I got onto dud 222021 on the leap from Derby, and the First Class host was really friendly and happy to engage with her passengers. With just me and one other passenger in First, I think she was just glad of something to do! If you thought I'd not go for a coffee, then you would be mistaken, and this cup was a bit fuller than the one I got coming out of Sheffield. It's worth noting I had no intention of spending too many hours on Meridians (Class 222s), but the opportunity to get the red pen out and do it in style with these trains had to be taken advantage of. I do have to say though, despite all East Midlands Railway First Class lounges being closed, a hang-over from Covid-19 I guess, that I was liking the First Class experience in this part of the world. It's also worth noting that the weather was rather nice so far, which meant only one thing, and that was that some exploring was mandatory!

With a little over 15 minutes at Chesterfield, I ended up doing some squats and quad stretches to help pass the time, and winner 222007 was soon with me for the journey south. Doing squats with the autumnal colours on the trees made for a nice change, usually they're done, with music blasting into the ears, at base! Sadly, a little into the journey, the train was held up due to an earlier train reporting an obstruction in a tunnel. Fortunately for me, this was not a major issue and I enjoyed a vegan sausage bap and apple juice. With the stomach now satisfied, it was just a case of waiting out the delay. Just before 0820, we proceeded to the tunnel after the obstruction had been removed, at a cautionary pace. The affected tunnel was one of the two in the Ambergate area, and the beautiful weather plus the autumnal scenery made the wait much more acceptable.

Of course, now it was a case of getting moving, I had intentions of being in Winsford by 8pm and I had a lot of exploring to do! It appeared my best option now was to go for the 222 on the 0850 Nottingham to London St Pancras. The delay was looking to be just under 30 minutes on this leg to Leicester, which wasn't too bad. At Leicester, I had a phone call and took a photo of 170621 parked up in the sunshine, then eventually winner 222009 arrived on the 0850 Nottingham to London St Pancras. With much trying to decide what to do, I felt it only wise to stay with the Meridian as far as London. That was made more certain when I saw the next Nottingham from Market Harborough was showing as 180109! I'm just not a big fan of the Adelantes (and if you don't immediately think of Sash's Adelante when you hear or see the word Adelante, and want to immediately play the song, then we clearly have different tastes in music!) and will go out of my way to avoid them!

First Class service on this 222 was very attentive and friendly, I could not have asked for better, Maria was an absolute star! We got held up by a late running train from Corby, but thankfully the delay was not too bad. Once I eventually got through the crowds and to the street, which took some time, then it was into Kings Cross for some photos and into the lounge as boarding had not begun. So I picked up some shortbread for my sister, crisps for me and boarding had now begun. The lounge was very busy, so I'd have struggled to find a seat anyway. I tried that seat reservation system LNER uses, as you can do it up to 5 minutes before departure. It gave me coach K, seat 12, which would have to do. Off to platform 0 and I found the 1100 London Kings Cross to Edinburgh to be very busy, and my seat reservation didn't load. Thankfully a solo seat, facing the direction of travel, was available and it advised 'may be reserved later'. Which thankfully didn't happen before departure, and I disliked not being in coach M. I know it's silly, but it has a more exclusive feel to it! Which is being very petty and daft, I know!

Off on time and we stopped in the tunnel, this being the new one that opened during the 'Kings Cross uncrossed' layout rebuild a couple of years ago. A new bit for me then, happy days! Winner 801202 was on this service, non-stop to York, and I was wanting a good exploration of the seaside town that is Scarborough as the weather was incredibly nice on this day. A stark contrast to recent conditions! I suspect some of you reading this will already know what I would be doing later on! A Deli Box was enjoyed, that black olive stuff was smelly and tasted rancid. No fruit available, which was disappointing I must say. At some point in this trip report I'll make a league list of the best First Class I've had, already I think the results will be surprising! Spoiler Alert, this is at the end of Day 7 and it is very subjective!

