From January 2016, Inter Rail tickets now also include one journey to and one journey from your origin point in your country of residence, to the border. More information can be found here http://www.interrail.eu/passes/how-use-your-pass/travel-your-own-country

Assuming this applies to the UK as well, does this mean I can use my dated ticket to start from home & travel to London, as effectively the border point for those using Eurostar will be customs at St Pancras station?

Additionally, would there be any time restrictions on the UK journeys? There's no mention of this on the Inter Rail website?

Yes the "free journey" is valid to the UK "port", so St Pancras is ok. There are no time restrictions.

Free journies applies only to Global InterRails, NOT One-Country passes.

However the question now is whether the Interail pass is good value compared to purchasing point to point tickets. Over on www.pprune.org there's an interesting thread on this topic

If one is just doing point to point journeys, a global Inter Rail probably isn't worth it, especially given that cheap advance fares are now available on many journeys within Europe.

Where they do come into their own, is when you want to do lots of little journeys, or have flexibility to change your plans during the day. Just saves a lot of messing around. Also, the price of the 7 day global Inter-Rail pass (for 29 countries other that your place of residence) compaires very favourably to say the ALR at £478 for 7 days (and with some restrictions these days too).

It's always sold well because of the convenience. One simple purchase and you're done for the actual pass. And even the main InterRail Pass site has a facility to book seat reservations (where needed) albeit with a limit of 8 plus hefty booking fees.

Try finding one booking site to access the plethora of booking European rail journeys at the best price. At least Seat61 points you in the right direction I suppose.

I also noticed this when ordering a couple of passes the other day. Which is annoying as the express delivery has to be signed for, and there's often no-one at home here to do that! The budget delivery was just posted through the letterbox.

Is it worth the effort buying Inter Rail (global or one country) tickets in the UK now? I wonder whether it is easier to get them in Calais or at an airport with a rail station, such as Amsterdam Schiphol or Frankfurt? You would then pay in euros, which may be cheaper than in pounds, and presumably no fees.

That's interesting. I assume its's fair to, well, assume the 'border' includes ferry ports. If so, this makes The 10 Capitals bash feasible again.

I will of course look into it properly after New York, but yes The 10 Capitals trip is still on the cards. We're hoping to do it sometime around March 2017, with proper planning and booking phases beginning around end of March 2016. This free journey to/from the border will potentially save us £75 each, which makes the trip far easier to save for!

I can't fault the express delivery mind. I ordered on Wednesday evening and my ticket was with me this morning. With the free delivery I've had a couple of anxious waits.
