I think some people take themselves and what Clarkson says to seriously...... he made the comment about truckers murdering prositutes... was i offended? No! Did i laugh when he said it? Yes! Have i met any other truckers who were offended (and i know an awfull lot of them) er No!

Some people just need to take what he says with a pinch of salt and realise its a joke!

But he only said it to try and "add balance", as he joked because the BBC has to do it while many commercial channels do not. It was the extreme opposite of what he said first, so why is that being forgotten or deliberately ignored?

It was a wind up, and even the first bit was a joke too as places were in fact very busy, like shops and cinemas. I believe the economy possibly got a boost from this strike!

If you actually read what he said word for word, it is remarkable to see how far this whole thing has been blown so far out of proportion: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15993549

Watching ITV News tonight, I was actually quite disgusted to see how they broadcast the cut clip completely out of context. Not that I expected anything better from them...

Thats so true. There's been alot worse said on the telli than the stuff Clarkson comes out with. Like Frankie Boyle. he's come out with some far worse stuff live on telly.

I know plenty of people who were on strike on Wednesday. Did they take offence to what Clarkson said? No! Did they take it as a joke? Yes! Will they be hunting him down with a pitchfork? No!

Why always Clarkson? Theres plenty of other motormouths out there, indeed like the comedians who say offensive stuff. Are people up in arms? Most of the time no! So why Clarkson? The comedians stuff is said in fun, but so is his!

Theres always stuff about offensive things being said and dangerous stuff being done on Top Gear, people are always up in arms over it. Why? It makes Top Gear what it is, its why its so good. Its just a bunch of guys larking around, making a joke, having fun. Just like some guys down the pub. How can anyone say it shouldn't be like it? How can anyone reckon it was better before when it was all serious?

Anyway thats just my 2p on Clarkson and Top Gear.

In my opinion, Top Gear is the best programme on British telivision, there is nothing better than it. And as for Clarkson, he's only having a bit of fun, a joke. So leave the man be.

What planet is Clarkson living on?

I bet he doesn't have to worry about his pension.

I think he should be sacked and made to do a rather demeaning job with low wages.

The man doesn't live in the real world & is such a prat!

I don't understand all the fuss.

If anyone cares to watch the full clip, rather thsn the selecively edited version it is clearly meant as a joke!! It goes something like 'I completely agree with the strikers, fully back them..... but of course this is the BBC so I have to be impartial, I'd have them all shot.'

Maybe it wasn't the brightest thing to say, but it makes Clarkson no worse than some 'comedians' who have joked about far worse.

Er, why should he be sacked? He appeals to some people's taste. (Not mine, I hasten to add.) I don't like the fact that some sliver of my licence fee goes in his pocket, but then there are reams of the BBC I never touch, hear or see.

It was a joke. Not a funny one, but it was a joke.

Some people have no sense of perspective whatsoever.

AlterEgo, Jeremy Clarkson only cares about himself & doesn't think about what he says & if anyone thinks this is funny, then they are as bad as Clarkson.

Bet if some unfunny comedian like Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr or Jonathon Ross had said it there would not be this much publicity about it. If it had been said in a sitcom, would people have lauhjed about it?
Jezza is hated by the media because he speaks his mind. Leave the legend alone.

If Clarkson's comment was intended as a joke it was totally unfunny. If it was supposed to be serious it was grossly offensive.

What context where the suicide comments made in?

That's what he should he should have been chastised for. ;)

The vast majority of people though, even in this thread, are only talking about what he said about Strikers being shot, a comment which has been taken completely out of context.

I can't tell you how pleased I am to see someone who isn't a JC fan take his side in the argument.

Hmm, but remember what happened to Jonathan Ross @ the BBC

I honestly think that it was different to send an offensive message to someone, as against saying something as an obvious joke to nobody in particular (well, unless we believe he was going to round up every striker!).

Given it was the second bit of a comment, which had started by saying he liked the strike and explained he HAD to say something bad for balance, there is no comparison at all.

Nor can it be compared to Emma West on the tram, as that was a personal attack on people and she clearly meant what she said.

As I said on Digital Spy, what is amazing is how many people are calling for blood with Clarkson, yet a large number of people are defending Emma West by saying she was probably drunk or high on drugs, or suffers some mental condition, and therefore she didn't fully understand what she was doing and perhaps shouldn't be held responsible. That's far more outrageous in my view.

