Rail maintenance company Jarvis has announced that it will go into administration after lenders refused to offer the company further credit.

Jarvis said its creditors were now not prepared to offer it the money it needed to continue as a going concern.

The company has seen big reductions in its business since the beginning of the recession in 2008.

Jarvis said it had no option but to enter administration, and had asked for its shares to be suspended.

Oh dear. Yet another badly run company with a poor business model fails to stem the tide.

Just as an aside, this company deals with rail maintainance, yes? So, the recession has led to less of the railway needing to be maintained?

Strikes me that one of two things have happened here. Either standards have improved to such an extent that work is not as necessary or maintainance levels have been lowered, which is a very dangerous situation to be in.

I believe it is to do with Network Rail doing more work in house, that's what Jarvis were crying about anyway (poor, poor shareholders).

Feel for the staff though, but I imagine some will get jobs with the other infrastructure companies who will benefit if Jarvis go to the wall.

They also run Fastline Freight who do a lot of coal traffic, especially out of Daw Mill. I think they were also down as the contractor for Evergreen 3 ??

Think so, BBC News reported that they had "won a £55 Million contract with Chiltern Railways" but that it was not enough.

Very few jobs available as all companies in this area feeling the cuts from Network Rail

Just wait until the next government. Jarvis is a good demonstration of what happens when you cut public spending. Many companies may be private, but just how many are dependent on public funds? Those big government IT projects, or public works, advertising and so on. Not only that, in some areas of the country, where there is a lot of public sector workers, when they get laid off, this will affect spending in shops and so on in those locations.

Go read the various RAIB reports. The answer is there loud and clear and shouting its voice off.

I don't know, there we have people in this forum saying they feel sorry for the Jarvis employees because near on 1,500 staff will lose there jobs and yet in a previous thread about the Network rail dispute, people are saying well if Network Rail need to sack rather then them sitting on their arses all day then so they should.

Is it because the union wont be able to organise any industrial action so therefore not being able to shut the system down, so people feel sorry for them, and because in Network Rail and as people keep harking on about 54% voted for strike action (in my eyes its a majority no matter what others may say, as i am sure you would expect the union not to go on strike if it had been 54% against strike action) so the union have decided to carry out the instructions of the membership and have strike action.

I think apart from some people in this forum, none of you give a you know what if it especially affects you personally. You will whinge and moan about that old chestnut called Bob Crow living in the dark days, yet when the union cant do nothing about job loses its 'oh i feel sorry for them' Sympathy NO! Hypocrisy YES!

Bob Crow gets a bad press, but he has to defend jobs in the industry, given the thousands who have left over the past three years (With very little said about it)
Network Rail make a lot of noise about record investment........ask the ex infrastructure workers about that!

How, NR are taking (nearly) everything back in-house (and are getting rid of 1500 workers at the same time, work that out) so where are the jobs?

Im so Glad that other people are thinking that way. Network rail are taking all its work "In House" and this is mentioned daily to us. So with Network rail cutting the Maintenance workers and then placing the majority of who remain onto nights to do the projects work, just who will be doing the daily maintenance patrols. Looking for those troublesome loose bolts, Bent stretcher bars and of course broken rails should remain the priority of Network Rail.

"In House" is a cynical misnomer for cheap labour agencies.

Every re-organisation has been driven by money and the output has always been the removal of experienced staff and their replacement by "Microwave Dinner" type "engineers", who have little if any understanding of the Railway, because they are cheaper and more compliant to the type of infrastructure Manager that Network Rail now employ. Brash, loudmouth, inevitably from any Industry or walk of life but the Railway, and who stand out by their complete lack of social and interpersonal management skills.

Its a desperate shame, and a disgrace that Jarvis has collapsed, and entirely down to Network Rail's spitefulness and hidden plans to take renewals in house - i.e. to use cheap non-English speaking labour hired in from labour agencies who will pay them a pittance, make them pay for what little training they will get, and give them the cheapest of the cheap PPE.

Network Rail are completely incapable of undertaking Projects and renewals work having neither the ability, capability or intellectual capacity to manage them. Bonus-hungry commercial managers and those who have no clue as to what they are taking on are driving this, and now they have succeeded with a plan I forecast back in 2002. The one are not to be in future days will be the former Jarvis renewals area once NR take over the workbank and start to do it themselves.

They will (eventuallly) learn that it is one thing to dismantle and re-assemble the Hornby train set track in the meeting room, and something completely different to do in real life.

We have already seen the results of early small renewals jobs they have done. All have been disasters of historic proportions, completely foreseable to everyone but them, and when the inevitable over-run appears they stand there like rabbits in car headlights unable to comprehend what is going on or how to get themselves out of it :roll:

I think someone like colas will snap up the work they are the largest on track machine operators plus they can cover the freight work or maybe balfours for the tamping work. just my opinion but i think balfours and colas will get all on track work then it will be easy for network rail to take it back in house.

Just got a staff brief advising that due to Jarvis going into administration, some engineering work this Sunday will be cancelled but due to the short notice, the replacement buses and altered train services will run as booked.

Kings Cross to Peterborough services will now call at Arlesey and Hitchin in both directions though and the FCC website as well as the CIS screens at stations plus National Rail Enquires have been advised of this.

Just so all are aware of this.

No surprise there, then. Same applies to: NHS; Civil Service; Education management, And those are only the ones I have direct experience of.
Except, of course, we voted in 1997 for this to happen to MPs as well....

Hi all im new on here, just thought i'd put my ten pence worth into your forum.
Im an ex Jarvis employee, i had ten years service upto last may when i got made redundant following the end of the Rugby remodelling project. I was lucky enough to get my dues from the company and move on.
Guess where i moved on to?
Well i had a year out, scratching around from one company to the next doing shifts here and there for an array of rail companys.............then?
Then i get the call.................."come and sub for jarvis rail on the evergreen", "we will give you two years work". I jumped in, did 2 weeks 3 days work at Gerrards Cross and then............Jarvis go bump!
The rail is a bad place to be at the moment if you just want to earn a decent days pay for a decent days work. I don't want to get into the ins and outs of Jarvis and network rails problems. I just worry that goverment expenditure is being cut and the safety of the pway is at risk.
Anyway, tell me your views pway staff?
Take care all
Up the villa!
