If I have a friend who lives in a particular European country and would like to travel around that country with that person, can I buy them a companion ticket?

Maybe, your question is too unclear for an answer-or the answer would be far too long as EUR has many, many countries.
There is a specific subsection of this forum for international travel-thats likely a much better place to put this. Then please be much more specific: in just 1 country? Which one? What travel would be aimed for? Are you the one holding the IR-ticket (issued in UK)? Age of the friend.
IF its limited to just 1 country-nearly all EUR countries have some form of local ride-at-will tickets or special bargains. TOday you can still order IR with 15% discount (nonrefundable and specific travel dates have to be provided), but I guess its just too late to take advantage of that.

Oh-if you simply wanted to ask if YOU can buy an IR- ticket for someone else: yes, but the exact details have to be provided (full name, nr of ID/passpt) and of course the restrictions of home-country (only 1 trip out and in-border or airport) apply. On the other hand-that friend could travel at will the whole time on the most expensive ATOC-peak hour trains if his/her home is non-UK. And even get most of the 1st cl. freebies and lounges one can get in the UK if its bought for that class.

I think the OP was wondering whether Interrail offered a specific ticket, valid for a resident in the company of a non resident.

There is a Britrail Guest Pass which does this for the UK, but not a Eurail or Interrail equivalent.

I suspect the only way is for the local person to use a pass available to nationals.

Yes. I can't find any mention of the Britrail Guest Pass on a retail website. Is it still available?
