Wrong country altogether.

Also, I should have said that there is commercial goods traffic on the standard gauge, as well as heritage trains on both.

If I have defeated too many people, I'll post a second photo but that will make it obvious.

Correct. About 10 years ago. Relieved that I haven't derailed the game.

On our way out (to Mecklenburg for our summer holiday) we had a round trip from Asendorf (the terminus of the surviving N/G section) including a wonderful Wismar railbus (I've got a photo somewhere but the location is too generic for this thread!). This was the return, and my wife helped me pursue the Kaffkieker (coffee--cooker?) from Eystrup towards Syke; the photo was on the street-running bit at Uenzen.

All because I read most of the Railway Holiday series at an impressionable age :)

Kieken is "to look at", a bit like gucken.
Don't know about the "Kaff" element.

In other words it was called that because it let you look at the beautiful landscape from a different viewpoint.
Edit: Collins at
has Kaff = "dump" or "hole" (the latter presumably in the sense of a horrible place), so it's a sarcastic name!
Langenscheidt also has "godforsaken place" for Kaff.

Who says Germans have no sense of humour?

I'd always read it as Kaffee for some reason, but you are quite right!

I reckon my German is pretty fluent but I'd got this one totally wrong.
Silly - I've come across Kaff as slang for an insignificant place (Milchkanne - churn - ditto) and gucken is Hochdeutsch for "to look" whereas this is Plattdeutsch country!

Have been there nearly 60 years ago, when I was “serving” in the region. So I only vaguely remembered.
The “VGH” put me on the right track.
Needed a friend who lives in Diepholz to point me in the right direction - well, more or less. He had never been there himself.
As for the “Kaff” element, I remember it being used for something like your “hamlet”, a general term. Not a specific term like “Ballyawful”, “Boerenkoolstronkeradeel” or “Stiekelkamperfehn” (which actually exist, - ‘thistle plot muir’ )

Anyway, nowhere near my photos, so open field…

It is, yes - and I did this mission as a day trip using the Jetfoils; carefully timed so that I'd get one of them on the way out from Dover and the other on the way back. :)
