For the most part you don't need to do any courses to get onto the railway, the operating companies will train you to the required standard. There are a lot of ex forces on the railway and managers like them for obvious reasons, discipline, used to doing as they're told, use of safety critical communications, teamwork, following rules etc so definately play up your army experience. I am not sure how it works for trackworkers and engineers, someone else on here will probably know a bit though. For roles within your local operator just keep checking their website (daily) and get applying. Plenty of opportunity for promotion once you're inside as well.

Hi mate,
In the old BR days, it used to be a natural progression to leave the forces and join the railway but it's a bit more difficult now. Add to the fact that the railway companies are shedding jobs. My best advice is to register your details with specialist, i.e railway recruitment agency's. One of them may take a punt on you and sponsor you for PTS training. Otherwise, just keep applying for every job you see. Railwaypeople.com is a good start.
Good luck and all the best!
