Yes.
Most countries in that area aren't free or democratic as we'd know it and are mostly motivated by religion in deciding how to rule. I've just discovered homosexual women in Iran get 100 lashes, and on the 4th occasion, death.

I'm sure even if you really wanted to be, you couldn't be physically and sexually attracted to men. It's just not how your body works or whatever...
I mean, I often think how much easier it would be to just be straight, but you can't change your sexuality.

As ever in life, it's not that simple. Some maybe genetic, some may be personality, some will be the environmental influences on you both unseen - parental values, role models, etc) and some unseen - chemicals in the air etc which can and do affect the way that a person's brain wire together.
As with most personality traits / lifestyle choices (obsessives / compulsives / addictive personalities / thrillseekers), sexuality is only just starting to be understood in bio-medical sense. It is a really interesting areas, but one in which it is very hard to be objective, since on the spectrums of promiscuous - celibate and heterosexual - homosexual, everyone fits at different points, and each regards their own behaviour as normal. A persons position on the spectrum can also change over time, and with different experiences, and the ratio of various hormones in the brain, and the effect of environmental chemicals affect the way that various neurones in the brain interact.
Still we should be thankful at least that the American far Right only advocate psychiatric treatment for homosexuality, not corporal punnishment, because after all they are 'civilised' west, not the 'barbaric' Theocracy of the Middle East......Physical pain vs Mental pain - it's a tough call.
