Ipswich to Cambridge & Peterborough

The last Monday to Friday train from Ipswich terminates at Bury St Edmunds and starts back from there the following morning. What is the advantage to the railway of stopping there when the last ones in the other direction do run to Ipswich?

The sets involved run empty from/to Ipswich; the alternative would be to extend through to Cambridge which is further, and would probably involve extra signalbox hours.

There is a Cambridge to Ipswich service that departs Bury St Edmunds at 23:27 arriving Ipswich at 00:05 formed a class 153, that's why the unit heads back ECS.

The 05:31 Bury St Edmunds to Ipswich is formed of a class 170, and departs Ipswich at 04:54 ECS arriving Bury St Edmunds at 05:23, the reason this unit heads out to Bury St Edmunds empty stock is there will be no one wanting to travel to any station between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds at 5am on a morning.

The Ipswich - Cambridge service is worked exclusively by Ipswich crews. You could conceivably have an Ipswich crew on a night turn to work the last train through to Cambridge and the first one back the next morning, but that would be very expensive for minimal revenue. Although they could keep the Norwich night crew company at Cambridge

All due to the carve up of Central Trains a few years ago, which saw Cross Country base themselves at Cambridge, and East Midlands Trains having a small base at Norwich. GA, or NXEA as it was then, were left holding the baby.

The driver won't be (not sure if that's what you mean). It's likely to just have been added to the diagrams.
