Spotted this at Crewe the other day next. It looks like a repainted Caledonian Sleeper carriage? Anybody idea what it is and what is being used for?

Yes, it's a sleeper coach, I've seen them in the pullman rake before, there is at least a couple of them. I think they're for staff, but someone else will know more.

Looks like a Locomotive Services Limited Mark 3 sleeper, as mentioned upthread they are used for staff accommodation when Mr Hosking and his family go off on one of their multi-day jollies (ahem....route learning trips) to Scotland, Wales or the West Country. ;)

Now, of course, they're the only operational Mark 3 sleepers in close to original condition.

If they aren't ex CS where did they come from?
Before privatisation, there was a larger network of sleeper trains (some cross country routes). These were withdrawn from service because at the time of privatisation because it was Too Hard™ to find an operator for them when services were being partitioned up. As a result some mark 3 sleeper vehicles were surplus to requirements.

As a side note, some preserved railways were using old Mark 1 sleeper vehicles as staff accommodation. The withdrawal of cross country sleepers allowed them to take on Mark 3 sleepers to replace them.