3 minutes early into York, and that was likely to be my last LNER service of the adventure. That felt a bit strange! The First Class lounge in York is really nice, very busy on my visit so no photos. The next move was to be a pair of 185s on the 1317 to Scarborough, but first a coffee in the lounge! 185102+185129 were in charge of taking me to the Yorkshire coast, and I went for a seat in 185102. Honestly, I was feeling let down by First Class on 185s. When I did Stockport to Cleethorpes in First Class many years ago, it was quite nice on a 185. These days, it's some weird creamy coloured leather-style seats, with a firm headrest and the comfort in general was about the same as ScotRail Class 385 First Class! Very disappointing, thankfully on the way back out of Scarborough I was due a set of Mark 5 coaches led by a Class 68 diesel locomotive.

What makes this rather special is that Transpennine Express have got their Mark 5 First Class next to the locomotive, so this promised to be enjoyable. First though, I had to get to Scarborough and have a good walkabout before the 1534 to Manchester Victoria. I was staying in Winsford for two nights, and with London North Western Railway not due to serve the station all day, due to industrial action, I would need to get a bus from Crewe or Northwich. Given I was already committed to getting a takeaway in, as a thanks for putting me up, I did not want to get to my sister's house too late. So it was to be a relatively short day of travelling, but that was fine. I'd already done reasonably well, although I had not touched Greater Anglia and their Class 745s and I hadn't done a nice fast run on GWR to Devon. Those were two things I was disappointed to have not done, same for missing out on exploring York. All things that can be relatively easily done another time, of course.

Eventually, after a slow and boring journey, easily the worst of the entire adventure so far, I was off the train and I set off on a big walkabout of Scarborough. I started off going through the town centre, then down one of Scarborough's many steep hills to the seafront. Once I got to a cliff railway near the spa, I turned around and took on the route around the South Bay. The arcades and many of the takeaways being open surprised me a fair bit, I thought they'd all be shut for the winter by now. I next took on the hilly paths up to the castle, which although exhausting was totally worth the effort. With it being the first real exercise I'd had all day, it was good to finally get some movement done. Once I got to the North Bay, I had to start moving it a fair bit to make sure I got to the station in time for the train.

I managed to arrive with 15 minutes to spare, and I got some photos of the parked up Class 68s and Mark 5 sets. To my absolute delight, 68034 was a new sight, and even better was that the 1534 to Manchester Victoria had winner for sight 68029 on it! The Mark 5 First Class is much more comfortable, it appears to be the same seating as on the 397s but that's not a bad thing. I now wanted only 68023 to clear the class for sight! I sat as close to the 68 as possible, and the noise did not let me down. I took advantage of the time to move stuff around in my bags on this journey, and I got the news that the rail strikes had been cancelled with immediate effect. This pleased me no end! I decided the best thing to do was to see what time I got up on Day 6 and make some sort of plan from there. Not having to waste an entire day of my ALR was going to be nice! Spoiler Alert, Day 6 was not overly active!

With the way the buses were working to Winsford, it looked more sensible to just get a taxi from Crewe or Sandbach, a final decision was determined to get made once in Manchester, as there had been a Person Hit By Train incident in the Slaithwaite area earlier in the day. Disruption seemed quite possible, so it made no sense to plan too carefully! Due to many cancelled trains today, Standard Class was completely full, so I was rather glad to be in First Class! The noise 68029 made on departure from York was great, but the racket going through Morley Tunnel was just fantastic, phwoar! Arrival into Manchester Victoria was 6 minutes late at 1756, and after I finally got through the big crowds I got a fast march on. To Piccadilly!

Who turned the shower on in Manchester? That heavy rain was awfully unexpected! The First Class lounge at Manchester Piccadilly was rather welcome, and a coffee warmed me back up nicely. Quite a nice lounge, one that I was glad to visit, and whether or not it was just for this occasion but no catering was available on my journey from Scarborough. Thankfully, I had plenty of stuff from other journeys to keep me fed and watered. I had decided to go with what was showing as a Starship, better known as Class 323, on the 1858 to Crewe which I would take to Sandbach for a modest wait for a bus to Winsford town centre then walk up the road. The takeaway would be heavily delayed, but it was coming!

