All Our Yesterdays – 55 Years Ago –December 1962

Diesel and Electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops with Doncaster building class 85 electrics, Horwich building class 08’s, Derby building class 46 “Peaks” and class 52 Westerns being built at Crewe and Swindon. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Beyer Peacock at Manchester were building class 35 Hymek’s, Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough and the Clayton Equipment Co. Derby were building class 17’s.

New locomotives:
Class 08 – D4154/55/56/57
Class 17 – D8512/13
Class 35 – D7060/61/63
Class 37 – D6783/84/85/86/87/97/98/99, D6800/01
Class 46 – D188
Class 47 – D1503
Class 52 – D1013 Western Ranger, D1014 Western Leviathan, D1046 Western Marquis, D1048 Western Lady, D1049 Western Monarch
Class 85 – E3074

The effect of the steady delivery of diesel locomotives through 1962 was really starting to be felt by the steam fleet when withdrawals increased from three hundred and twenty four in November 1962 to an unprecedented six hundred and twenty three steam locomotives condemned in December. Notable amongst the withdrawals were another eighteen LNER Pacifics including the first five Greasley A4’s 60003/14/28/30/33, twenty five LMS Royal Scot 4-6-0’s, thirteen LMS Jubilee 4-6-0’s and the remaining seventeen SR Schools 4-4-0’s. A start was also made on the LMS Stanier Black Fives with thirteen condemned but the most surprising withdrawals were the five BR Standard Clan class Pacifics 72000/01/02/03/04 built only eleven years earlier in December 1951 and January 1952. Apart from one BR Standard 4MT withdrawn in August 1962 and the unique Duke of Gloucester 8P Pacific last month, the Clan class withdrawals were the first real attack on the BR Standard fleet and really signified that the end of steam on British Railways was fast approaching. At least three of those locomotives withdrawn escaped the cutter’s torch and still exist today

A number of the above were photographed later in life (including two of the steam withdrawals) and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – December 1967

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see two further locomotives from the final batch of Class 20’s and three Class 50’s delivered.

New Locomotives
Class 20 – D8321/22
Class 50 – D401/02/04

The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

D5597

Glasgow works was undertaking rebuilds of the North British Type 2 (Class 21) with a new Paxman 12YJXL engine with the final three being completed this month;

D6100/19/24

Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from one hundred and sixteen to eighty two. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form the majority the monthly withdrawals. In the month twenty five Black Fives, seventeen 8F’s and thirty one BR Standards (including thirteen Britannia Pacific 4-6-2’s) were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with thirty eight locomotives condemned. A start was made on the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleet this month with the withdrawal of all five North British Warships (D600), six Metro-Vic Co-Bo’s (Class 28), two Swindon Type 1’s (Class 14), and a North British Type 2 (Class 22). The rebuilding of the North British Type 2 (Class 21) with a new Paxman 12YJXL engine was curtailed and thirty of the remaining un-rebuilt engines condemned. Finally a fire damaged Class 24 was also withdrawn. At least two of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.

In the month seventy seven steam locomotives were withdrawn, thirty four being over fifty years old with North Eastern Railway J77 Class 0-6-0T 68397 being the oldest, having entering traffic in May 1875 and condemned eighty two years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older secondary main line and branch line passenger engines, steam shunting engines and old freight engines being displaced by the continued delivery of the Standards, Diesel Multiple Units and diesel shunting engines. As the older engines were withdrawn the number of post grouping engines condemned was starting to increase with twenty three locomotives condemned. built post the 1923 grouping.

A number I have photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome
