Would an Irish Mk3 coach have the structural integrity to accommodate an engine?
It's one way of strengthening 156s.

What's happened to all the ex-Virgin Mk3s that were in service before the Pendos came along? The Mk3 is the finest rail vehicle by far that UK has ever had - comfortable, smooth riding, rigid, safe.
Why weren't they cascaded to other services (eg Liverpool - Norwich or x-country routes) with locos?

Because a lot of them (more than one hundred certainly) were cascaded onto the GEML to replace the 86s+Mk2s that had been working on that line.