323233 was on the 1858 from Manchester, and as I settled in for the almost full journey, as Sandbach is the last stop before Crewe, I had time to reflect on the day. 3 Meridians scored, an Azuma as well as a 68, not too bad at all in the grand scheme of things. The journey on the 185s, well it wasn't great but it was good to return to Scarborough after many years, the exploring I would not have been able to do with others in my family! The 68 was good fun, and another two lounges done. Overall, it wasn't a lot of scores, but the First Class service on East Midlands Railway made up for that.

Mixing with the masses again sure felt weird, and there had not been enough Starship noise to make it worth it. Oh and I *still* had not got those Vitamin B supplements! The bus finally turned up at 2017, 9 minutes late, and £4 later I was on the way. A lot cheaper than a taxi, and a fair number of people on board for a semi-rural bus route in the late evening. It was rather chilly outside too, my hat and gloves came into their own in terms of being worth bringing along all week! All that was left now was the walk into the suburbs of Winsford and a late evening takeaway at my sister's house. So ended Day 5, what would Day 6 bring?

Attached are just some of the photos from Day 5, more to come soon. As are Days 6 and 7!

It's only taken to Day 5, but finally a proper train!

Rain in Manchester unexpected? Surely some mistake?!?

Enjoying reading about your exploits. Sounds like you've had a great week.

Scarborough is on my list for a decent explore at some point, a job for next year I suspect

Definitely recommended, I would have liked to do more but time wasn't with me.

Some more photos attached here, I have loads from Scarborough to come!

It's only taken to Day 5, but finally a proper train!

Rain in Manchester unexpected? Surely some mistake?!?

Enjoying reading about your exploits. Sounds like you've had a great week.

Normally it's nice weather when I'm in Manchester! Not always, granted, but I've not seen it as wet as that before!

Quite the interesting week all in, sadly the final two days weren't as good as the first 5 but that was mostly out of my hands. Still recovering from the week to be honest! Final two days are coming up soon :)

Apologies if I'm behind the times Tech, I just finished Day 2.

Funny you should say that about Tim Horton's not being the same in the UK, I've got the same theory about Starbucks- I like it in the US but not here. I can imagine the Highland Mainline looks great at that time of year and well done for doing it on a HST rather than an Azuma- much better for your posterior. I've also being eye-ing up the HST that does Aberdeen-Inverness. I was also impressed by the vastness of Union Square shopping centre when I also did a lap of it to kill some time and keep warm up there. Looked a great day, but ouch on the assumed lack of sleep before day 3!

Edit: Ah, I am very behind! I'll catch up on the rest when I can.

Not at all! I've stayed in a few over the last 18 months, and I've only really had one I wouldn't rush back to. Pretty much the sole reason being that the owners were smokers, but only smoked in either their front room or outside the front of the house... right underneath my window. Good intentions I suppose! Oh and I got locked in the loo in Belfast, so I got to meet the owner as a result-I'd just let myself in as it was late, he couldn't have been more apologetic and friendly had he tried. And right opposite a station, which is the main reason I booked it.

There's one in Teignmouth I've been to a couple of times now, that one's probably my favourite. A completely private en suite room, a lovely couple who seemed genuinely interested in what I was doing, and provided a decent cold breakfast tray each morning. As soon as the Okehampton line was announced as reopening properly, they'd apparently wondered straight away if they'd be seeing me again for it... and they did! The last one I stayed in was in Wexford, Ireland, a fair walk from the station unfortunately with taxi availability in the morning being non existent. The lady running that place had a box of Lindt chocolates on the table for me, and was pretty adamant I helped myself when I arrived. Couldn't say no.

