I read somewhere that one of the things helping drive populism is a yearning for the past/nostalgia. This, combined with a few other problem areas I've noticed, has got me wondering if a number of the problems the world is seeing today can be attributed to technological development and societal change happening too quickly? To take an analogy, in military battles, if an army moves too far too fast, the supply lines can't keep up and the combat forces are left stranded and vulnerable as a result. In this instance, if most of the population cannot keep up with the pace of societal change, they will be left behind and vulnerable. The nostalgia is a means to cope with this, whereas if change happened more slowly, they'd be less likely to notice (i.e. frog in a boiling pot).
We're seeing this plenty with rollout of AI, but all sorts of other technology has done the same. I also wonder if the rise in problems/prevalence of neurodiverse conditions can be attributed to rapid change in society; yes greater awareness and knowledge has led to more cases being discovered, but given neurodiverse people are more unable to cope with change than others, they are far more likely to struggle in a rapidly changing world.
I don't know see this changing though without a major global recession and/or several revolutions around the world; although both of these events could easily happen in the not too distant future given the state of things.
