Is this incorrect advice from East Coast and London Underground?

My friend bought a ticket from Peterborough and specifically asked to go to Moorgate. The East Coast agent said it would be cheaper with Oyster PAYG.
I advised my friend that I do remember there being an easement at Kings cross to take the tube down to moorgate.
The barrier opened at Kings cross tube station, and he took a south bound northern line to Moorgate. The barrier opened at the LUL end. He asked the barrier staff why he was given incorrect advice and told to spend money on the oyster card. The LUL staff said that the ticket was invalid and he was lucky to get through!!

I believe my friend was given incorrect advice. Please can someone confirm this. Thanks.

Yes. Tickets with a destination of 'London Terminals' that are valid into Kings + (eg. in this case Peterborough - London Terminals would count) are valid to/from Old St and Moorgate ONLY by London Underground.

[As a side point, not relevant in relation to the OP]
This can cause many problems as a ticket with a destination of London Terminals which has been used on NR into Kings + will then open the barriers at the Underground station. Many people then assume their ticket is valid on the Underground and end up at another station and cannot get out, because their ticket is invalid.

Can I just clarify that tickets only need to be to "London Terminals" and valid into Kings Cross - they do not need to have the Maltese cross symbol "✠" (or sometimes "+" due to its omission from standard keyboard layouts) denoting inclusion of cross London travel by Underground, printed on the ticket.

Yes this is correct. If the ticket is valid between Finsbury Park and London Terminals, then it would be valid for travel on the Underground between Kings + St Pancras, Old Street and Moorgate.[1]

[1] Also between Finsbury Park, Highbury/Islgtn and Kings + St Pancras, should the person holding such a ticket be on an FCC train which stopped at Finsbury Park and wished to change there. Accordingly, I cannot see how this would preclude a person doing a journey such as Biggleswade > Finsbury Park > Drayton Park > Highbury/Islgtn, then changing to the Underground and travelling to Moorgate via the Victoria and Northern lines.
