Say "hypothetically" i was given a job offer by a TOC as a trainee train driver and iv passed my medical and references and iv signed my contract and sent it back, but my start date is in a few months

How much could go wrong between now and then and what are the chances the job role could get pulled

is it due to filling class numbers or could there be any other reason

Probably filling the class.
Surely once you've signed the contract (depending on the wording) then they can't really break that. Sure, they could give you a notice period straight away but that isn't going to happen realistically.

The only reason you'll go wrong, I imagine, is if you fail the tests in the classroom or such like....?