Ah, Wexford....a wonderful town! (and not only for the trains running along the quay at 5 mph). I must admit to having helped myself to more than just a couple of Lindt chocolates in Wexford in the dim and distant past!

I've been to Wexford before. My first time leaving the UK since the "before times" last year. Sailed to Rosslare then got the train up to Wexford and fell in love with the place.

Well I'm glad all the airbnb apologies to happy. I don't like the concept either because you get individuals or indeed business people from the other side of the world buying up property that local should be living in and sticking it on the platform at vastly inflated prices for somewhat questionable service and buying a fleet of the aforementioned dreaded key lock boxes or it's someone doing what was intended with it and making a few quid out of their empty spare room while their teenage offspring is at uni or travelling round strange parts of the world drinking beer and growing a beard but whilst in principle is nothing wrong with this in practice it's it's so badly regulated both by the platform itself and by local authorities that the scope for it to go wrong and indeed some of the charges some people are levying is just eye-watering. The difference with the shared house in Crewe @Kite159 favours is that it is actually a proper registered accommodation business and it files accounts and complies with all health and safety laws on on fire evacuation and lots of other things.

100% of my Airbnb‘s have been great. And all of them have been holiday properties previously let out by other means, but much more flexibly via Airbnb.

And I do like using that shared house, very comfy with hardly any outside noise and less than 10 minutes from Crewe station. A shame the Sainsburys Local closed along the way as that did come in handy as an easy detour to grab breakfast items on a Sunday morning.

Although it is a key lock box on the room with a digital access lock on the outside, where the codes are texted/emailed to you on the day of the day. Ideal for when I arrive after 10pm from the 19:46 Crewe LNR service, which is one thing which does limit my accommodation choices as some Air BnBs do have more restrictive times where you can arrive [similar to some independent places]. I might look at Air BnB for the future to see if anything interesting pops up.

----

As for Air BnB style places, I think the only place I've used which is a spare room within a house with the family living downstairs was in Swansea (which had 2 rooms available to stay).

Oh good, I am not the only one then! There's some real gems out there, a lot of people taking financial advantage and all that too by the sounds of it. Being selective and only choosing the places with genuine hosts is the way forward, not easy to do but I've already decided since the Inverness stay to be very fussy with my selections. Quite, my next need of accommodation in January is not Airbnb but Premier Inn. A bargain at £37.50, no way was I turning that down!

I've been out on a Gran Fondo ride today, so no trip report editing has been done, but I am attaching a few more photos from Day 5 while I'm here. Still plenty more to come!

@Iskra I forgot to quote your post, but I am glad to hear you're enjoying the read :) The lack of sleep was not great, but it is what it is. It led me to being more fussy with my accommodation choices, so that's a good thing. Starbucks in the USA I've only done a couple of times, but I haven't really noticed a huge difference to be honest. What I do like about Starbucks in the UK is that they do vegan food, Tim Hortons is rather anti-vegan!

Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate why people don't like AirBnB. And disagree strongly with landlords using it in touristic areas as a means to push prices up.

But as for renting out a spare room, as it was originally intended, I'm all for it. With regards to fire safety and the like, if the owners are on site then they're clearly happy with it all, or else they surely wouldn't live there.

Lockboxes aren't necessarily a bad thing either. The one I went to in Teignmouth has a Lockbox, which I've used the grand total of once in a total stay of about 9 nights. The owners were away until the day I arrived, so they left me the keys in the Lockbox so I could leave my bag. I wouldn't feel particularly comfortable staying in a shared property if the owners weren't there personally.

I have to agree, it's a bit strange being in a shared property on your own! Not necessarily bad if you like peace and quiet, but still a bit strange. The jury is out when it comes to lock boxes personally, they have their uses for sure but I haven't decided if it's a good or bad thing.

Some more photos from Day 5 attached, I've now been through Day 6 and that will be up before too long. Day 7 needs a thorough re-write, it reads too much like a diary than a trip report! Spoiler Alert, Day 7 does not end in the style which I'd originally pictured!
