Trenitalia have their own app, I have used it and works fine but won't work offline as far as I'm aware.

I think that was the one I was looking at, I had to put passenger details (names) in each time!? Do they have paper timetables still if I pop to the station?

A couple of years back, at least, it was possible to pick up paper timetable in some places for some routes. I have no idea how universal it is, but given the generally passenger-friendly nature of much of the Italian system, I presume timetables are fairly generally available.

Although not a mobile app, you can download 'Quadri Orario' from the FS website. It runs on a PC and will auto-update whenever FS alters the timetable. The all-Italy timetable plus lots of other FS timetable publications can be downloaded too. https://www.trenitalia.com/it/informazioni/orario_ferroviario.html is the page to look at.
