Does anyone know what style of questions will be asked for the interview stage of trainee train driver for Northern Rail?

Which interview stage? The management interview or the structured interview?

When you say "style" do you actually just mean "what" questions?

Either way if you have a look at the wiki at the top of the page, there are literally pages of sage advice in there. Though possibly none denoting the style of questions asked, admittedly!

I have received an email stating that I has passed the sift stage and been invited to an interview- I think it's competency based so that would be the structured one I'd assume.

It's my first time on this process so really don't know what to expect

This will be an interview with most likely 2 managers, one will ask the questions the other will be busy writing and may chip in when they feel like it.
Do some research into the company such as routes they travel, The MD's name, parent company etc. find out something interesting about the company to talk about, anything will do to show you've at least looked at their website. Have a good reason for wanting to be a train driver and be prepared to explain that in detail.
You will be asked about previous experience of working alone, multitasking, decision making, dealing with emergencies etc.
They are not looking for a train expert, more someone who is aware that safety is your first concern and you have the ability to get through the training to their standards.

Pretty much as Steptwo suggests. The first interview with Northern (well it was when I had it) is what is known as the managers interview. There was a driver manager there and a lady from HR. It was very laid back and more like an actual job interview.

As suggested, find out a bit about the company and its routes. Also know why you want the job and make sure you're aware of the downsides (early starts, night work etc etc). Basically like you would for any job interview. If you're successful at this stage then they will send you for psychometric testing. Have a look at the wiki at the top of the page for more info on those tests, though you will have to progress through the managers interview first.

The first question will be "Describe a time when you have used your own initiative"

If its anything like the Train Driver interview I had with Northern, then it will be two people interviewing you(in my case it was two Driver Team Managers)

Some of the questions I was asked included, when I have helped organise a project and describe the challenges of said project. Also the usual questions of working within a team to achieve a goal and also being asked to describe a time of working alone.

Not the easiest of interviews, but the chaps interviewing me tried to me feel relaxed and told me to take my time when answering their questions

Good luck!
