But religion can let you commit crimes on the basis that can seek forgiveness. No wonder so many people convert after they've done bad things.

And if you convert and suddenly support (i.e. give money) to your local church, everyone is a winner!

This thread has taken an interesting turn. I remember watching a documentary about Sean Sellers, the American man who killed his parents and was executed. He pleaded that he had turned to Christianity. He knew that what he had done was a terrible crime, and he accepted that he had to be punished. But how can we tell if he was truly sorry, or just putting on an act to get off the boat?

Does Christianity still see homosexual individuals as essentially evil? Any cult or group that has suc stance will never be in my "good books" for so long as I know at least one such person - and I live with a lesbian.

My grandmother (a very strong Christian) once sat me down at told me they did. My mother heard and went ballistic.

With regards to porn, I think it all comes down to personal choice. As does religion. If you want it then have it, else just leave it alone. It's not that hard.

Seeing this thread has already descended into the religion debate, I think I'll add my two cents. :p

I have no problem with moderate theism. To me, it is very reasonable to believe that a God may well have created all of us. Personally, I feel that human logic (which produces the idea of God) cannot be easily applied to the inner workings of reality. We didn't make the universe, so there is no reason that "common sense" should apply at all. This is the case with, for example, relativity: there is a finite possible speed, energy and mass are effectively the same thing, time ticks at different rates depending on speed and gravitational potential: none of these are common sense at all, but are all demonstratively true.

What annoys me is the outdated rubbish that is still being preached by mainstream religion, despite the social and scientific advances made in recent times. I only hope that religion will either grow up a bit or else die out, because far too many evil things are done in its name for it to be a good thing. :|

Christianity does not and never has - "Let those of you without sin cast the first stone". Some of the more zealous practitioners may well, but they are twisting the religion to their own persuasions.

It does in stauncly Catholic often African Countries. Its a bit ironic due to the amount of Priests that like young boys........

Which also brings us neatly back round to the subject of porn!

Come to think of it where does light come from in Genesis because it clearly states light is formed before the stars!

Possibly from the background radiation from the big bang ( now cooled down to the cosmic microwave background ) since things apparently started* with this huge soup of complicated particles long before matter was formed as the universe cooled?

*According to the scientific approach, obviously. Then again, scientists have not exactly managed to explain exactly how the primeval atom that became the big bang was formed ( = created! ) out of nothing have they?;)

Depends on which theory of the universe you subscribe too. There is one which posits that the universe will one day stop expanding and start to contract until all the matter in the universe is concentrated in one spot at which point we get another big bang and the whole thing repeats itself on a loop.

A question for NickW or anyone else who loves God and his fictional existance:

In the Bible, who killed more - God or Satan?

Humans were created to live forever. But Satan tempted the first humans to disobey God resulting in God's rightful anger. As a result we live in a fallen world in which we all deserve death, ie the default and rightful state is for me to live a limited period and therefore die. God could have left it like that but "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." [John 3:16] Judgement has been carried out by God both before and after Jesus died and rose again, which I presume are the deaths you're talking about, and one day all of us will face judgement. But those who accept the free gift of mercy from God will not be judged for who they are, but for who Jesus was.

Echoing what Oswyntail said, some people who falsely claim to be Christians also falsely suggest that somehow all heterosexuals are completely good and all homosexuals are completely evil. The bible has the following to say:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.” [Romans 3]

It does in stauncly Catholic often African Countries.
The best thing to do is to check what a "Christian" says against the bible, because what they and the bible say is often miles apart. A good question to ask is "where did you get that from the bible?".

What annoys me is the outdated rubbish that is still being preached by mainstream religion, despite the social and scientific advances made in recent times
Many such scientific developments were of course made by Christians, suggesting that the two can co-exist very well. I'm not sure what you mean by social advances. If you read the bible, you will discover that even in Old Testament there were all the hallmarks of today's society - gardens, jewellery, drinking, women in high profile positions (gender equality is a biblical truth, not something that's existing in the last few decades), sewage systems, water supplies, sexual liberty. There's no mention of democracy but we know it was around in that time.

"Sexual liberty" in a religion dominated by very few commandments, one of which just happens to be "Thou shalt not commit adultery" (or something like that)? I do know the difference between said liberty and adultery, but I fail to see how the difference is so great that the former would actually be perfectly acceptable?

Christianity -- A cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree.

Apologies - I was just suggesting that society hasn't really "moved on". It may have got better than it was previously in Britain but isn't really that different to society as it was in biblical times.

Until Darwin there was only very isolated atheism. Remember, back in Victorian times in Europe and America and there overseas empires there was only Christianity apart from the secularism of the US founding fathers.

Christianity and what's done by so called Christians are generally not mutually exclusive because the former is needed for the latter to exist. Why should Christians be bothered about what adults do in their own home? It's because of their constant need to change others to their view

-Revelations said:
And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

Considering God rules over the world, presumably every time someone dies God is responsible, and every time someone is born and given life, God is responsible? So God has killed everyone who isn't currently living or not yet born?

I would disagree and suggest that few of those who professed Christianity were actually Christians in Victorian times. Just because a person attends a church building every week out of social expectation doesn't mean they believe it.

Christianity and what's done by so called Christians are generally not mutually exclusive because the former is needed for the latter to exist. Why should Christians be bothered about what adults do in their own home? It's because of their constant need to change others to their view
I don't think we are bothered at all. I have refrained from mentioning anything to do with Christianity on the forum until this topic prompted it and have no intention to talk about it any any other topics because it's not our intention to irritate.

Perhaps you now know why the need for salvation is real?

Humans were created to live forever.

How could God have ever allowed everyone to live forever? Can you imagine how over populated the planet would be??

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever!

Some are and some not. I respect those who do not more, this forum is very good for that.

All I see is that the Bible condones persecution of those who are not Christian. Thankfully of course Christians today aren't like that for the most part but it goes to show that, in your words, " because what they and the bible say is often miles apart. A good question to ask is "where did you get that from the bible?"."

Then you're misinterpreting it for your own agenda. If you actually read Revelation you would know that a)the part you quoted is a vision of the future and b) the locusts not people are commanded to carry out the "woe".

In my experience, real life women are rarely as grateful as they appear to be in pornography. Something to keep in mind.

Pornography is a fantasty not real life. As long as users remember this then Porn use should be perfectly harmless.

Religion is also fantasty, but belivers see it as real life and it takes over therefore Relgion can be very dangerous when belivers take it a step too far, for examples read The Crusades, read Palestine, read Belfast.......

Given some of the porn out there I'm not in the slightest bit surprised! As long as porn doesn't subvert reality then it's harmless if not beneficial - it surely follows that masturbation is a form of stress relief (Orwell touches upon it in nineteen-eighty four with the concept of goodsex)

indeed, some of the stuff I've seen I cannot understand how they appear grateful with some of the stuff in their mouths and other places! I'll never eat chocolate Ice Cream after a famous video involving two girls and a cup was shown to me, disgusting! :oops::cry:
