Excellent!

I was most surprised when over in Amsterdam with family a few weeks ago to find the intercity trains boasting free WiFi throughout. Turned out to be quite useful as there was disruption and boards etc were not helpful, so it enabled me to jump on the WiFi and check where we were/if we were going the right way.

Once done, I ran a speed test on it and got download speeds of just over 3Mb/s...on a train!

On BT Infinity up here in Buxton - pretty good, and much better than my connection in Kent (with TalkTalk, about 7.5 download, 0.5 upload.)

Hmm, some fantastic speeds on here.

I live out in the sticks, at 3am can get speeds of 6/7 Mbs but this gets swamped out tea-time onwards (with TalkTalk).

To continue the story, still with with TalkTalk, I got a letter from them the other day saying they were due to install their "Next Generation Network" equipment in the local exchange (although this was originally promised three years ago) and to expect possible broadband speed increases "of up to 50%".

Now, being a deeply cynical sort, I poo-pooed this as marketing hype but, at same time, welcomed any opportunity for improvement.

Well, just to say, for an ADSL connection the improvements have been quite dramatic (day/night):
