Tell you what, that is some good filming. the dialogue adds to the charm.
I love the bits with a cast of Ladies of a Certain Age rocking back and forth, clutching their handbags, as the scenery whizzes past in a convincing fashion.
Brit at 3;25... B1 at 3;40 ... close headways there.

I'd disagree with that. Sixty years before Gagarin went into space (1951), there wasn't any such thing as an aeroplane (1903), and it was only twenty years before that the first petrol engine was produced (1884).

Yup, never seen those East Anglian mountains before! But that apart I thought it was great. You could see the scenery, too, as the lineside was kept free of trees! And not an orange jacket in sight!

Nothing wrong with the sound track; it was most informative.

Well yes, I´m not denying that great change didn´t occur in previous years. But the last forty years has seen mankind develop day trips to australia, a spaceship which can reach mars, the internet. And it is really the huge development in computing which is the main ingredient....think what it has done! It´s incredible.

What, precisely? The ability for me to inflict my worthless opinions on an uninterested public (when I could have used the Times letters page to do so before).

I will say we did have plenty of wonderful development, spacecraft that can take people to the Moon, aircraft that can carry passengers at supersonic speeds, trains that can cover the entire length of the UK in four hours, but we've given up a lot of it. Half the work of this century will be sorting out the mess that the previous two left the planet in.

Ah, the front window view! I really miss the "driver's view" that could be had from the front seats in the leading carriage of these ancient DMUs and the old Class 303 Blue Trains when they first appeared on the Clyde North Bank lines.

Photo opportunities from mainline trains in the UK have really taken a dive in recent years - the best view we can get now is from the opening window of the HST doors or the Caley sleeper.

(Don't try this at home folks - decapitation really hurts!)

I take it the Tyne and Wear metro is now the only opportunity to see a main line from the forward view postition in the UK (Gateshead to Sunderland) Is that right ? Is there anywhere else apart from heritage railways and the odd DMU railtour

They were in Cumberland on the CKP line through Keswick (Cat Bells, Blencathra, Skiddaw etc). Long day trip from Norwich...
Don't know where the last station was though with that lower quadrant gantry. Workington maybe?

I think that may also have something to do with the zoom on the camera. If not, that's a pretty steep gradient for a train.
