I did a serarch on here but other Ipswich Buses threads look closed so please forgive me if this is a pointless thread!

Ipswich Buses are taking over routes 2/2A Manningtree to Clacton from Panther Travel and routes 4 and 11 in Colchester currently operated by Arriva Colchester from 27th July.

Quite a bit of dead mileage but i believe these are all Essex County Council contracts.

Now that is an interesting development.

Obviously not on the scale of Reading Buses expanding to cover routes in Slough. But interesting non the less, especially the Colchester element. Wonder if they will have a sub brand for the Essex routes

Clearly must of went in very low with their tenders. The amount of dead mileage is shocking (environmentally not friendly!) and probably doesn’t involve more than a handful of vehicles. Potentially these contracts could be tagged on to other stuff. Imagine the hassle of route learning drivers!

IMO they need to get things in order on their own commercial network in Ipswich before chasing things like this. They are still operating critical covid-19 timetables of every 30/60 mins when other operators have more or less returned to normal frequencies.

In other news enviro 83, evolution 156 have been sold and Olympus 68 is advertised for sale on chartwell bus sales.

Had a quick look at timetables and 2/2A requires one bus (running dead to/from Clacton) and 4/11 requires two buses (running dead to/from Colchester Highwoods). So only three buses worth of work.

Also note that driver changes will also require travelling to/from these locations in a company van/car? So that’s another factor. If breakdowns occur that’s a long way to travel too!

Haha assume that’s a joke?! Wrong on so many levels.
Yes, it might be possible to have the vehicles interwork at Manningtree and Colchester so they can take reliefs back at Ipswich :)

Sorry, it's this heat. Wonder if it's possible to relieve both services with one bus - maybe even a school bus driver between morning and afternoon.

Haha too hot! Yes; that makes sense shuttling drivers in off service buses from contracts etc. Certainly can’t expect them to sit for an hour plus on a service bus (presumably paid too) back and forth.

Could the 92/2/2A be retimed and co-ordinated perhaps? Or maybe combine to operate a through Ipswich - Clacton service. Think EC/EN shared a service 123 in NBC days.

All interesting anyway! Just wish they’d ditch the ugly green/purple. And the branding on 9/10, 13 is horrific! Looks like it’s been designed in Microsoft paint... not to mention the colours chosen don’t tally with the network map. Amateur stuff.

Do we think the citaros coming from Wellglade will get a revised livery? Or updated interior? Otherwise it’s quite some sickly colour palette boarding a green/purple bus to find a bright yellow/blue interior!!

Just read on a Facebook page that subsequently to IB gaining these Essex contracts they’ve lost Suffolk contracts from their home town!

SCC routes 111, 116 and 174 (from Woodbridge - Felixstowe)

Doesn’t make sense they’re unsuccessful winning contracts on their own door step but gaining work elsewhere.

Blog also says they’re starting to withdraw the Scania Omnicity DD’s. That cannot be right?

Are you also on the Ipswich forum buslad1988?! Sounds very similar to someone who posts on there on a regular basis. If not my apologies.

Now I have no experience in running a bus company, and have no intention of doing so, but I prefer to look at it from a business point of view with my operational managerial background rather than the rose-tinted enthusiast/traditionalist view as these bus companies are supposed to be run as businesses not loss making departments of a council.

When tendering for any contract, you put in a price which covers costs plus a mark up to make profit. If someone undercuts you is it better next time to bid to run the tender at a loss or to stick to your costs model? OK if you are breaking into a market I guess as a loss leader, but not sustainable in an existing market. We don't know the financials of the costs vs tender price of course for these tenders as well as taking into account the differences between Essex processes and bidder behaviours and the Suffolk model. What I would say with a reasonable degree of certainty is that Ipswich Buses would have put in their prices for any and all contracts around Ipswich which are financially beneficial to them.

Lets not forget, not all SCC tenders have been announced yet, there is still the 118/119 and a lot of school routes up for renewal and I expect them to be very competitive at the moment as if a second lockdown comes, the school/contract routes still get paid. You only have to look at how First have suddenly gone in for tenders across Eastern Counties for proof of that with Norwich taking Konect contracts hand over fist.

So far Ipswich Buses have so lost 3 buses of work in Suffolk on the 111, 116 (that was a short term after Galloway threw in the towel) and the 174 and gained 3 buses in Essex.

