Maybe someone has got too close to carry out "permanant final revenge" to this Venables chap and he is taken into protective custody?? Jeez, I have been watching The Sopranos and The Godfather too many times.
In this case though, revenge would have been sweet!!

Or maybe he hasn't been taken into custody at all, but it was leaked to the media that he has been. Or maybe I have been watching too much 24 ;)

One of our drivers is an ex- Police Officer who's team was involved in the Bulger case, a lot more happened to poor Jamie than was ever revealed in the press at the time, the details of which were thought far too horrific to publish. Those two animals went out of their way to harm a child, any child they could lay their hands on. Lets not forget that they picked on Jamie because their first intended victim that day was saved by an adult.... they knew exactly what they were doing then tried to cover up their crime. Once caught and interviewed, each tried to lay the blame on the other.

I can't type anymore, I can feel my blood pressure rising.

That is the point I was making earlier. People need to let it go - horrific as it was, it was almost 20 years ago now.

If someone was to say "It's time to let the holocaust go, it was over 60 years ago now" then that person would be in for some serious abuse!

Probably. But it doesn't work as an analogy so it doesn't matter.

Though there are those who argue we should stop prosecuting the war criminals as they're now mostly senile old men who can't remember what they did.

Best we make them rememeber then! Such people should not have the luxury of "memory loss"

I'm not quite sure what you mean. If they are in such a state that they really cannot remember what use is there in punishing them other than as revenge?

Let Venables' identity be revealed then release him to the public.

He should suffer a thousand times more than poor little Jamie did.

He wasn't even called Jamie. You have bought right into what the media tell you.

Could you explain why he should suffer a thousand times more than James did, and why you consider that to be justice rather than vengeance?

That's quite a naive comment to make. With the right connections (and maybe a few quid), even I could find out his new name.

Why do you stick up for him?

Stick up for him? Are you actually reading what is being typed or just guessing?

I am reading what both of you are writing and I am finding a hard time understanding both of your arguments. However for the sake of conversational value, I respect your opinions even if I don't agree with them.

You have to remember that this is a guy who, when 10 years old, tortured and killed a 2 year old with his friend. If recent press reports are to be believed, he has not changed since his release and proves that in this instance, leopards do not change their spots if true. We can all hope that people change as they grow up and if they are institutionalised then they can learn and change. Maybe Thompson has and Venables has not.

I hope the truth does come out so we can all make an informed decision rather than relying on the speculation in the press. I for one hope that another child has not had to suffer at the hands of this man.

The kids who killed the toddler might have been abused themselves, causing them to be like this, because no normal 10 Year old boys are like this.

Exactly - but I still do not believe the decision to release them after eight years was wrong. And I do not believe in the vengeance approach that some on this thread have expressed.

Let's have a look at what these 10 year olds did?
They hit the child so hard that the Pathologist could not determine which blow killed poor James.
They hit him with an iron bar, bricks and stones.
They stuffed batteries in his mouth.

Are these normal 10 year olds?
do you think they were born not normal, or made a choice to be not normal, or abused?

If your parents are rich, you don't become a business success and rich too. If you are poor, you don't stay poor. Look at poorly educated examples like Sir Richard Branson. People who are abused, don't automatically become abusers, just as abusers haven't always suffered abuse. I have a long standing friendship with someone who suffered terrible abuse, they are the kindest, most thoughtful and caring person I know. The pyschiatrists and lawyers will not be happy until they have labelled every choice, action and reason as a syndrome, then we can all claim diminished responsibility for a crime. My feelings towards the Bulger case have no merit to the discussion.
On a different note, at a time when the media are being warned about all of the disclosures made, the Sunday Mirror have alleged it is on child porn charges that Venables has been returned to custody.

I sincerely hope there is some truth in this if they've chosen to publish it. I feel deep down, it is a ploy for us to get the pitchforks out, and light our torches and march upon the prison, Frankenstein movie style.

My post was in response to Osywintail, who said that it was a "bad choice" as part of growing up. What I think is neither here nor there. I was only saking a question.

Helps if you read the whole topic Yorkie, rather than just picking on things.

I have read the whole topic (how do you know if I have or haven't? am I expected to write an essay on it?) I just asked you a question, which you have not answered, and it is your right to choose not to answer it if you don't want to, but as you yourself said "I was only asking a question"

I don't think the question is fair.

I quote Mumrar's excellent post:

So you think that 10 year olds boys make a "choice", as that's what you have quoted (in the final sentence)?

In that case, while people believe that, the cycle will continue. There will be more 10 year olds doing this (see case in Doncaster) because we do not address the problem. The kids may well be evil (I'm not saying they aren't) but while people believe they chose to be evil, and do not address why they became evil, we're doomed to yet more of these sad cases occurring.

If society lets people who are totally and utterly unsuitable to raise a child do so, and those people abuse them, torture them, and raise them to believe that evil acts are both normal and right, and then society does absolutely nothing against the person raising the child and blames the child for choosing to be evil, then the results are, sadly, predictable. :( I wish there would be no more cases like this, but there will be.

I thought you would have noticed - I didn't actually answer your question. The point of a quote was to say that people who are abused, aren't automatically abusers.

Choices can be influenced, so while it can be a choice, an external factor may have influenced the choice. So while it is a choice, there still can be a cause.

I already read that point, why repeat it? I'm not disagreeing with it, although the way it was put had a lot of spin on it!

Let's not beat about the bush. There is no "may" or "can be" about it in these cases. If someone is brought up to be evil, that person is going to do something very bad (not as bad as in these cases usually) and it is wrong IMO that the of the lynch mob newspapers never seem to even mention the parents, let alone place any of the blame on them. It's so easy for them to say these 10 year olds are evil but it appears to be too hard for them to look into why they became evil.