Last night, I listened to a Professor of Media talking about Clarkson on 5 Live. He demonstrated his views perfectly. Clarkson is not a journalist and he's not a news reader, he's an entertainer. He's not there to be dressed up in a suit and tie reading out the headlines like some graduate of journalism, he's there to be funny, he's there to be provocative and he's there to make you laugh! If you think Clarkson is an old, controversial idiot then you are entitled to your opinion but please bear in mind that in doing so you are missing the whole point of this man!!! He is there to be provocative! He is there to be amusing! That's what he does, and if I may say so he's bloody brilliant at it! I know loads of people who work in the public sector, they had absolutely no problem with what he said. Clarkson will go down a legend, an iconic figure of British television.

As Chuka Umunna (sp?) put it perfectly: what's the point? What's the point of being rude and controversial? If he had a massive MI tomorrow (he's not a slim man!) the person who picks him up will be a public sector worker. The people at the PPCI will be a public sector worker. And he's gone and suggested that they should be executed in front of their families.

Saying public sector works are work shy layabouts who sponge off the taxpayer is controversial. Saying that they should be rounded up and shot in front of their families is disgusting. Replace 'public sector workers' with any other section of the population and he probably would have been sacked!

Having said that I did think UNISON went a bit far with calling for his prosecution.

What's the point in being controversial? Well, if that's the case I won't even bother switching on my televesion tonight. More or less everything we see on TV has some sort of controversy attached to it. More or less everything we see on television gives somebody sitting in the corner a reason to ring up the BBC and complain! I've seen people writing in to complain about presenters not tucking their shirts in. Why? Because they have nothing else better to do.

In answer to the Right Honourable MP, the point of being controversial is for him to make money! End of!

OK, to anyone who is making comments based only on what is on youtube, watch the whole thing,

"And of course this is the BBC so we have to bring balance" and if you listen to what the idiot from Unison says she oviously missed this...

Unison are a bunch of idiots anyway, they don't tend to have their members' intrests at heart and will go around using their massive membership numbers as an instrument of the TUC to try and bully the goverment and large orginisations into doing what the union leaders want, not what the union members want, just look at the conditions for most Unison members compared with most Unite (Amacus) members...

PS: Guess my union... Wasn't out on stike on wednesday.

Don't any of the members of the union say anything controversial then? No personal attacks on politicians, the rich or the bankers then?

@ralphchadkirk - did you hear the WHOLE conversation? Did you hear the bit he said before saying that it was the BBC and so he had to say the exact opposite for balance?

I'm glad we allow people to share all views on our media though, given how I was in Las Vegas and watched Fox (big mistake) and they had three people on talking about Obama - and ALL thre of them were slagging him off and it was nothing more than you'd expect to hear in a bar full of republicans! No balance whatsoever - and totally pointless to watch whether you were pro or anti-Obama!

Yes, I did hear the full interview. Saying they should be shot does not provide a bit of balance. It's being rude just to get in the papers. A bit of balance would have been if he had said that he did not support the strike.

I'm well aware he meant it as a joke (however in poor taste) and I'm well aware some people will find it funny. I didn't find it funny. In my opinion good humour is intelligent humour, not just being rude.

Another example of Clarkson redressing the balance

"Alegedly the BBC has been over promoting Peter Manleson's new book this week, well lets redress that balance. Don't buy it!"

And HST_Power, my office sent last sent me something about saving jobs at BAE Systems, and that was the last mailout I got from them, nothing on these TUC lead strikes populated by the UCU, NASWT etc, who always seem to walk out in sympathetic strike, whatever the cause.

Oh, and when I had a massive pay and conditions cut, no-one bothered doing anything.
When HGV driver's wages got cut from £25 to £8/hr, no-one did anything

And now, 4 years after starting training for a post that would pay £28 - £35k during professional training, this has now dropped to £18 - £25k no-one marched for that either! (That is lower in private than public sector, traditionally lower in the public sector)

I thought the best line from a Prime Minister ever was when he tried to claim that the strikes were a "damp squib" given that the London Ambulance Service (amongst others) had less than half their usual vehicles working, over 100 patients in the call queue and had to have support from the Met Police in order to attain the bare minimum standard.

Oh the joys, I'd have loved to have gone on strike when I was working for the crown, you could just imagine a picket line outside camp bastion or the City of London Garrison?
