Hi Guys.

I'm looking to travel from London to Wolverhampton in the Easter Holidays. I looked on the Internet and the quickest way there is via Virgin Trains, however I do not fancy spending 2 hours on a Pendoclaustrophobico.

However there is another option to go via Chiltern to Birmingham Moor Street then take the Midland Metro to Wolverhampton. Does anyone know how likely I am to get LHCS and at what times, because I'd prefer these to a Pendo any day.

One last question which do you guys reckon would be better for money.

You could also use London Midland to Birmingham or get FGW to Reading and then go from Reading to Birmingham on XC.

Can't help you with regard to Chiltern LHCS timing but having done the line from Marylebone to Birmingham (Snow Hill) and also having used the Midland Metro, I would probably recommend, if you did this route, to walk from Moor Street to New Street and to get either an LM or XC train to Wolverhampton - probably quicker than the Midland Metro and IMO, better.

You'd have to check but there is a possibility that a standard return to Wolverhampton could be valid by both WCML or Chiltern lines - I did it from Stafford a couple of years back and routing via WCML (standard way) or forcing it go via Moor St (or other station on that line) revealed no difference in ticket price - although I think it raised a few eyebrows!

The time difference between the Metro and the train is about 10 minutes, if you intend to get the metro you'd be better off going to Snow Hill than Moor St since the Metro departs from the former and New St is closer to Moor St than Snow Hill is to Moor St

If you plan to arrive in the West Midlands after 9:30am then I'd go with the Network Daytripper for £5.50 which gives bus, train and metro travel in the West Midlands area. If you choose this option you can get a train from London to Dorridge or Solihull (Chiltern) or Coventry (LM). This would be better value than the £4.40 BHM - WVH ticket (beware of the cheaper £3.20 - this is VT only!) if you intend to travel throughout the west midlands.

I don't think there is much difference between the Chiltern Clubman and the LM 350s, if anything I'd pick the Chiltern route for the sheer hell of it and the lower chance of delay. Prices are much the same as are journey times


I don't know what an LHCS is let alone whether you'll get one with Chiltern.


edit: The Metro will drop you off closer to the City Centre than the train although there is a Wetherspoon's near the station
