Internet bandwidth

Having seen a thread like this on another forum, I thought it would be interesting to see what people's internet speed is on here.

I just did a test on Speedtest.net and got the following result:



Mine doesn't seem very good since I live in a town (apparently 87% of the UK population have a faster connection); I would hope it would be 5Mbps at least.

How does everyone else's compare?

That is roughly comparable to mine.

Seems to work quite well for listening to f1 over the sonos box at the moment.

I'm paying for "unlimited usage"; so speed is not a major factor for me.

The only way I could go faster would be to pay more for fibre.

You may care about latency, but radio quality sound uses negligible bandwidth.

17.81 and 1.06 about a quarter of a mile from the exchange. A bit slow today.

Check if any ISP on your exchange has upgraded to ADSL2+ but check if their charges include line rental or not as most providers tend try and confuse to portray a competitive product.

TRy uswitch.com Street Stats to see which providers near you are giving a higher speed.

So glad I use cable broadband, always get a consistent 50Mb (what we pay for)

Saying that, we do live in a town, so it will not be the same as some for the country folk.

I remember it used to be around 0.32 MB a year or so ago, where it was advertised as "super-fast broadband". No usage cap and no noticeable peak-time slowdowns, so can't complain there.

As for the ones that are lucy enough to have 50Mbps plus, it just isn't fair! Everyone else in my town seems to be able to get BT Infinity. There are cabinets with stickers on advertising it just a few minutes down the road. I even have relatives a few minutes walk away that can get it, but I can't!

The problem is that while they have enabled my exchange, if the cabinet isn't enabled, I can't get it. Typical that our's hasn't been upgraded then, as I asked my Dad to register his interest on both "The Race to Infinity" website (anyone remember that?) and BT's website itself. That was a couple of years ago, and still we can't get it.

There is of course still the problem of general slowness of certain areas of the internet, particularly the response of some websites, so for the general surfer local speed is not really an issue.

Home broadband is ~5Mbps but mobile internet on my phone tops out at about 14Mbps on HSPA+ which keeps me happy.

Mine has got a lot better recently, it was diabolical - if it were me paying the bills we wouldn't be using AOL (aka TalkTalk) and would have moved onto cable, but it's not my decision so we're stuck with it for the time being.

Had to stop using TalkTalk's DNS as it was failing look ups about 50% of the time at its worst, haven't had so many problems since I changed our router to use a public DNS service.

I am without an internet connection to my home and have had to rely on a mobile dongle for my access. I'm reasonably happy with the connection speed, but once I reach my 2GB download limit I get my speed throttled between 4pm and midnight.

I'd be interested to compare other users of mobile dongles. Are you out there?

Down speed is a little below my maximum of 8mb/s, but no complaints.
Up speed is pitiful and has always been pitiful.
Ping is disappointing.

And yes, that speed test is hosted by my broadband provider so will probably be about as high as I will get from my connection! Used to be 50Mbps for a year or so as a 'trial' but I don't notice much of the difference!

I have cabled my entire house in CAT6, so much better. Even more so for streaming HD content off my home server

Perfectly happy with this, connection is cable and wired through mains and 20Mb/s is what we are meant to be getting.
