Irish Rail Four Day Trekker

I’m looking at making a trip to Ireland to tour the network and found this ticket which looks pretty good value. Has anyone used this ticket or any other passes for Irish Rail? Curious to hear any thoughts on it.

Four consecutive days of unlimited travel on all Iarnród Éireann services in the Republic of Ireland from the date of issue on the ticket.

I used one of these on a Forum trip to Ireland about 18 months ago (pretty sure the others also had this ticket). Had no trouble buying one at Dublin Connolly nor in using it - great value. You can also use it as the base ticket to purchase an upgrade in advance to First Class (on individual services) where available ie Dublin to Cork. To do this you need to use the Free Pass option in the booking site.

I also used a Dublin Visitor Leap Card to get around the city on Dart and Luas.

I did one of these over a decade ago, and they are excellent value. For touring the IE network, they're brilliant and well recommended

Yes indeed I did, almost 11.5 years ago! I'm having a re-read of my own trip report now, hopefully it'll give you some ideas. Of course, any pricing mentioned will be well out of date, and the motive power has changed on some lines!

I did this Four Day Trekker number in autumn 2017: bought on the spot at Dublin Heuston, after arrival in Ireland -- found it excellent value. In my four days' travelling, covered nearly the whole passenger network south of and including the Dublin -- Athlone -- Galway main line; could have "bagged" yet more track, but -- personal quirk -- consequence of a virtually lifelong, but 95%-or-so "in my head", love affair with Ireland's railways and the place itself: chose to pay extra in bus fares, in the interests of covering parts of itinerary so as to see tracts of the country which were once, but are no longer, served by rail.

Yes I was on the same trip and had this. Was very useful when I had to book a last minute flight from Cork when the ferry was cancelled.

Be mindful that some of the longer distance routes have very few trains per day on weekends and that you may be waiting a long time for trains, unless you plan perfectly around them. The good thing is the tickets are far cheaper than the UK and much of Western Europe but you may end up with commuter stock on IC services and metro stock on commuters due to a shortage of stock on IE.

I guess that's either good or bad, depending on one's taste in motive power. I've now re-read my trip report, and I see I loved the 29000 Class on an IC route.

I'm certainly in the mood for a revisit, that's for sure, following both this thread and revisiting my 2012 trip report. I noted back then it was €110, so it was more expensive back then by the looks of it.
