iPhone Data Usage Question

Hi all , just a quick question that I hoped someone would be able to answer

I have an iPhone 5S , running ios 9.3.5

I only have 750mb Data , but recently I have seen huge spikes in data usage used by system services . Is there anyway that you can reduce data usage from system services , as i cannot find a way for this ?

I dont have and wouldmt want an Iphone but on Android I set all apps and updates to install over WiFi only, same with system backups and when connected to a good WiFi service, i.e at home or a friend or relatives house, not out and about using public WiFi I disable my mobile data.

It depends which system services you are talking about. There are ways to limit updates/data syncing to wi-fi only.

In the settings you should be able to get a full breakdown of how much data each app has been using recently, and also the different system services (in a sub-menu at the bottom of that list).

Settings > Mobile Data > System Services (near the bottom of the list of apps) and this will give a breakdown of each set of system services - if you post which are the high ones (a screenshot would be good if you don't mind revealing this data) we may be able to better advise - my list has 24 different items in it!

Note that the usage doesn't reset automatically - the very bottom of the Mobile Data screen shows when it was last reset (I'm on a flavour of iOS 10 on my work mobile here, but I think it is the same in iOS 9.5.3)

Ok so after having reset , here is the figure after one hour

It seems small , but doing this every hour means its taking up a large amount of data

The biggest one is obviously google. Did you use that app for anything? (Email as well as outlook?)

Time and Location is the big hog of system services there. My stats go back to May 2015 (which will be when I received the handset) and the same accounts for 239MB out of numerous GB total. A quick look online suggests this Time and Location is when GPS is in use - which that North East pointing arrow on the top indicates. What can do this I think is in Location Services

One thing to mindful of is, as far as I recall, when the phone is in standby and not plugged in, WiFi turns off (power saving) so it could be you have a lot of stuff synching at that time - obviously the screenshots have been taken with WiFi on, but if you weren't actively using the phone at the time, it may not have always been on WiFi

I should say too, if your phone is indeed constantly on GPS getting locations for apps, it will also likely be absolutely battering your battery!

A general point: connect to Wifi and download your most used map areas for offline viewing in Google Maps. This will save using your mobile data when you use maps, although won't prevent GPS location finding.

Also , just a quick question

Is 1200 charge cycles on one battery , too many ? As my battery life has been getting poorer and Im wondering if its down to the number of charge cycles on the device . Does anyone know how many times a battery can be used before replacement ?

This article from a few years ago illustrates how charging works. In short, the number of recharging cycles is lower if the battery is allowed to go flatter in between charges

Definitely end of life. I'm currently on an iPhone 5 which reached 600-700 charge cycles before the charge capacity dropped to effectively half. I used coconutbattery on my Mac to check this. However my father currently has a 4S which has done >1000 cycles and still holds charge pretty well. I believe the 5 wasn't known for having much better battery capacity.

If you want to keep using the 5S, I recommend an ifixit replacement battery. Or if you're looking to upgrade, there is talk of an iPhone SE refresh happening tomorrow/this week.

I will probably use the 5S for a few more months , I quite fancy the new Sony XZ Premium , but i dont know when it comes out

Please make sure that WiFi Assist is turned off. What this does is use the 3G/4G connection along with the WiFi in places where the WiFi is sketchy to get the best download speed.

Turning this off and you will see your data usage reduce dramatically.
