Is there scope to expand Stansted in terms of platforming? Or is the main issue the single tunnel (which I can't see investment for, for a good while).
On first impression, it seems there could be space for another bay next to the existing one. Whether that is actually do-able or not is far from trivial to tell, however. No doubt people know more than me on this.
It would certainly help to have another dedicated platform, as currently the GA Cambridge trains have to be managed very carefully. They either block a Liverpool Street from going out until after they have gone, or are themselves blocked in by a Liverpool Street that has arrived after it. There's very little flexibility for when things go wrong, even down to a train arriving a few minutes late, especially with the tunnel also being a major constraint.
