I have been researching JLR's facilities before I start working for them. I know they export from Halewood (Merseyside) and Castle Bromwich by rail but given these together only account for about 20% of their production and Solihull producing the other 80% do they have rail facilities here?

What sort of volume's leave these facilities by rail and what prohibits more from doing so?

Is most car production in the UK transported to port in similar proportions by rail to JLR or are they ahead of or behind the market?

On here we're forever saying freight needs to be regular flows and medium to long distance so car assembly plant to deep sea port fits the bill perfectly.

The Solihull works doesn't have a rail connection, and although is about a mile from the Leamington - Tyseley route, there are lots of houses in the way. It is a couple of miles from the WCML at International, and a link to there was looked at quite seriously in the 1990s. Ultimately though it would have cost too much, and getting long freight trains on and off what would have been a relatively slow connection would have taken up too much capacity.

So despite Solihull being by far JLR's largest facility everything for export goes by road from there or do they just take it by road to the Castle Bromwich railhead?

I don't know the exact numbers, but Solihull is far lower than 80% of their production anyway, seeing that Halewood produces the smaller, best selling LR vehicles likes RR Evoque and the LR Freeelander/Discovery Sport.
At the moment Solihull produces the larger LR/RR vehicles, though output is rising significantly due to the new Jaguar XE going into production there.

BMW use rail to transport some MINIs from Oxford, while Ford use rail to export engines from Dagenham

I was, seemingly wrongly, going off what this wikipedia page says:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_industry_in_the_United_Kingdom#Assembly_plants

It says Castle Bromwich combined produce 54,030 vehicles and Solihull produces 234,647 vehicles with Halewood's figures bizarrely being included in those numbers.

Maybe Halewood is the major production site then and the figures are skewed because of this.

After clicking the reference it appears the 54k relates to Jaguars and the 234k relates to Land/Range Rovers.
