Dont think ive really had a journey from hell. Been on a number of charters that been badly delayed though. The following 3 are trips that stand out in the memory.
1. Dec 1999: A Skipton-Edinburgh green express tour. Outward fine, got into Edinburgh early. return departed 60L after problems with the stock at Millerhill, then after the crew-change at Newcastle, the driver discovered 47732 was low on fuel & at Durham got looped until 47746 arrived from Newcastle to take the train forward, arriving home 2+ hours late.
2. Jan 2001: What should have been a simple halfday excursion from London Victoria-Southampton Docks behind 73108 was delayed heavly at Woking on the return after a major signal failure. After 73108 ranround, 73109 was added & the train went back to Basingstoke, where the locos then ran round & then went via Reading, then down the GWML, returning to Victoria via Kenny O, arriving at about 0200 I think it was. Taxis were arranged for passengers going beyond London, Newton Abbot was the furthest I can remember.
3. Mar 2000: 56115 returning to Crewe from Carlisle via the S&C then train was then delayed at Blackburn for nearly 3 hours for a tempory headlight to arrive from Preston in a taxi.
All part of the fun.
