Corosion from acidic water in the origanal 1970s jubilee line tunnels has got so bad that they're being 'retunneled'. This video from the BBC explains that they'll be repairing the tunnels throughout several closures spread from this summer to 2015.

Passengers on the Jubilee Line face at least 30 days of disruption, spread over two years, due to repair work to tunnels.

Stations between Finchley Road and Waterloo will be affected by the work on tunnel linings to repair the damage caused by acidic groundwater.

Transport for London said the work is planned for weekends and public holidays.

BBC London's Marc Ashdown spoke with Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly group, and Nigel Holness from London Underground.

In the Evening Standard on Monday there were quite a few people calling for this work to be done in a single long blockade during August; I have to say I agree with them.

I disagree; whilst some people might be lucky enough to get a whole month off work, for most of us August is still a working month like the rest, and the Jubilee line is a vital route for many to access their employment, the majority of which takes place on Monday to Friday.

I agree with Mojo. The biggest problem with long blockades is freeing up staff to attend to them, while ensuring the regular maintenance that they'd otherwise be doing gets done.

Don't most of the journey options offered via the Jubilee have alternative routes available, albeit I admit they take a bit longer?

And may potentially be a lot more crowded too. My alternative to the Jubilee line would be via Victoria station, and the Victoria line, the former of which is already at capacity.

I think there's also an issue with having peak time turnback at Waterloo- basically they couldn't actually run an intense enough service on the eastern part of the line, which would lead to dangerous overcrowding on the station platforms

Out of the stations affected, it's only St. John's Wood and Swiss Cottage passengers which would be the most affected, but they have local bus routes which would connect them to Baker Street.

Finchley Road has the Met for Jubilee passengers to change over to Baker Street, while the Bakerloo would be a substitute for those in the Zone 1 section to travel between Baker St and Waterloo to rejoin the line to Stratford.

and that's what people will have to do- during the off-peak closures. That wouldn't work during peak commuting hours due to sheer weight of numbers
