I've just received a text from a friend asking if you get any complimentary food and drink on Italian 1st class. I said I didn't know but knew a forum that would. Also the he'd probably have to supply me with more details. But for now, is there a general rule of thumb?

For the levels of service on board a Frecciarossa train:

http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=89ddbd6bc1abf310VgnVCM1000008916f90aRCRD

(The site also gives details of the Frecciaargento and Frecciabianca trains - the level of service slowly decreases! Assume similar to Frecciabianca for the IC trains, and nothing on the Regionales).

For Italo:

http://www.italotreno.it/EN/discove...s/journey-ambiences/prima/Pages/overview.aspx

You can check the differences between Prima and Club, as well as look at the menus.

Travelling last year between Desenzano del Garda and Venezia in 1st, on the way there on an IC service we got a snack and a drink.

Coming back on the regionale we got a sligtly bigger seat.

Interestingly my wife and grandmother in law were simply served, then I was asked for my ticket before being served. I had the tickets for all three of us.

Look up expectantly when the catering on ICs is coming round, or they will not ask, just pass by!

In general it is very, very rare for any free food/drinks, also in 1st on any Europe-train. In IT on the Hi-speed trains, you can choose when buying ticket-the higher priced 1st. cl. options include something, the lower priced not. IF you get anything at all, also in other countries, may thus depend not just on ''1st class'' but also what type of fare.

Between Rome and Naples (old line IC train) I seem to remember a thimbleful of coffee and a postage stamp-sized chocolate biscuit.
But that was better than on the Bologna-Rome Pendolino - nothing.

Thanks for the replies. I've passed it on and my friend text me to say he was enjoying a journey across Italy from Rome to Pescara. He timed it so I got the message just as I was leaving home for a night shift..........
