That so many people get killed on the railways when they decide to do things like this? Never would I have even thought someone would try this.
I don't know how they managed to dig it out let alone crawl under the track bed before someone saw them.

(I wasn't sure to post this in pictures and videos but thought I would be better discussed here also maybe a place for more stories, pictures and videos of stupidity on the railways.)

Very stupid and dangerous, nonetheless, I did find it mildly entertaining.

Would have had no sympathy, however, if his head had been tore off, which it would have been if the lad on the platform hadn't been shouting at him to keep low.

Entertaining thanks to commentary but stupid as hell.

Makes you wonder what else people are doing out there for a laugh...

I wonder if this is enough evidence for criminal prosecution 'I wonder...'

  • Criminal Damage - Moving the Stones etc...
  • Trespassing - on to prohibited 'No Access' areas.

I know it is a bit late but it is basically giving yourself away.

Reckless endangerment perhaps?

The infrastructure guys will be better placed to say with any certainty what the "other" consequences could have been from this, but...

They have created a MASSIVE void under the sleepers, removing the support for the sleepers no doubt increasing the stress within those members. Also, removing the support for that section of track possibly allowing a deformation to take place?

Given that the void will want to be filled by the adjacent material through the disturbance from passing trains, surely a vertical displacement would very soon emerge, with the possibility of a high speed derailment?

I dont know the ins-and-outs of track engineering, but I would say alot of the principles are the same as highway engineering.

I just hope that when those irresponsible idiots kill themselves (something which seems quite inevitable in the very near future after that behaviour) that they don't take any innocent people with them, or traumatise someone (e.g. the train driver that is unfortunate enough to decapitate one of them).

Having thought about it for a few hours, I used YouTube's facility to flag it as encouraging dangerous behaviour. I strongly encourage other responsible people to do the same, as it's my considered opinion that having videos like that floating around will encourage others to behave in a similar fasion.

Take your pick between dangerous and illegal activity on the YouTube form, as you see fit. The button should be "Flag" a few lines under the video display.

what train goes over him?
Looks like a 'Duck' set that operates on the Dublin - Cork route to me. The DVTs look like Ducks, and the loco is an Irish version of a Class 67. Better than a DMU but not terribly exciting.

You can tell because of the green lower body, and the yellow doors. The undercarriage matches too. Looks like the loco is at the front and the Duck is at the rear. It's too long to be one of those boring DMUs, and the Mk2/Mk3 stock was orange.

As for the video, I'm not really sure what to say :|

I can't say i'd have possibly done the same at that age, but I did find it entertaining if completely reckless and unacceptable. I don't know what the rules are pertaining to trespass in the republic but i'm sure they were well broken. :)

Endangering the railway. Or something to that effect.

I believe (and Old Timer will confirm or deny this) that when you remove support for the sleepers in the middle they can shatter which would cause massive trauma to the man underneath. Quite possibly a derailment too.

If I remember my structural engineering lectures from oh so long ago, in this instance by voiding the middle you are creating a beam out of something designed to be a pad. I dont think it would shatter in the middle under loading (depending of course the dynamic loads and the structure of the sleeper) as the load is being supported at the ends on the much reduced area of ballast.

What you could get is the load exceeding the strength of the sleeper in compression (the load normally spread along the entire sleeper bottom now concentrated on its ends), or exceed the bearing capacity of the ballast either side of the void causing it to partially collapse in.

Of course, as I said before, I am literally transposing what would happen on a highway construction - track construction could be completely different.

Do concrete sleepers contain any rebar to resist bending force in the section between the rail mounts? If not, the live bending allowed by the void (with the live loads being transmitted between the fully supported ends and the unsupported middle) could very easily cause a fracture somewhere in the unsupported section, I reckon. So, it depends what is meant by "shatter".

Will the sleeper suddenly "shatter" into lots of small pieces of rubble? No, highly unlikely, IMHO

Will it fracture into 2 or 3 large pieces if left in that state, assisted by the repetitive flexing of the live load and continuing loss of support and movement as the disturbed ballast naturally settles? Not certain, but seems like a distinct possibility, including sudden failure with a large lump of heavy concrete landing on any idiot that happens to be underneath it at the time.

Just tried to do so, but for some reason YT only allows logged-in users to flag videos (Meaning that people are forced to open YT accounts to flag bad content, which is NOT best practice) - I'll have to wait until I'm next on YT from my own PC where I have auto login available. :|

Personally - And many might call me daft for saying this - I have to say that's a kind of stunt that I wouldn't mind trying for the laughs, especially as I wouldn't mind experiencing being "run over" by a train in that context. However - Unlike the complete wBankers in the video <( - I'd only be able to do it using a properly constructed inspection pit (One over which trains could fly at speed with no risk to train or P-way) and with full knowlege and consent of the railway in question; A fully sanctioned and permitted stunt with all the necessary safety precautions in place. :!:

Looking at the full comments page for that video, it looks like the Police managed to catch up with them in the end though - They apparently "got done" for it. 8)

stupid idiot, I hope he does that again without getting under the sleepers and consequently dies!

that actually sounds fun, but you are unlikely to get an inspection pit like that on a main running line, the closest you would be likely to get is by using the anti suicide pit in a tube station, but I wouldn't want to get that close to that high voltage

Well said, however I think into the jet of an airliner would be more deserving, young type people could watch that video and try to repeat it but fail and mr driver and mr best friend suffer with that image for the rest of their lives.
not good at all.
