Last Monday I travelled from Sheffield up to Glasgow via Leeds, Settle & Carlisle.
My last leg from Carlisle was the 13:52 ex Preston [Delayed a few minutes by a fire alarm evacuation at Carlisle]. I am aware of the temporary closure of the WCML between Preston & Warrington meaning the only Virgin Trains services north of Preston this week are hourly to Glasgow and two hourly to Edinburgh. Anyway, the train arrived and it was a 221 not a 390 as I would have expected. Advice of no seat reservations suggests a different train to original plan. And realtimetrains hints at a Pendolino.
Can anyone shed light on whether or not the Voyager was a result of a late change of plan?
Secondly, if the idea was perhaps 390s to Glasgow and 221s to Edinburgh. It fuels another thought. Can Pendolinos reach Edinburgh by reversing at Carstairs if need be?
