hello

i have been one of those fools who thought the could get away with buying a ticket to a closer station than the one i was going to - so i could save a few pounds. I got caught, made up a story about me missing my stop and was going home from my partners house. i couldn't give my address as i was lying. they asked for the address i was coming from and gave my partners where the letter has just arrived. i have looked through some forum chats and drafted a letter coming clean, telling the truth, and asking if we can keep it out of court.

would really appreciate feedback on my letter below - thanks

Dear sir/madam

I am writing in response to your notice of intention to prosecute letter I received from you dated 20th March 2024.

Thank you for offering me the opportunity to respond.

On 12th February 2024, my details were taken by a Revenue Protection Inspector after I was unable to produce a valid ticket for the journey I was on.

I made a careless decision in buying a cheaper ticket – for which there is no excuse. I also panicked and fabricated a story about why I did not have a valid ticket. I take full accountability for this. This letter was sent to my partners house who is very unhappy that I gave her address. Please see my own address at the top of this letter.

I am deeply ashamed by all of this, and I am very sorry for my actions.

I realise and understand the gravity of my decision. Fare evasion is unacceptable, and unfair. Not only to you the rail company, but to your staff and other passengers who abide by the ticket rules.

I am graciously asking you, nee pleading, if you would consider settling my wrongdoing without court action. I will reimburse you any administrative costs that I have caused, along with the correct fare.

@PC6719. Welcome to the forum. Be helpful if you could provide some further info, as per this pre-existing thread.

If possible, could you upload a copy if the letter received from the train company, with your name and address and case reference number (if any) suitably obscured?

Also, was the time you got stopped the one and only time you've been short-faring?

Do I detect ChatGPT at work? :) It's better without!

Apart from that, you could add a promise to pay the correct fare in future.

as you perhaps know, GTR are known for settling with people who engage with them, especially for a first offence.

This is a bit over the top. Just go for something like "I would be very grateful if..."
