I've been trying to get some sense out of a TOC, but they don't seem to understand my question which is:

I will be buying a cheap day return from Sheffield to Bradford and back via Leeds. On the way back I wish to break my journey at Wakefield Westgate. So far so good.

However, some trains (e.g. Leeds to Kings Cross) stop at Westgate but don't go to Sheffield, can I still use my return ticket to Sheffield as far as Westgate on (e.g.) the Kings Cross train?

Thanks :)

Yes, that's perfectly permitted. You don't have to solely catch trains that call at the destination printed on your ticket, in fact many journeys would be impossible if this were a rule! You can take any train along any permitted route. Permitted routes for Sheffield to Bradford include via Wakefield and therefore what you propose is perfectly permissible.

Many thanks for your reply.

It turned out that I got the earlier Penzance train from Leeds (rather than the Kings Cross one) which went on to call at Sheffield anyway, so I just broke my journey at Wakefield as normal.
