I knew things could be a bit hit and miss on the lignes classiques but I was surprised to see that the branch serving the port of Roscoff in Britany is only served by 2 trains per day @.@ - guess I'm used to the half hourly service on the Exmouth branch..

That's apparently normal. Frances conventional rail system is falling into disrepair because they only care about the TGV network.

Too true. In July I went with my Dad to St Malo on the ferry from Pompey and decided to get a train from St Malo to Dole just for the hell of it. The train times I'd printed from the SNCF website only showed trains up to 09:50, but as the one before that wa at 09:20, I assumed the trains to Dole from then on ran at xx:20 and xx:50. Big mistake. We got to the station and discovered that the next train was the 12:50 TGV to Paris, and the next one to Dole wouldn't be until 13:00!

And on some lines you'll find (if you look carefully at the timetable) that part or all of the service is run by 'Autocar' - a bus!

So I guess it would be bus (if those exist - is there a french version of the traveline site?) to the junction and see what is about on the mainline :)

The SNCF autocars will be shown as part of a normal rail timetable search, but I don't know if there is a French Traveline equivalent. The website of the departement concerned may help with bus details.
Edit: for French departement councils, the web address is www.cgXX.fr where XX should be replaced by the number of the departement - 29 for Finistere, in which Rostock is located.