Knowing that the local tenders are becoming few and far between as the County Council cuts routes to save money and forces prices down to silly levels on others, sense would say to look outside your normal area which is what Ipswich Buses have done. I can lose track of how many other bus companies have done so, Reading already being mentioned, Roberts of Hugglescote running Leicester P&R, Whippet running to Kettering and Corby with dead mileage from Swavesey to Huntingdon just a couple of examples.
I also wonder what the dead mileage is to Hitcham (111) /Wetheringsett (115) is compared to Severalls in Colchester. Yes Clacton is a bit further but don't forget the 117 used to have dead mileage to Harleston in Norfolk not so long ago! If a bus breaks down at Hitcham is it any quicker to get a tow truck there than Colchester via the A12?

Mention has also been made of the lack of buses running in Ipswich compared to First. Again business head on here, apart from peaks, most First buses I see are empty or have one or two passengers on it around Ipswich surely that's just losing money for the sake of it? We are in uncharted waters, and the usual IB knockers would soon be whinging if IB ran their pre-COVID timetables with lots of empty buses. Incidentally, not much mention has been made of how First have now dropped the commercial 60/60A (very quietly I might add - had it been IB I would think the press and the like would be jumping up and down by now) proving that even with sustained competition the volume of passengers just isn't there in Ipswich even on a busy route such as Nacton Road and Gainsborough. Chantry was another where it was tried and failed. First are finally improving their image with new branding and colour scheme which is very welcome having done this not so long back with the RAF Blue Ipswich rebrand and the interior refurbs. Ipswich Buses rebranded green and purple and have been mocked ever since. Guess if you paint your buses the same colour they were in in the 50s-80s then its fine.

Guess my point here is that its all well and good saying they should concentrate on Ipswich, but why not explore other revenue streams outside the borough boundary too? Yes the Ipswich town network could be better, a fleet of brand new buses running every 10 minutes everywhere would be fantastic, but realism has to kick in. Looking at our neighbours in Colchester, buses run between 10-60 minutes on towns on a comparable network to Ipswich, operated by two multinational companies with cast off buses from elsewhere - not much different to Ipswich after all, only thing is Ipswich is municipal so everyone expects it to run at a loss. Let us be judged by our actions after they have gone wrong.

Have a nice day everyone

Not heard of Ipswich forum, will check it out. Interesting to hear your take on the situation. Always pretty quiet on here for East Anglian related issues.

It’s very good they are exploring different revenue streams (which are limited) and trying new stuff out. Clearly not on the scale of Reading etc however they really do need to get their own house in order first. I live in Ipswich and know people who work for them. I won’t go into details but they’re certainly not fantastic.

I agree our town doesn’t need routes every 10 minutes everywhere with brand new buses. Just a simple, affordable, reliable network.

Yes I’m an enthusiast and whilst I’m no fan of the green/purple I get why they picked bold colours. It’s purely the execution of it, lack of flare and attention to detail that bothers me. These are things that First on the other hand have worked on and turned around. It doesn’t require massive new fleet investment.

They’re not the worst company out there, but middle of the road. Turn the clock back 20 years and it was a different story. But things change and you can say that about most companies. Perhaps being owned by the council is what’s holding them back now.

Will watch with interest how things pan out! Great to have some discussion on here.

Dont think any bus company can be that nowadays, always someone not liking a company and vocal about it over Social Media!

Sadly the initial purple and green "roads" livery was designed on a PC with no thought of the vehicle! Was designed as a eye catcher rather than a bus livery. Same for that awful rainbow P&R scheme, designed by people who are used to doing posters than bus liveries. The current purple and green is designed to be one panel one colour for ease of replacement and lower cost. Purple being the Borough's colour now. Wait for the next route branding, its sure to get people criticising!

Firsts local schemes are designed at HQ (hence why the Ipswich Reds is the same as First Cymru new scheme) and then embellished at Area HQ - i.e the Marketing Department in Norwich. A central design company for the whole of First so the cost is borne nationally rather than a small local operator. Easy to copy and paste from a corporate template when you work for First

Absolutely, that and the fact the town is a hole :) Have been a bit late to the increase COVID frequency party, but if it keeps them financially better off in the long run who are we to argue. A First town network doesnt bear thinking about!

Apparently Ipswich Buses are getting three former Bus Eireann Enviro200s from Ensign.

They did have a little operating centre in Doddinghurst which was ok for Brentwood but still a fair distance from Loughton and Romford.

They actually registered a public service from Chesterfield to Romford (or somewhere) I believe it operated on Friday evenings and returned on Saturday.

It was really only for the purpose of changing vehicles over but the general public could travel on it. Not sure if anyone ever did though!

As speculated might happen on another thread on here some weeks/months ago, Ipswich Buses have asked for a bailout

Congrats to whoever it was who predicted that!

Didn't realise that Stephen Bryce was now there, I can only think of him at GHA.
