No, train or bus only. The trams don't go to Stockport yet (unless they've snuck them in since I last visited!).

No, the tram doesn't go anywhere near Stockport. There has been talk of a line but it's not in the currently funded proposals.

To be strictly pedantic the last couple of metres of the access ramp at East Didsbury tram terminus are in the borough of Stockport!

Could always take the tram to East Didsbury and then take the 43 (or is the 42?) the rest of the way, since the bus goes very close to the tram stop.

I tend to asume people are on about towns/cities/villages unless they clarify...

Edwin's statement would still have been true on the pre-1974 boundaries of Stockport County Borough.

It's the 42, and this is the opposite direction the OP wants to travel :)

Not 100% sure of that... the western side of Burnage Lane - the half where the ramp ends/starts is Manchester: it's the Eastern side of Burnage Lane that's Stockport. The white lines down the middle of the road should be the cut off point as I understand it. If i'm happy to have learnt something: otherwise sorry to be equally as pedantic. ;)

The Stockport extension is the least developed of the future Metrolink plans, as shown by this 2012 map of possible extensions which doesn't even show it. The Trafford Centre/Port Salford line and Second City Crossing are shown.

http://www.metrolink.co.uk/futuremetrolink/Documents/network-map-with-new-extensions.pdf

I do recall a large glossy booklet detailing the precise route, bridge, and stop locations; superimposed upon aerial photos.

It was around late '90s/early '00s and had the purple/gold "double arrowhead" logo.

On the SkyScraperCity future extensions metrolink thread user JDR did a photo tour of the route from East Didsbury to Stockport as it is now (well a few years ago as East Didabiry Metrolink doesn't exist but ya know ;)) if I can find it I'll post a link

Don't think Stockport really need it. Well linked to Manchester by train and bus.

 that has come up time and time again about the airport line and the proposed Stockport line - people won't travel end to end, how many people do you know regularly do East Didsbury to Rochdale end to end, pretty much zilch because they'd use the train because its quicker, but if they'd going Chrolton to Rochdale they can use the tram to Victoria and then the train. It's for connecting people who weren't served by any form of quick connections.

I lived in Stockport for a few years and never found it lacking for transport options - maybe it's changed in the past few years. Can think of more poorly connected areas for sure!

You still don't understand, it's not always going to be for people in Stockport, just as the Airprot line isn't for just people at the airport it's to connect the communities along the route...

But I imagine it will run a similar route to the current buses do! I think it's just me as having moved away from Manchester I'm now very bitter about how good public transport is up there!

Indeed. Landed at Manchester Airport in the middle of last night, and caught the 02:06 service 43 home.

Eurgh does anyone actually listen?! People in Chorlton don't all want to go Rochdale it connects communities so for example people Didsbury can go shopping in Chorlton not so people make end to end journeys but you're just going to ignore this like you have with the previous posts

I suspect it's also operational. The Chorlton line is 100% double track and segregated from street operation except in the city centre, so Chorlton to Rochdale ought to be highly reliable, which it needs to be because of the single lines at Newton Heath and Rochdale. Running Rochdale services on the long street routes to Eccles or Ashton or the Navigation Road single line would probably result in a lot more delays on those two single lines.

How did I ignore what you're saying? I am not disputing that people may want to make journeys but I am stating that most of the journeys can already be done via the very extensive bus network bus network. Maybe I've not read the the tram proposal wrong but none of the areas it's proposed to serve has poor connections with any or of the places the tram will serve.

What the area most needs is stations, services and lines reinstating. Stockport-Marple, a Metrolink/heavy rail interchange at Baguley (with enhanced rail frequency between Altrincham and Stockport) and a proper service on the Denton line. Tram-trains could be used for some of those but I don't think conventional trams are what's needed around the Stockport area.

Amen to that. I don't quite understand why the Denton line hasn't had proper services, northern wanted an hourly post hub service to Victoria iirc and network rail rejected it or something I'm not too sure.

Firstly I didn't mean you!! The bus network has clogged up many roads resulting in quite bad congestion. If a 12/6 minute service parallels a 7/8 minute bus service then people will switch ala Droylsden

I'm not sure about any rejected applications. A Stockport-Victoria service is part of the Northern Hub but along with other proposed services requires DMUs to be freed up by electrification to be able to run. I think the new Burnley-Manchester service and additional local services between Bolton and Manchester (following Scottish services being diverted via Wigan) will be the first services to run as a result of cascaded stock from electrification.
