Hi all,

I'm wondering if there's an easy way to tell if a particular fare in the UK is regulated or not?

Given the sheer number of possible fares, I'm guessing there's not just a massive list of them and it's based on some kind of rules?

There is actually a list, here. But in short - most season tickets will be regulated. Most longer distance Off-Peak Returns will be regulated. And most Anytime Day Returns will be regulated. Was there a particular fare which you wanted to know whether it's regulated or not?

Ah, fantastic, thanks. Thought there might be an FOI request lurking somewhere.
I'm specifically looking for London-Leicester, but I'm interested in general. Might build a little mapping website with this data, if there isn't one already.

Is there a definition of a "regulated fare"?

I really, really hope there is an unambiguous legal definition of this.

There are plenty of House of Commons briefing documents on this. I can't dig them out right now, but basically it's what I said above - "commuter" season tickets (which is most of them), fares that were Savers in 2003/4, and Anytime Day Returns. Regulated fares are also defined in the relevant TOCs' franchise agreements, as this is where the fares regulation actually arises (i.e. the duty not to increase the price or restrictions beyond the prescribed level).
