Don't know what peoples' views on this subject are but I find the above article very worrying reading indeed. The internet is a wonderful resource of information but internet pornography can wreck peoples' lives and relationships. The experts say that the addiction itself is one of the worst known in terms of rehabilitating a person and can have life long consequences if not properly treated. Herein lies a very serious question: Do we clamp down hard on the availability of internet pornography or do we preserve civil liberties but perhaps put it all under the .xxx domain for the greater protection of children?

Hmm Christian.com, that gives a hint of a slight bit of bias in that report.

Ok I'll Porn can be damaging and too much can cause relationship problems and some dodgy stuff is (or should be illegal). But sex is a natural human activity and should not be banned from internet or excessivly censored. Its the same as everything else, in moderation its ok, but too much and its like any other addiction.

Internet porn can easilly be sheilded from kids and there is plenty of software, programs and downloads that can assit in that.

Porn wrecks lives and relationships?? It can also greatly IMPROVE relationships and lives.

I would think that christian.org is going to be slightly biased in any article they write...

The internet should not be policed. It is a great resource which shows the freedom of expression we have.

Protect the kids? Lets get it right, if kids are ending up on porn, 99% its because they're having a sneaky peak whilst mummy and daddy are out... it is actually quite hard to "stumble" across porn.

What difference is it going to make using the .xxx domain? Instead of Benny the 14 year old typing in youporn.com, he will just type in youporn.xxx or do what most of us do and use Google!!

Yeah but it would make filtering software that much more effective if it all went under the .xxx domain

You can pick it up anywhere else though, regardless of domain, Facebook and YouTube are swimming in it.

As are things like Google Images; even its "Safe Search" function is unreliable. Trying searching for "girl" on Moderate and see what comes up! I guarantee that at least some topless women will appear. Conversely, you can find the odd shot that might say "That's someone's daughter", or similar.

Unfortunately, all of the above is common knowledge. I never have and never will develop any remote interest in this subject. I do not take too well to be forcibly shown pictures of certain specific bodily objects, especially those that begin with V and P.

Why post about this in a rail forum anyway...?

This section is non-railway related for discussing the world topics of the day and seeing as it was in the news only yesterday, I wanted to see what most people thought of more internet censorship if possible :)

We could just become like China and censor everything everywhere! If you try to access unsuitable content online, your door gets kicked down, you get paraded off and never seen again. Problem solved. ;)

I'm just talking about the legal stuff! :) Besides, the UK government are on about attempting such a crackdown according to the news in the last few days. Good luck to them; I don't fancy their chances.

China is not exactly that oppresive, although it does censor too much! My mate is out there teaching and he can still access Facebook, You Tube and full Flickr. My Wife is Chinese and she knows how to access sites that are blocked in the PRC. They don't kick peoples doors down and drag them away for accessing Facebook and Youtube!

Mind you, I get your point and I agree that we should not censor the Internet and if we did get strict like China, people would bypass the censorship like everybody in China and Iran does making it counter productive!

If they do,these people who think this is a good thing probably do not realise they will try to crackdown on other stuff including Trade Union activity, Political discusion etc etc (unless they are straight laced Conservative voting Daily Mail reading boring so and so's) ;)

Hmm, Christian.org, a site which promotes the power of faith in somebody no-one has seen based on a book written in a language that nobody speaks, and translated under the interpretation of whoever at the time.

Christian religions have promoted the stoning of women who don't marry rapists (along time ago), frowned upon historical discoveries such as a round Earth, or an Earth which orbits the sun, and promoted a celebate lifestyle which resulted in the abuse of thousands of children. This of course has all been brushed under the carpet and or rewritten in their 'interpretation' of the book to make them seem somehow relevant to modern society.

I think I'll take my chances with porn, after all I can see what's happening, and I seem to approve!

Agreed, and I would add that the book was written by man (women were essentially sub-human back then)

Sex is a natural process, what's so bad about porn? The downside I can see is that it may cause discrepancies between porn and real sex.

They already have the Extreme Porn Law which was based on 5 studies that claimed S&M was a bad thing. 4 were by the same Author and the 5th was a review of the other 4!

Its worse in Scotland. Someone asked what exactly constituted extreme porn under their new law and was told that if the definition was made public porn users would modify their behavior to use legal porn. WTF isn't the point that people stop doing what you are making illegal. It seems that they want to catch people!

Hello!

I just thought I'd chip in to this bit as I do like to stick up for the internet from time to time.

I think, although I have no research at hand, I remember it being discussed about the .xxx domain coming into force.

The reasons behind this is - it's give the industry a very stable filtering system and make it easier for google, bing, etc to omit from search results domains ending in ".xxx" - It's a grand idea and I can't wait for that domain.

Now I am not a pornography watcher myself, I don't like the idea of it, but people are too busy worrying about this to consider how much of the internet is porn: A tiny 10% of the internet is made up of porn and is no longer allowed to be used as pop up adverts.

The idea that pornography ruins relationships is half true, as with anything you can split people into two groups

Those who like it, those who don't. In many cases those who like it will use it to improve their personal relationships with each other and those who don't won't.

