IT jobs on the railways.

Afternoon all,

I am currently at college and have just gotten a Level 2 IT diploma and i am doing another 2 years for a Level 3 IT diploma.

When i get out of college in 2 years time i would like to use my IT skills to work on the railways, are there any jobs on the railways that are IT based at all???

I did an IT degree at University, so I would love an IT job in the railways. I currently do have a job in IT however, and company I work for do strangely enough have IT contracts with South West Trains, Chiltern Railways, East Coast, and ATOC. You'll find a lot of the IT work is outsourced.

Either in-house supporting the basic IT needs of a company in a traditional IT department of a TOC or working for one of the contracted companies who do maintainence. They may be a few roles created here and there are WiFi and Smart is rolled out.

As already has been pointed out, the large majority of IT work is outsourced. Companies like HP, Fujitsu, Oracle etc are the way to go. Most of these companies will have divisions, where a part of that company will deal with a TOC, as mentioned above

Network Rail have plenty. Just keep your eye on the vacncies, especially in Milton Keynes and London. Also Great Anglia have some IT vacancies at the moment. They may be a bit senior though.

I got an IT Degree but decided I'd rather leave the computers behind and do operational roles instead.

TfL IT stuff is mostly in house, might be worth a look.

It's done in partnership with an external company IIRC, but TfL IM Services is somewhere I would say could work out.

But it depends on if you want to do 'IT Support', or something more technical like coding and programming...?

Atos?

Atos use a subcontractor to look after their ticketing systems, TfL did use Logica / CGI, I think... it may have gone full circle to SCC, but I'm not sure. SCC are on 0121 766 4605, that should be their HR wing, SCH...

Morson International (www.morson.com) was who I went with to get into IT with said Atos subcontractor... aside from that, jobserve.com may yield something if you put Transport in the search string

If you get a job at one of the TOCs in the IT department, you will be very close to the real stuff, operationally supporting across the office, maybe depots - planners, control centre, engineering. Also traditional office jobs - ms office, 'monitor not working', water in the keyboard stuff. This is probably quite exciting as a starting role, but experience is expected so you can hit the ground running; they may let you learn the industry, but not IT
If you lucky, there may be some in-house development - this is fun.

Companies like Network Rail, TfL, ATOS, and a few others are a good ladder into the industry and you have an interesting learning curve, too.
And there is plenty of small (but mighty and well settled) butique companies, that bubbled out from the IT departments, unis, etc. They create specific solutions for the industry and getting a role there is the coolest thing you can imagine - this is where the fun happens, the innovation and value is created. A proper industry knowledge, across all functions would be great asset before applying, but you never know.
Get yourself a copy of the Rail Magazine or something like that, check the advertisers and pick one you want to work for.
