i though it could have been a decent money saver to keep one station in the old look and use all the ripped out parts from the others to replace any bad pannels.

I remember visiting Hamilton Square as a trainspotting youth in the 60s, and could not believe the intensity of the service. Signalling was manually operated colour lights and I recall this very small box was where the then Rock Ferry line split from the Birkenhead Central line. The old 1938 - 1956 came out from Central to Hamilton Square every 2 1/2 minutes, thus a train passed every 75 seconds. That was some service and some control. Rock Ferry trains were every 5 minutes, as were Birkenhead Central trains, splitting every 10 to West Kirby or New Brighton. Only Baker St on the Met and Circle beat that!

You may find this diagram helps with getting your head around the layout. it's for a proposed extension to the system but if you ignore the proposed bits in red it's handy.

Is this link line an active proposal or just someone's wish list?

Does anyone know of anywhere good rail maps and/or station plans for Merseyrail can be acquired for reading interest? Or even decent books on Merseyrail?

@eps200 The link that should have happened, but didn't because of 80s Anti Rail policies was the link south of Central into Wapping Tunnel, to emerge just south of Edge Hill. When studying in the 70s, all the PTEs sent me their plans except Murkeyside. But I have followed Merseyside and through connections having made the acquaintance of both Neil Scales and Mark Dowd. The DfT have been really remiss at not promoting small extensions. Those 508s they've just scrapped would have fitted the bill, and Merseyside paid for them once.
So next time you are on a train going south from Central, look out of the window and you should see where provision was made for the link west. The problem of Ormskirk and Kirkby trains terminating at Central could have been eliminated. Also there is a disused station under Parliament Street, that needs restoring.