The Christianity population as a whole do not like pornography as it is so will say anything to get people against it, in my personal experience if Christians don't like it they'll make sure you know it and will force it out of your life.

I suspect I'm probably in the unfortunately majority who has viewed pornography on the internet at some point, but alas we all make mistakes.

Pornography is one of those things that is so damaging that it shouldn't be allowed but simply isn't banned because so many people prefer to have it available. Here are the reasons why:
1. Addiction - in terms of wasted time and loss of self control
2. Loss of self-esteem - for the partner-less viewer who feels he or she is missing out on something in life, or doesn't have particular body features that porn starts have or the partner of the viewer who feels he or she is deficient in some way.
3. Wrecked relationships - in relationships including marriages one partner has been unable to be turned on without seeing porn. Can you imagine how his feels for the other partner?
4. Increased difficulty and stimulating the market of regulating illegal sources of pornography - including child porn and human trafficking
5. Lost career opportunities for those in the sex industry
6. STIs and the fact that viewers of pornography have some responsibility for the trauma and in many cases reduced lifespan of the porn stars
7. The mental trauma experienced by porn stars who have to perform degrading acts, many of whom end up becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs to get through the experience
8. Family fallouts caused by people choosing to enter the industry
9. A negative effect on the way the different sexes are viewed within society

My daughter unfortunately shares her first name/surname with an American pornstar as we found out a while ago when we were searching Google for our names.

That's very unlucky! I suppose that'll teach us never to Google ourselves! ;)

That article seems to be rather biased in my eyes.

In reality their is a lot more worse things on TV then a bit of 'skin' such as violnece, drugs, guns, drinking all seem to be idoilized on TV soaps and so on. It is just in human nature, and in no way worse then those things i mentioned above.

Im Still wondering if Duke Nukem Forever will be censored in this country or in America since they seem to be completly against it, due to it's nudity content. Yet on that a supprising thing it isn't censored at all in Germany.

Also i would love to see Avenue Q as it does look fantastic :)

I think a couple of things need to be established. The internet did not invent porn, and before the internet there was a wide ranging and multi million pound pornographic industry. Pornography has also existed for as long as photography has existed. I'll address the points you've raised.

1 - addiction in terms of wasted time? How about drinking, gambling and shopping then.
2 - loss of self-esteem. Anything to back that up? I've been in two relationships, and around those and within those relationships pornography has not negatively affected my self-esteem.
3 - I've heard of mention of this before, but can still just as easily as before in life function in this manner.
4 - Child pornography and human trafficking, you may be confusing this with prostitution I fear as mainstream pornography comes from a heavily regulated and legally aware business. Sure you can find unscrupulous stuff, but most people are looking for a quick Google and a quick shufty!
5 - people in the porn industry make a concious decision to do that job, and it can be very well paid.
6 - STIs and lack of sexual health are far more associated with the general population. These people are very careful in preparation, as opposed to a careless drunken one-night stands.
7 - many performers are known for their specialist area, something they do unique to them, or in their own way. I don't think anybody forces them to do it, otherwise everyone would do things like scat, violence and bondage, which is not the case. There are many female performers who will only perform with other women and not even have any sexual intercourse filmed.
8 - tenuous, I know families fall out over jobs in the church. Shall we shut down and regulate them?
9 - The way the sexes are viewed is affected far more by the gaggles of orange slappers coated in Max Factor, drinking to excess and acting with debauchery across the country most nights of the week. I don't think anybody looks down on women because of something they've seen a woman do in a porn film.

I very much doubt Duke Nukem will be censored in the UK. The BBFC are very, very liberal these days

I am a Christian, and i am glad that this thread (with a couple of minor blips) is keeping away from the "Knock the believers" fashion. Actually, Christianity does not have very much to say about pornography by itself, but emphasises the approach that we should treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves. If people make the material willingly, and are willing to share it (in full knowledge) there is really no problem from a Christian point of view. However, coercion of any kind, or sharing "private" videos is wrong however you look at it.
As a former Marriage Counsellor, I can confirm that pornography can cause severe troubles for both individuals and relationships, but that it can also help people, and be as trivial as having a cup of tea. And the same is true of alcohol, and, say, football! Where there is the potential for trouble, it can stir it up. What I believe society needs is not censorship, but a greater awareness of how to spot when people are having troubles, and a greater willingness to offer help and support.

Thinking - how much of the internet as we know it is because of porn

The Porn industry were the first to adopt JPEG as a Photo format. Before that was the rather limited GIF

Same with MPEG and Streaming Video. Will be interesting to see if OGG/Google can get their HTML5 video adopted by the Porn Industry. If they do that might mean the death of flash

I fully support what was said here. Like anything else, with use comes responsibility and with responsibility comes vigilance and self-awareness, if you know what I mean! :)

To be fair I think religion is more dangerous than porn. I'm a staunch atheist, but have morals as anyone else, yet I find atheism to talk more morals etc than the biggest selling fiction book of all time - AKA the Bible.

I agree with everything you have said there. Its also refreshing to see a Supporter of an 'Old Firm' team to have this opinion towards religion! :D
