Interview at GBRf.

Hi,

I have an upcoming interview at GBRf for the Trainee Train Manager position and I’m seeking information about working for the company. Online resources have provided mixed reviews regarding working conditions and practices. If anyone has firsthand experience or feedback, it would be greatly appreciated. While I plan to ask detailed questions during my interview, I want to prepare as thoroughly as possible.

I know a few people there who absolutely love it. As you say, some who have left say how terrible it is.

A driver I know there summed it up well to me when he said it's not the company to join if you want to do your 35 hours a week and go home, because they will find a weekly rota that works for your hours and likely copy and paste it week by week.

However, if you're flexible and like overtime - it's a place where you can make 6 figures easily.

Thanks for the reply. I'm am flexible but as i do like to have that quality time with my family too, otherwise, what's the point. I'm opened minded as I'm going in as a trainee.

I believe they have a very large training bond that you would need to repay should you leave shortly after training. I’m sure it was £50k+. Whether they could hold you to it I don’t know, but I’m sure they would try and chase you for such a large figure, unlike other companies asking for much less. Something to consider if you were just going for the training, not saying that is the case of course.

Hi. No offence taken btw. No, I'm not going for just the training. I did my psychometric with my current employer but they cancelled the driving apprenticeship program so if that continued, I'd plan to stay. I've been there over 11 years so I'm not one to jump ship easily. The train driving is something I want to do but I believe I should be a good fit for the company and they should be a good fit for me and my family so just wanted a bit of information. I understand working practices are different at all companies so some time, it's "just get on with it" unless it safety related, of course. Cheers for the heads up.

I don’t think there is a bad driving job anywhere tbh, but GBRf are known for driving their drivers pretty hard, although it seems you are paid pretty well for it. Go for it, do as much research into the company, routes, products hauled, depot etc and once you get an offer you can decide if it’s for you then. Good luck
