Is this a valid route?

Is it ok to travel from Darlington to Sunderland via Eaglescliffe (just so I can travel GC), then return via Newcastle on a Darlington - Sunderland return. I think it should be but would appreciate some confirmation please

The shortest route is always valid, this is via Eaglescliffe. As for via Newcastle, I'd be shocked if it wasn't valid! (Even if it was not valid it would be accepted as all guards I've ever heard of accept reasonable routes without checking the RG) Have you checked the Routeing Guide? I don't think there's any need to though really.

Sunderland is a member of the Middlesbrough and Newcastle routeing points

Using the fares check rule and the Anytime Day Return

Darlington to Sunderland- £10.80
Darlington to Middlesbrough- £5.00
Darlington to Newcastle- £10.80

We can therefore see that both Newcastle and Middlesborough can be used as routeing points.

Darlington to Middlesbrough has map ER, allowing your travel to Sunderland via Eaglescliffe.

Darlington to Newcastle has map ER as well, allowing you travel from Sunderland to Newcastle and then also Newcastle to Darlington via Durham.

Bear in mind even though map ER states you must travel via Middlesbrough to get to Sunderland, because Eaglescliffe is a member of the Middlesbrough group you are legally allowed to double back between members of the group and thus you can take the route to Sunderland you wish.
