I was just wondering whether for InterRail purposes Northern Ireland is considered part of the UK or part of Ireland? The conditions state that the pass is not valid in your own country of residence, which for me is the UK, does that therefore mean I could use it in Ireland but not Northern Ireland?

My gut feeling is that I've only ever seen Northern Ireland being classified as part of Ireland in interrailing information, so I would think you'd be ok for both Northern Ireland and Ireland. I think you're better off contacting them directly though.

The Trekker covers all of the Republic of Ireland (as far as Dundalk) and is valid for four consecutive days from date of issue and costs €110 (£87), and like every other rail ranger / rover ticket on the island has no time restrictions.

iLink in Northern Ireland is £15.50 per day for the whole country (both rail and bus) or £57 for one week. There are four zone radiating from Belfast, naturally the more expensive for the more you cover.

And a piece of advice too - if you do Dublin-Sligo, make sure you take a book or something. Maynooth-Mullingar, especially from Enfield onwards, is the dullest line I have ever done in my life. The rest of it isn't breathtaking either sadly.

Bray to Arklow is about as scenic as it gets on IE. Ireland's most scenic area's are devoid of Rail (and in many cases) meaningful Bus/Coach services. My favourite route on the Island of Ireland is Coleraine to Derry.

Dublin-Galway was better and west of Athlone was actually really pretty in some places. Galway itself is also probably my favourite city I've ever been too. More than can be said for Sligo

Yeah, Dublin-Greystones was a nice run and between Dundalk-Newry and Little Island-Fota isn't too shabby but apart from that there's very little going on. I would also agree thoroughly on Coleraine-Londonderry, and also add Carrick-Larne. That's literally about it.

Oooh, the last time I did this it was an eventful journey. Mind you, perhaps that last pint of Guinness in Limerick was bad and that, and not any of many ones beforehand, was responsible for having to travel in the toilet!


For pleasant lines though, and from my username do infer a certain level of bias, the trip between Belfast and Bangor is both pleasant and interesting. There's the views of the docks, the airport, then open views of Belfast Lough, some countryside and then over the mouth of the Lough and the North Channel.

Mallow - Tralee is very good, especially between Rathmore and Killarney.
